Thoughts on the name "Maisie" ... and another choice

We are having a difficult time selecting a name for our first child, a girl. We have two names that we enjoy, but have not been able to make a final decision. The first name we like is [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. Since the name [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is a popular name in the UK, but is not common in the US we have some concerns: 1) [name_m]How[/name_m] would Americans receive the name, ie: it’s trashy, it’s weird, etc.; and 2) Would the name age well with our child. The other name we have on our list is [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Our surname is [name_m]Lewis[/name_m], so we are concerned our second choice would be too many L sounds. Any thoughts on the choices we have are appreciated.

I like the flow of both of the names. And I don’t find [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] sounds awkward at all. I actually think it is my favorite name out of the two. But since it is such a long name I would imagine she would pick up a nickname at some point.

And in regards to the pronunciation on [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] - I know how to pronounce it and I still mess it up sometimes. It is supposed to rhyme with [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and I still manage to occasionally make it sound more like [name_f]Macy[/name_f]. So I definitely think there could be some issues there. But it depends on how particular you are about the pronunciation I suppose.

My vote would be for [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]. It is a very pretty name.

I like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] a lot. Very cute.

I’m in northeastern US, and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] strikes me as a bit vintage, a bit southern, a bit cutesy. No negative connotations. My only worry would be about it aging well. I can easily see it on a young girl or an older lady, but the image of a younger adult to middle aged [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is less clear. I think it’s a great name, but I would probably use it as a nickname myself.

[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is very pretty, but I do find [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] to be a lot of L. I like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] better.

[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is great! It is becoming popular in the UK, and I know a beautiful and clever 10 year old [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] which makes me slightly biased I guess!

Good luck!

I really like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]! I think people in the US would respond well to it; we often follow the UK trends a few years later anyway. The only real concern I have with it is that it’s definitely on the cutesy side and might not age well. That said, it could be a nickname for just about anything that starts with M or has a “may” sound in it (there’s the obvious [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but also [name_f]Mae[/name_f]/[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], even Esmé isn’t that much of a stretch.)

[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is nice, but I agree with pp that it’d be too many L sounds.
