Thoughts on Rupert?

I’m wondering how this one would go over here in the U.S. Our last name is obviously and harshly [name]German[/name], and it’s difficult to find boy names that work well. [name]Rupert[/name] is one that I’ve loved for a long time, and I think it sounds pretty fabulous with our surname. For me, it has a classic sound (a la [name]Robert[/name]) while sounding upbeat and very slightly quirky. I love nn’s Roo and Rupe, but would probably call him [name]Rupert[/name] most of the time. [name]Do[/name] you think most people will recognize it? It’s important to me that names are easy to spell/pronounce, and recognizable to the general public while not necessarily being common (I don’t want a kid dealing with confusion over whether his name is a real name or not). Not expecting now, but hopefully in the relatively near future

I happen to like [name]Rupert[/name]. I think it’s becoming more accessible to the average non-[name]Berry[/name] person due to the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] actor, [name]Rupert[/name] Grint. So I don’t think there should be too many spelling/pronunciation issues (I would say never, but some people can mess up the name [name]Mary[/name], so…)

The name always makes me feel happy when I say it. Definitely usable.

Well, I love [name]Rupert[/name]. If my boyfriend had been a banker or something, I guess I’d call my child this name. So quirky, sexy, fun, intelligent. I have no idea how it would go down in [name]America[/name], but here in good old [name]England[/name] it’s not a problem. It was given to 156 babies in 2011 (# 287).

I love [name]Rupert[/name], it always makes me think of [name]Rupert[/name] [name]Bear[/name] and how much I loved those stories as a child

I love [name]Rupert[/name]!! I know a person called [name]Rupert[/name] and it really is an awesome name. My dog is called [name]Rupert[/name], but I definitely see it as a human name (we didn’t name our dog, his previous owners did) and the [name]Rupert[/name] [name]Bear[/name] connotations are lovely.
Great name for a little boy!

I’m happy to hear all the positivity!

I love it, if we have a son, he will be called [name]Rupert[/name] to honour my Dad, [name]Robert[/name]. We also have a very, obviously, long [name]German[/name] last name and since it has a Germanic origin, I think it’s a great compromise of cultures.

I think of [name]Rupert[/name] Grint. So what comes to mind is a sweet, cute, red-headed wizard to have a crush on one day. Definitely a good thing

kkrvf - What a lovely way to honor your dad! I think you’re right - it’s a nice compromise of cultures. It sounds like it fits with [name]German[/name] names, but still gives off a quirky English vibe

flamingo - I LOL’d for real. I’d be lying if I pretended that Mr. Grint doesn’t factor into the charm for me, but I have to convince DH to separate the two in his mind or I’ll never win him over! There’s also the good chance for red/auburn hair…

I’m not really loving it but I think it’s ok. I’m not sure it would go that well in [name]America[/name].

I wish I could love [name]Rupert[/name]. It’s a cool name, and the nn Ru/[name]Rue[/name] is pretty cool. I wish I loved it, because it would be a nice way to honor one of my grandparents, too. Lately I’ve been warming up to it, because I have been slightly obsessed with the 2007 version of Persuasion, and [name]Rupert[/name] Penry-[name]Jones[/name] plays [name]Captain[/name] Wentworth, and I’ve always loved [name]Captain[/name] Wentworth. Soo. haha. But I don’t especially love the name, I just like that it makes me all nostalgic about [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name], who I adore. I do love it as a MN, though. [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Edison[/name] [name]Rupert[/name] was once on my list. As a FN, I think a lot of Americans would think it’s stuffy/pretentious, but it is a nice name, and a nice alternative to [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Robert[/name], if those are too popular for some.

Gorgeous name. [name]Love[/name] it!
