Thoughts on Stellan vs Cyrus

My husband and I are on the hunt for a name for baby boy #2. I am worried both names we like have potential negative connotations!

Recently we really like the name [name_m]Stellan[/name_m]. However, I am worried if people hear Stalin, when they hear this. Absolutely do NOT want this! I think [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] is super cool, but want to know if others immediately hear Stalin when they hear the name, or if I’m over thinking it.

We also really like [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]. I’m worried about the [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] reference. It is a boy and he will be removed from her big fame years, but…

Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated!

I think [name_m] Stellan [/name_m] is a stellar name and I much prefer it over [name_m] Cyrus [/name_m]. I had honestly never made an association between it and Stalin until reading your post.

I like [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]. Never been a fan of [name_m]Stellan[/name_m]. It’s too preppy for my taste, and I’ve always thought it sounded bratty.

I like both names, but slightly prefer [name_m]Stellan[/name_m].

[name_m]Stellan[/name_m] makes me think of [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] Skarsgård. I would never have thought of Stalin before reading your post. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

I like both names a lot! I never would have made the Stalin connection, instead I have heard of a little boy named [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] getting called [name_f]Stella[/name_f] by teasing classmates…but there is no way to 100% avoid kids getting picked on. If kids want to be mean, they will find a way. :frowning:

[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] makes me think of the character on Scandal, but I really like the name and the nn [name_m]Cy[/name_m]. Similarly, I like the name [name_m]Silas[/name_m], although it was recently used by celebs.

If you fall in love with [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] or [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], go for it!

[name_m]Stellan[/name_m] gets my vote. I think of [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] Skarsgård and don’t think [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] sounds like Stalin at all.

Thanks all for the feedback! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to know people aren’t hearing “Stalin” when they hear [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] at least.

I prefer [name_m]Stellan[/name_m]. I’ve never thought of Stalin! I don’t think the [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] connection would necessarily be a problem unless she’s got more staying power than I imagine in which case we’re all in trouble. But even so I don’t think it’s a big deal – not like naming your daughter [name_f]Miley[/name_f]. I’ve also always associated [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] with Skargaard so for me it has a Scandinavian and vaguely academic air – both good things [name_f]IMO[/name_f]!
