Thoughts on Second Girl Name

Hi! My husband and I just found out yesterday that the little one we are expecting is going to be a girl. We’re starting the process of trying to find a name for her (we thought she was going to be a boy and already had a boy name secured from the first pregnancy) and I would really like whatever name it is to be to fit in with her sister’s and potential future brother’s names as we are looking at having potentially 4 children. We have some middle names that we aren’t committed to, but are seriously considering, already set, and I have a list of potential first names from our first go through the baby name book.

Sister and (Potential Future) Brother Names
Alice Leonora
Wesley Arthur
Paul Gilbert (backup name for Wesley)

Middle Names (all honor names)
Marianne
Iris (we would consider this for a first name, but it is too close to Alice for me)
Anne
----Siri (only if it really fits. This honor name is the reason for Iris as a compromise due to the digital assistant)

Potential Names
Emilia
Eva
Felicia
Hannah
Lilia
Marie
Nessa (I love this but am struggling with it being a nickname as a full first name)
Nyla
Piper
Talia/Tahlia
Vanessa
Violet

I would love any thoughts on…

  • What combos from the above names you think would work well with the other sibling names
  • Nessa as a standalone name
  • Other names that you might suggest based off what I’ve already indicated we like. Please limit this to two or three names. Long lists intimidate me.

Edit: A note - our last name is two syllables and starts with a D for flow and initial reference <3
Edit2: I missed Talia/Tahlia when I transcribed. Whoops!

Combos…
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] (my favorite!!)
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Nessa[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] Marriane

I think [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] does work as a standalone! Though I do slightly prefer it as a nickname, myself. Any name containing ‘nes’/‘ness’ could work as a full. [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], Annes, [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] (this one is obvious, I suppose, though perhaps not as vintage and classic as your other names!), etc.

Names you may like:
[name_u]Hazel[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] / [name_f]Phebe[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]

I love [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] as a name or short for [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] A bit similar to [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] though? For matching [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_u]Wesley[/name_u], I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f]

Would you consider [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]? [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u], or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] would work!

I love lots of the names you have on this list!

Some you might like

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Siri[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]
[name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] (it’s a bit long visually but I think it sounds so lovely!)

As for [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], I think it can definitely work as a full name in the same way that [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Tess[/name_f] & [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] also work as full names! However, I think with your daughter and your other potentional names for the boys, which are all classics, I’d stick with full versions of names.

Some suggestions

[name_u]Blair[/name_u]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Leah[/name_f]

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] is gorgeous btw! I really love [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]. It sounds really darling with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and I think it works perfectly fine as a full name. [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] would work well. [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] “Nessa” works well too though. I also adore [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Eva[/name_f]. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] are great options.

Names you might like:

[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]

@snowmaiden Thank you! [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] as short for [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] is the only alternative I’m considering right now but I just…don’t love [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] as much? Maybe it will grow on me. Is it not a vintage/classic name? I, for some reason, thought it was. Maybe that’s why I don’t like it as much, ha. Thank you for the suggestions. [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is actually the name my brother gave my niece who was born last year, so that is out. Phoebe/Phebe has the unfortunate association with a childhood bully for me. I’ll consider [name_u]June[/name_u]

@Elizastory Hmmm, that occurred to me as well that potentially in between [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] that it would be a bit too much. [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], [name_u]Wesley[/name_u]. That’s a lot of sss in the same place. Things to keep in mind. Thanks!

@justlikeflorida Unfortunately, no. I’m really not a fan of the name [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]. Thank you for the suggestion, though!

@krijesnica Thank you! See, I don’t see [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] as full names, so I guess that is my problem. They are all nicknames and I’ve been generally staunchly against nicknames as full names unless it has historical backing as a standalone name. I found the reference to [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] the mother of an Irish king, and it having a geographical meaning in Scandinavian (which was actually attractive since my husband has Swedish ancestry) but that didn’t necessarily feel solid enough. Thank you for the additional suggestions!

@Kenny22 Thank you! I adore Alice’s name so much. Thank you for the suggestions. [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] does sound nice. I’ll keep that as a thought for how I can get to use [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] if I can warm up to [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] more.

[name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] work really well!! [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] would be lovely

[name_f]Nessa[/name_f] works as a stand alone to me. I like nicknamey names.

A few suggestions:

[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is gorgeous
I also love [name_u]Wesley[/name_u]- soooo, I’d eliminate [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] as someone else pointed out Ness and [name_m]Wes[/name_m] are just too much for siblings
Good luck!

After a bit of internet combing, I found a few more names that lead to the nickname [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] that might pair well with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] (gorgeous names, those two, by the way)! Apologies that the list is indeed a bit long, but hopefully one of these catches your eye. :relaxed:

[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnessa[/name_f]
Venesse
[name_f]Nerissa[/name_f]
Genesa
Ginessa (also has [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] as an adorable nickname!)
[name_f]Inessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Honesty[/name_f]
[name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] (loving this as an option!)
Amnesty
[name_f]Ernesta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f]
Onessa
Onesha
[name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] (reh-NEZ-may; If you don’t mind the mega [name_u]Twilight[/name_u] associations, I suppose!)

