Thoughts on the Following Boys Names:

Hi Everyone!

I’m not very far along, but I’ve been thinking about baby names since I was a teenager, and I really want to make sure that I do my research over the next 6 months! The list below is a of my favorite boy names, although if anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know!

Any thoughts?

Congratulations! Here are some thoughts…

[name]Hudson[/name] - I think this is okay. It’s a little on the popular side (can’t blame people for liking a good name, haha). To me, it feels like an All-American, male-lead-in-a-movie name.
[name]Blake[/name] - I like this even though it’s not my style. I find it clean, happy, a newer classic.
[name]Cohen[/name] - You should search for other threads on this website about [name]Cohen[/name]. Because it is a very important title/position in the Jewish tradition, some people find the use of this name offensive. It’s not like naming your child Pope or [name]Bishop[/name] (because Cohens are chosen differently), and I would say it’s like naming your child [name]Jesus[/name], but clearly that’s fine in other cultures…I would search for those threads. They get into it more.
[name]Nolan[/name] - While it sounds a little dated to me, I like this name and see it working great.
[name]Sawyer[/name] - I like this, too (esp. its [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] reference and feel). Be aware that there might be little girls with this name, too
[name]Finley[/name] or [name]Finlay[/name] - I really like this (my favorite of your options). I think [name]Finn[/name] and [name]Lee[/name] make great nicknames.

You might consider [name]Cullen[/name], [name]Callum[/name], [name]Conan[/name], [name]Colin[/name], [name]Colton[/name], or [name]Cole[/name] instead of [name]Cohen[/name]. You might also like [name]Everett[/name] (nn [name]Rhett[/name]), [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Preston[/name], [name]Reid[/name], [name]Archer[/name], [name]Paxton[/name], [name]Bryce[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Wyatt[/name], [name]Wylie[/name], [name]Miles[/name], or [name]Bowen[/name].

I love [name]Sawyer[/name] and [name]Finley[/name]. I would go with just [name]Finn[/name] though because [name]Finley[/name] sounds a little girly to me. Im a big LOST fan though so I love [name]Sawyer[/name].

[name]Hudson[/name]-fine, but getting very popular
[name]Blake[/name]-good, solid name
[name]Cohen[/name]-what ellenelle said. This name stirs up some controversy.
[name]Nolan[/name]-I think this is your best pick. It fits with current trends but is pretty unusual.
[name]Sawyer[/name]-I’m just tired of this one. So many people are floating it as a girl’s name-which I [name]DO[/name] NOT GET, but it just seems to be “so hot right now” for everyone who likes surname names.
[name]Finley[/name]-I have been brainwashed into perceiving this as a girl’s name. Sad.

Great opionions, everyone! I’m still very stuck on [name]Hudson[/name], my #1 name (at the moment), although I like the idea of going with [name]Finn[/name] instead of [name]Finley[/name] (as sometimes it can be used for a girl’s name). We want to make sure that we get an uncommon name (but not odd), so the fact that [name]Hudson[/name] is getting so popular saddens me.

The controversy with [name]Cohen[/name] doesn’t really apply to us, as we live in Northern [name]Canada[/name] with little or no Jewish people. However, I do understand your points.

We also like [name]Ryder[/name], [name]Rylan[/name] and [name]Ryker[/name], but our last name starts with an R, and we don’t think that it goes very well.

If you like [name]Ryder[/name], etc. I saw an interesting name on some other threads: [name]Bryar[/name]/[name]Briar[/name].

[name]Hudson[/name] - popularity is offputting, but if you love it as your No. 1, I’d say use it
[name]Blake[/name] - Prefer [name]Blane[/name] tbh
[name]Cohen[/name] - i actually quite like this name. I understand that there is some controversy with this name in some areas in the States, so I’d be wary of using it there. However, [name]Patrick[/name]/[name]Padraig[/name] was once thought too sacred to use in [name]Ireland[/name], however, is now enjoying a healthy run.
[name]Nolan[/name] - like this. Unfortunantly [name]Noah[/name] is geting V popular (tears streaming down my face) so this is a refreshing alternative
[name]Sawyer[/name] - really liking this recently. this and [name]Peyton[/name] should stay boys names in my opinion, and I’d love to us them if i lived in the US, however, i don’t think they’d be taken well in ireland.
[name]Finley[/name] or [name]Finlay[/name] - Must say i prefer other [name]Fin[/name]- names such as [name]Finton[/name], [name]Finbarr[/name], [name]Finch[/name], [name]Griffin[/name]

I like [name]Cohen[/name], [name]Nolan[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] best of your list.

[name]Bryar[/name]/[name]Briar[/name]…what a great idea! Never ever of that name, but I really like it! Thanks so much!

[name]Blake[/name] and [name]Nolan[/name] are my favorites!

[name]Hudson[/name] - eh, I like surnames but this does not feel as wearable
[name]Blake[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]
[name]Cohen[/name] - again it just not feel at all wearable to me
[name]Nolan[/name] - I think of [name]Nolan[/name] [name]Ryan[/name] but I love baseball so I don’t mind the association
[name]Sawyer[/name] - I like it, this one feels more wearable but there are not that many NN options
[name]Finley[/name] or [name]Finlay[/name] - [name]Finley[/name] seems very feminine to me, but I think the [name]Finlay[/name] spelling is a little more masculine but I think I would try to pronounce it as [name]Fin[/name]-lay not [name]Fin[/name]-lee

I am Jewish, and lived in [name]Canada[/name] for many, many years. I can assure you that Jews in [name]Canada[/name] will be just as offended as Jews everywhere else for a [name]Christian[/name] to assume that “[name]Cohen[/name]” is an appropriate name. Furthermore, [name]Canada[/name] still has vast pockets of anti-Semitism, and I would expect your little “[name]Cohen[/name]” to learn that pretty quickly. To cavalierly dismiss Jewish concerns by saying you live in Northern [name]Canada[/name] where there are few Jews is to be insenstive in the extreme, my dear. I would suggest if you like the sound of [name]Cohen[/name] to use the Irish Cohan which is pronounced in almost the same way and will probably not offend anyone.

That being said, you could certainly use [name]Finlay[/name] for a boy in [name]Canada[/name] with no problems, and that’s my favourite of your choices. It acknowledges the Scots Irish heritage of [name]Canada[/name], particularly northern [name]Canada[/name]. It would go well with all those Frasers and Gordons and Grahams. My second favourite would be [name]Blake[/name], which is unisex in most places except here in the South (where I live currently), where it is still very much a boy’s name.

[name]Cohen[/name] can also be spelt [name]Coen[/name] or [name]Koen[/name]. You sound like you live in Toronto. I live in the [name]North[/name] where it is mainly Aboriginal and actually know of many [name]Cohen[/name]/[name]Koen[/name]/Coens. If you understood the culture up here then you would understand why we wouldn’t associate [name]Cohen[/name] with a Jewish name (even though you would).
