What are your thoughts on [name]Thalassa[/name]? [name]Do[/name] you think its usable in real life?
It literally means “sea” in Greek. To me, it’s a very literal noun name. I feel like it would make English speakers think of Thalessemia.
I’m a native speaker of English, and I’ve never heard of Thalassemia. I Googled it and its a blood disorder, but it seems uncommon enough that I doubt many know what it is. Plus, [name]Thalassa[/name] isn’t the name of the disorder.
Personally, I like [name]Thalassa[/name], but it might be hard to pronounce. It could be seen as Tuh-lah-sah, THE-lass-uh, [name]Tu[/name]-lay-suh, Thah-[name]LAW[/name]-suh and more. P
I just see “ass”. I don’t find it appealing at all.
I think it’s really pretty. It’s a bit like the [name]Melissa[/name]/[name]Carissa[/name]/[name]Alyssa[/name] family, but sounds much less dated. It has Greek mythology and astronomical cred (it’s a moon of [name]Neptune[/name],) and both of those aspects of the name really appeal to me.
I wasn’t familiar with Thalessemia either, but I googled it and apparently it’s a family of genetic blood disorders. I don’t think it’s the first association people will have with the name (it certainly wasn’t for me) and [name]Thalassa[/name]'s similarity to other names makes it seem pretty usable to me.
I really like it too. I think it has a gorgeous sound, and a nice meaning.
Hm, I think it’s pretty, but [name]Thalassa[/name] was the name of a bar my DH used to live not too far from in college. I sadly still see their mermaid in a martini glass logo when i hear the name!
Thanks Berries! I agree with the Thalassemia connection; I don’t think the common person is going to know about it. I feel it’s similar to the [name]Lydia[/name]/Chlamydia thing, and yet [name]Lydia[/name] is gaining popularity with it being at #96.
Anyone else?
Hmmm. I like it, but the “ass” sound definitely jumps out. I slightly prefer [name]Thalia[/name].
Greek. Very Greek. In Australia, [name]Thalassa[/name] is a Greek television program.
I’ve always liked it. I read a book when I was a little girl whose main character had a mother named [name]Thalassa[/name] (she was a mermaid) and I always thought it was pretty.
Maybe because I just got prenatal blood tests for Thalessemia…
Not a huge fan, sorry…have you considered [name]Thisbe[/name]?
It sounds a bit strange to me because of its similarity to “thalassotherapy”, a type of spa treatment using seaweed. But I’m not sure that’s a connection everyone will get either (I heard it as an intern, working on a spa magazine).
I’ve heard of it, but all I hear is ‘this bee’ rather than a name, lol.
Yeah, I haven’t heard of that either. It sounds nice and relaxing though
I like it in theory. I love Greek names and I like that is the name of a moon. [name]IMO[/name], it also looks pretty. But when I try to pronounce it, it sounds like I am saying “the lass awe”. I think pronunciation would be an issue.
I like the idea of the name, but when I read it I automatically say Thalassaraptor…lol
I do like [name]Thessaly[/name] a lot!
I think it’s rad. So salty and splashy. But you have to be a real beach-lover to use it.
[name]Thalassa[/name] [name]Ondine[/name] would be the beachiest name ever.
[name]Thalassa[/name] [name]Maris[/name]…
Does being a high school aquatics athlete count? I love the beach, so a beach image is a plus!
