I never thought of this as a name for a boy (or just in general) until I heard it on someone recently.
What are your thoughts on it?
Thanks!

When I hear [name_u]Salem[/name_u], I think of the [name_u]Salem[/name_u] witch trials and a black cat (from Sabrina the Teenage Witch and The Chilling Adventures of [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]). I can’t really see it on a person
I love it, just not it’s connections.
I don’t really love it for a human, it reminds me too much of the black cat from Chilling Adventures of [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] (sabrina the teenage witch). I would name a cat this though!
I love it. The connections aren’t horrible. A sassy [name_f]Cat[/name_f] and an important part of history. Its not Hitler.
Solomon and [name_u]Salem[/name_u] are both Hebrew origin that mean peace if you want something different.
I have a friend whose daughter name is [name_u]Salem[/name_u]. They call her either [name_u]Sal[/name_u] or [name_m]Lemmy[/name_m] I could see it used on a boy.
It feels a little too macabre to me because of the witch trials.
I just think of the cat
I love [name_u]Salem[/name_u], especially as a middle! I think it’s handsome, and I love the sound. I also happen to like both associations the name has. A funny cat, and an important part of history. It also reminds me of Halloween which I like!
I don’t know that I can picture it on a real child, but I like the sounds.
Also it comes from the Hebrew word shalom which means peace (a lovely association!). And yes, ironically [name_u]Salem[/name_u] Massachusetts is the “City of [name_u]Peace[/name_u]”.
The cat from [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] doesn’t bother me but I do worry about the witch trials :/. It’s a shame because it’s such a cool name.
Sorry, [name_u]Salem[/name_u] doesn’t seem useable to me.
I think it’s a lovely name for a parent who is into magic and Halloween. Someone who doesn’t consider themselves mainstream - I’m speaking from experience here I’m not opposed to the name [name_u]Salem[/name_u], but my top baby names are [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] (a demon… but there’s more to the story) and [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] (Egyptian god of the dead). So I love meanings and connections that could only attract people like myself
If my kid had a classmate named [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], I would want to be friend’s with that mom!
Would be a great name for a book character. [name_m]Can[/name_m]’t see it on a baby myself for reasons other posters have already mentioned.
I really like it, and I think I that on the right child,
In the right time and place that this can work.
However my husband explained to me that it’s probably not most places…
The town and cat character are quite strong associations when most people hear the word and I agree that it might not be a fair burden to place on a child.
But I agree that it’s lovely and it has a number of [name_u]Nick[/name_u] name options that would otherwise make it almost an easy choice.
Love it for a cat, not sure how I feel about it for a person.
I like the name, more as a middle name for either, and I prefer it slightly more on a girl. However, I do think the links to the witch trial are a little too much especially when there are loads of great names without such a dark connection!
The witch trials aren’t too overwhelming an association for me, and I don’t really have the cat association at all, but other people might think of that instantly. Personally I think it’s super cool!
Sorry, one more note from me about this Here in [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], we have a little town called [name_u]Salem[/name_u], so people in this area are likely to think of the town before any other association
