I’ve loved the name [name]Richard[/name] for as long as I can remember and would use the nicknames [name]Richie[/name] or [name]Rich[/name]- not ever [name]Dick[/name] or [name]Dicky[/name]. Although every time I mention the name to somebody I get nothing but negative reactions which are starting to make me think twice about ever using it in the future. What do you berries generally think of the name? Is it too old fashioned and dated? And do you think people would still insist on the nicknames [name]Dick[/name] and [name]Dicky[/name]? Because that’s really my only issue with the name. X
I like it. [name]Just[/name] make the nicknames VERY CLEAR.
Honestly, I’m not sure WHY ‘[name]Dick[/name]’ is even a nickname for [name]Richard[/name]. It’s NOWHERE in the name, like how ‘[name]Jack[/name]’ is a nickname for ‘[name]John[/name].’
I don’t think people use the nicknames [name]Dick[/name] or [name]Dicky[/name] anymore for obvious reasons. [name]Richie[/name] is such a cute nickname on a little boy. I’d like to see it on someone else’s child.
Sidenote: [name]Richard[/name] became [name]Rick[/name], which somewhere along the line became [name]Dick[/name].
[name]One[/name] word: [name]Dick[/name].
And yeah, I don’t really get why [name]Dick[/name] is a nickname for [name]Richard[/name], but he’s going to be called [name]Dick[/name] or [name]Dicky[/name] by at least someone in his life. I’ve just never been a fan of [name]Richard[/name], or even [name]Rich[/name] or [name]Richie[/name]. Maybe [name]Richmond[/name] but… I just feel like [name]Richie[/name] is kind of a stuck up name, like [name]Remington[/name].
I doubt now days anyone would think to call a young boy named [name]Richard[/name] [name]Dick[/name]. Sounds slightly dated to me, but is a solid classic name.
It’s not something I’d ever use but I like it with the nickname [name]Ricky[/name]. I majorly dislike both [name]Richie[/name] and [name]Rich[/name].
I love it. I’m considering using it in the middle position though. I don’t think you should worry about potentially being called [name]Dick[/name] or [name]Dicky[/name]- I don’t think anyone would do that anymore, at least not here. I know several [name]Richards[/name] -[name]Ricks[/name], Rikkis, Riches- and they’ve never had their name shortened to that. And people still use [name]William[/name] despite [name]Willy[/name]! I think you should go for it. It’d be a shame if such a handsome, classic name was passed over because of a few stupid nicknames
I think the name [name]Richard[/name] is handsome, even if it is slightly dated. I don’t think anyone would call him [name]Dick[/name] or [name]Dicky[/name], except maybe at school as a taunt, but how many kids even know [name]Dick[/name] is short for [name]Richard[/name] really anyway? I know three [name]Richards[/name], two go by [name]Rich[/name] and one by [name]Richy[/name], though I also like the nn [name]Rick[/name] or [name]Ricky[/name] as well.
[name]One[/name] of my cousins has a son named [name]Richard[/name]. He has always gone by [name]Richard[/name] or [name]Rich[/name]. None of the kids his age think twice about it because they are unaware that [name]Dick[/name] was ever a nn for [name]Richard[/name]. It is a nice, solid name and if you like it, you shouldn’t hesitate to use it.
I think it’s cool, but make the nicknames clear that you’d prefer to have him get called something other than [name]Dick[/name] or [name]Dicky[/name].
My dad is a [name]Richard[/name] (no nickname), my cousin is a [name]Richard[/name] (sometimes [name]Rick[/name]) and my brother has a friend [name]Richard[/name] (mostly [name]Richie[/name]). None of them have ever been called [name]Dick[/name].
I like [name]Richard[/name] - he seems like a guy with a lot of gravitas. I also like [name]Rick[/name], who seems like a fun kind of guy that I picture BBQing in his back yard while his kids play catch. [name]Ricky[/name] is cute for a child, whom I picture to be impish and adorable. I suppose someone might dredge up the nickname [name]Dick[/name] at some point in his life, but it doesn’t seem a natural nickname anymore. The name gives such flexibility, that I think it’s a fantastic choice.
I don’t think [name]Dick[/name] is really that common as a nn for [name]Richard[/name] anymore.
My BFF is a [name]Richard[/name] and he’s always been [name]Rich[/name], [name]Richie[/name] or [name]Richard[/name]. (Never ever [name]Dick[/name])
My brother, an Uncle and my [name]Son[/name] in law are all [name]Richards[/name]. My brother and son-in-law are both call [name]Ricky[/name] and my Uncle always called his full name.
When my daughter was still unknown if she had been a boy she was to be [name]Richard[/name].
[name]Richard[/name] is a classic name. It’s never been a favourite of mine in the past and that was probably due to former US President [name]Richard[/name] [name]Nixon[/name]. The name really nosedived after the Watergate scandal. The problematic nn choices didn’t help either. Lately, I’ve gained a new respect for the name. This new appreciation comes in the form of “The Hobbit” film star, British actor [name]Richard[/name] Armitage, who plays [name]Thorin[/name]. It’s amazing how one person in the spotlight can change one’s attitude regarding a name. Personally, I would choose the cool nn of [name]Rico[/name].
[name]Dick[/name] just ruins this one for me. Sure you won’t use the nickname [name]Dick[/name], but it probably is going to come up at some point. If the nickname were not an issue I would think the name was ok.