I think [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] or [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] would work well with the other sibling names. [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] as a standalone name seems completely fine to me. Maybe you would also like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] (& Paul!) are lovely.

Here are my thoughts on your list & which combos I like:

Middle Names (all honor names)
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] (we would consider this for a first name, but it is too close to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] for me)
[name_u]Anne[/name_u]
----Siri (only if it really fits. This honor name is the reason for [name_f]Iris[/name_f] as a compromise due to the digital assistant)

Emilia-I think that this is a great name. It’s smart & strong but sweet & bookish too. It goes great w/your crew. And it has the fun nn of [name_f]Millie[/name_f]. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Emmie[/name_f], personally. And ‘Em’ names are a tad over done in general. The only thing that would keep me from using [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is that it may often get mistaken for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. And that could get annoying. [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] flow nicely.

Eva-It’s nice & pleasant & works well w/your kids’ names. I think that [name_f]Evie[/name_f] is pixie-ish & spunky, but ‘Ev’ names are so over done. Maybe even more so than 'Em’s. That’s the only downfall here. [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is my favorite combo.

Felicia-Gosh, I don’t know. Is that stupid ‘Bye Felicia’ thing too prominent? It’s not my cup of tea anyway. Maybe it feels 80s or something. I love [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] more.

Hannah-This is really lovely w/Alice, [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] & [name_m]Paul[/name_m]. It’s kind & classic & simple. It’s really fairly popular, but a great name anyway. I like [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] best.

Lilia-I love love love [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]. It’s my favorite from your list in general. It’s a tad exotic(?) sounding w/your crew, but not a deal breaker. [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] would fit in better, but I really find [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] just gorgeous. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is my pick.

Marie-Ooh, this feels perfect for you. It’s well known & smart & kind & classic & easy & not popular & just lovable. [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] probably flows the best?

[name_f]Nessa[/name_f] (I love this but am struggling with it being a nickname as a full first name)-I think it’s fine. If you love [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] just as much as [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], then go for [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]. But if you really love [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], then just use [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]. The only thing is…is it too close to [name_u]Wesley[/name_u]?

Nyla-Meh, I don’t know. The ‘y’ looks a little odd, & this just feels trendy w/your kids’ classic names.

Piper-Same as above.

Vanessa-Not my cup of tea, really, but a totally fine interesting choice. It doesn’t flow perfectly w/any of your mns, but I guess [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is best.

Violet-Aw, I love [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. It has beautiful floral imagery. It’s vintage & feminine & a little spunky. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is my favorite.

I don’t care for the name [name_f]Siri[/name_f] at all, so I didn’t suggest that for any of the middles. It makes more sense to just use [name_f]Iris[/name_f], which is a vintage classic & a pretty flower. [name_f]Siri[/name_f] is so associated w/the digital assistant; just a little weird for me.

A few more ideas that you may like:

[name_f]Clara[/name_f]

[name_u]Fern[/name_u]

[name_f]Greta[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] or [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]

@Greyblue Thank you for the thoughts!

@CurlyC I think I’ve come to striking Nessa at this point due to that and Alice, Nessa, and Wesley just don’t look…right together? Thank you for the advice!

@snowmaiden Thank you! I appreciate the research you did. Unfortunately the only one that captures my interest is Anastasia and it gets struck out both by having the same first initial as Alice (which is something that would bother me) and being a bit too extravagant to me in comparison to Alice and Wesley.

@Johannaa Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. I do love the name Rose. Alice and then Rose seemed a bit too…run of the mill for me? But it might be something that I get over.

@MichelleM Wow, such a lovely break down! I really appreciate it  Emilia sounding like other names is what puts me a little off from it, but I do adore the name. I affectionately call one of my best friends (who’s name is Emily) Emilia so it is near and dear. Marie is a beautiful name. Husband is a bit leery of it as a stand alone name because of how common it is as a middle name and how it would be a reference to his sister (who has it as a middle name) and my mom (same deal) at the same time. However, it is rarely used as a first and he did say he didn’t ‘dislike’ any of the names on the list when I showed it to him, so maybe there is hope? I think I might even like Marie Iris more than Marie Anne, but both are lovely. Siri is my husband’s mother’s name - thus the inclusion. I can only stomach it as a middle and even then, it doesn’t tend to flow as a middle well, but if someone finds a lovely combo for it, I would not be upset to use it there. And thank you for the suggestions! I adore the name Clara but my brother named his golden retriever that and all four of my nieces and nephews by him would probably have a field day if I named our girl Clara.

@Lula-Rose Thank you! I agree, those are lovely combos.

Note: I added Talia/Tahlia to the list when I realized I had missed transcribing it (I was wondering why nobody had brought it up, yet, lol.

[name_f]Claire[/name_f] Anne-Marie

I feel like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Eva[/name_f] are the winners on your list. They really stand out to me as the ones that work best with the style you’re establishing with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] & Wesley/Paul. (It’s also nice to see love for Paul–it’s my husband’s name, and I think a lot of people overlook it as not fashionable or youthful enough. But what a strong name!)

