I never would have planned to have a themes sib set, but my absolute top two names are Basil and Oleander, and I’ve also considered Clementine and Yarrow, so I’ve got a very botanical taste in names.
What would you / what do you think when you meet siblings with really themed names? Does it matter that much?
Bonus if you have any name reccomendations based on this theme
I wouldn’t blink twice at a themed sibset where the names were genuine names e.g. [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
I might think it were a bit cheesy if they were less commonly used names e.g.
[name_f]Blossom[/name_f], [name_f]Posey[/name_f], [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f]
or
[name_u]Rocket[/name_u], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_u]Jupiter[/name_u]
I don’t know, I don’t hate it but it’s not my style personally.
I don’t hate it, but I think it can be a bit cheesy. I think it depends on the names themselves and whether they are inextricably linked to the theme, or if the theme would kind of go unnoticed unless it was 5+ children, for example.
I can definitely see that. I probably might not notice a theme right away if they are common names, so I see why more out there names might be a little more cheesy, and I know my names are verging more on out there
I think that’s a good way to measure it. With botanical names, I feel like it depends how obviously the name is a plant, and mine are a bit of a range. I’ll keep that metric in mind
Ooh, I like your taste in names! For the record, I wouldn’t find a sibset of those names cheesy. Some of them are more obscure than others so it isn’t immediately noticeable, unlike something like [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. Similar vibe to your theme: [name_f]Clover[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], Flora/Florence, [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_u]Cypress[/name_u], Cedar…
Themed sets in general can be a bit odd but I don’t typically mind. It does sort of irk me when they break the theme though lol. I know a family where both parents and 4 kids have J names, then they named their final kid [name_u]Ryan[/name_u]!
I usually don’t like themed sibsets, but if it’s not too obvious I don’t mind. With the twins we have a little bit of an astronomy theme going on (Leonid and Endymion) but that’s not obvious to most people. If we ever have another boy and we name him [name_m]Astrophel[/name_m], I suppose that would fit into the theme… But our [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m] might feel left out
[name_f]My[/name_f] oldest son’s name is Hjörtur, and I wouldn’t have minded sticking with a “Icelandic nature/animal names theme” there (Hjörtur means deer).
I actually have a soft spot for themed sib sets. I like themes based on meanings, like your botanical one. If I would meet siblings called [name_u]Basil[/name_u], [name_u]Oleander[/name_u], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and [name_u]Yarrow[/name_u], I would think that’s cute.
However, with some themes, the names can get too similar for my taste. For example, I knew sisters with double barreled names that had one name in common.
I totally agree with this 100%! So I’m nervous about accidentally starting a theme and then not finding another name that goes well
@Rosebeth Thanks for the suggestion of Bramwell, I didn’t know the botanical connections! Valerian is also wonderful, and we have a cat named Hyacinth and I also love that name. Your kids names are fantastic btw!
That does sound a little too simialar, I agree that siblings need to have pretty distinct names to feel like individuals
I really like the idea of themed sets and think they’re definitely usable in real life! My friend and her brother are Faith & Chance, and my great-grandmother and her sister were Opal & Beryl (both gemstones), which I always thought were pretty neat!
I like names that have the same meaning and or give the same imagery! I love the sibsets [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] & [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] & [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]. Both give wild, vivid, rose red vibes and I adore it! I wouldn’t put [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] & [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] together though, because those are too red related.
I like a themed sibling set if the names are genuine with a long history of usage like [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] & [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] I think that would be pretty. But if the sibling set was [name_u]London[/name_u], [name_u]Paris[/name_u] and [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] I wouldn’t like it I would find that cringeworthy.
[name_f]Angelina[/name_f]
[name_m]Brandon[/name_m]
C name that it so unique I’m not going to say it
[name_m]Deryk[/name_m]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
Gracebelle
I don’t mind themed sibset, as long as it’s not obvious:
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_m]Dawson[/name_m]
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u]
[name_u]Clare[/name_u]
(All of them are from 90s shows
Here are some obvious ones:
[name_u]Slate[/name_u]
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_m]Clay[/name_m]