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite middle for both of them is [name_f]Marianne[/name_f].

Other names that seem like your style could be [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Eva[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] work really well with your other choices! [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Siri[/name_f] would be lovely. I think [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] works fine as a standalone name, but is a little bit stylistically different/doesn’t sound great with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_u]Wesley[/name_u].

Of your options I love [name_u]Marie[/name_u] the most. It’s such an underused classic that is so often regulated to the middle spot. I think [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] would work well from your listed middles. I also am a fan of [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]

For [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], I know you’re considering striking it at the moment, but Nessarose is the full name of a character in Wicked and wasn’t sure if that version would interest you (it’s also my first association when I hear Nessa)

Other suggestions might be:
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariah[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]

With sister [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] (and potential brothers [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] and Paul), my favorites from your first name options would be [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Felicia[/name_f], [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], [name_f]Talia[/name_f] / [name_f]Tahlia[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. No votes would go to [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] (a bit plain next to [name_f]Alice[/name_f], which manages to be fey, soft, and precocious all at once), [name_u]Marie[/name_u] (always feels like a “filler” name to me), [name_f]Nyla[/name_f] (feels very modern next to the enduring classics that make up the rest of the sibset), [name_u]Piper[/name_u] (feels too unisex as a sister for [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and also has the modern / trendy vibe), and [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] (feels very dated to me, and you’re considering [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] which I find much fresher).

For combo suggestions, I avoided pairing names that end in vowels with middles that begin with vowels for better flow, which is why [name_f]Siri[/name_f] and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] show up more than [name_u]Anne[/name_u]. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is actually my favorite of your middle options, but I didn’t think the flow worked with names ending in -a, and I thought [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] might be too much, as they’re both purple flowers.

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Siri[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicia[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Siri[/name_f]
[name_f]Nessa[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Talia[/name_f] [name_f]Siri[/name_f] / [name_f]Tahlia[/name_f] [name_f]Siri[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]

I think [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] works beautifully as a standalone name, and is one of my favorite options from your list as a sister for [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. They both have a storybook vibe, and they’re both very sweet, demure-sounding names, but they each have a character namesake that gives them more of an edge under the softness. (For reference, I feel the same way about [name_f]Talia[/name_f] and Violet.)

Bonus suggestions for first names:
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - I think she fits the vibe and aesthetic of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] perfectly. If you don’t care for [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a standalone name, [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Luciana[/name_f], [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucette[/name_f] are all potential long-form options. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] would be lovely sisters.
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] - Like [name_f]Alice[/name_f], she’s whimsical, romantic, and classic without feeling plain. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] are beautiful together.
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - A soft, gentle, underrated classic. I think a sibset of [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_u]Wesley[/name_u], and [name_m]Paul[/name_m] is just beautiful. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f], or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] would all pair well with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f].
I also absolutely ADORE the idea of [name_f]Clara[/name_f] with your sibset. It’s too bad about the dog!

Bonus suggestions for middles:
[name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] - Since you have both [name_u]Anne[/name_u] and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] on your list, I thought you might like [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]. I feel like she’s a little more unexpected and less dated than [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], while still containing those honor names. I think a sibset of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] would be beautiful!
For these next three, I wanted to find some alternative ways to honor the [name_f]Siri[/name_f] in your life without having to use the name itself since it’s so linked to the [name_f]Apple[/name_f] products. The name [name_f]Siri[/name_f] is a diminutive of [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f], which means “fair victory.” [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] didn’t really seem to be your style, so I searched for names meaning “fair” and/or “victory” to see if there were any options you might like and found three potentials:
[name_f]Colette[/name_f] - A [name_u]French[/name_u] name meaning “people of victory” and a variation of both [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]. I think [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Colette[/name_f], and [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Colette[/name_f] are all beautiful options for [name_f]Alice[/name_f] Leonora’s sister.
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f] - A Welsh name meaning “white; fair; blessed.” If you don’t care for [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] as a standalone name, there are quite a few long-form options - [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneira[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], even [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]. [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], or [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] are all lovely paired with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f], though admittedly some variants are a little more uncommon and less classic.
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] - A beautiful classic name meaning “victory.” [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] have the best flow, but [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] Victora and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] would also be good options. [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] could also work in the first name slot, allowing you to use a second honor name as a middle. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] would be lovely together.

I hope this is helpful and not too overwhelming, even though I didn’t stay perfectly within the suggestion limits!

I absolutely love [name_u]Marie[/name_u] for this baby girl! I think it’s a brilliant and perfect choice! Like [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_u]Marie[/name_u] is sweet & charming, feminine & classic, and incredibly endearing. Common middle names used as a first name are always so refreshing. For example, [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_u]Anne[/name_u] in the fn spot are unexpected and stylish!

Since [name_u]Marie[/name_u] honors two family members, I would use it with a mn that you love but doesn’t necessarily honor someone. [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are beautiful! I also love [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] for you!
