I get mostly negative comments when I mention the name [name]Mavis[/name], but I like it. What are your guys’ thoughts?
I dont like it. Sounds kind of harsh to me.
[name]Mavis[/name] is one of my favorite names. I adore the nicknames [name]Maisie[/name], [name]May[/name] and [name]Mave[/name]. It’s a classic name that will age timelessly.
In the Hotel Transylvania movie, the main character, a teenaged vampire, is named [name]Mavis[/name], and that has shaken off some of the old lady-ness of it. With similarities to [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name], and the rise of the similar sounding Irish [name]Maeve[/name], I do think [name]Mavis[/name] is going to start joining the group of names that are ‘so old they are new’.
But there will always be haters. I know a twelve year old girl named [name]Mabel[/name], and when she was born her mother’s family heavily criticized the choice. But, [name]Mabel[/name] wears her name with pride. Although it is old fashioned, her spunky personality is perfect for such an unusual name. The relatives that once hated the name now love it.
I love it because one of the cutest little girls I’ve ever known was a [name]Mavis[/name]. I’m not sure how I would feel without that association. It does have great nickname potential as mentioned above. If I met a young adult or teenager who went by [name]Mavis[/name] I would bet she was pretty cool. It’s totally vintage.
I don’t like the sound at all unfortunately, it just sounds unattractive and harsh. I also volunteer with the elderly and there’s a [name]Mavis[/name] there… so it’s always associated with an old lady for me now.
I’m not fond of [name]Mavis[/name] at all, but I do like the nn [name]May[/name] or [name]Mae[/name]. [name]Maeve[/name] is very cute and trendy now too. I think [name]Mavis[/name] has a dorkie sound (not to offend, please forgive) but that’s just how I hear it and [name]IMO[/name].
I automatically think “[name]Mavis[/name] [name]Beacon[/name] Teaches Typing.” It has a harsh sound, and just sounds old to me.
While [name]Mavis[/name] has great potential nicknames, you could get those same nicknames from other names that you could use instead.
Can’t say I am feeling the love for that name at all…
Makes me think of 1977.
Like all vintage names, some people will [name]LOVE[/name] them and some will LOATHE them. If you love [name]Mavis[/name] then it’s a great choice! Personally, I think it definitely has spunk.
My sister’s name is [name]Maeve[/name]- which I love and find very strong. [name]Mavis[/name] isn’t as pretty to me… for some reason it conjures the homely girl in Catholic school. Sorry!
I absolutely love it. To me [name]Mavis[/name] sounds spunky, smart, adventurous, vintage and modern at the same time. It’s a great name and I would love to see it used more often.
Very “on-trend” and great nn options. I like it!
I do like the name [name]Mavis[/name] although it still feels just a tad too old to me. I definitely want to use it in the middle in one of my combos however.
I think [name]Mavis[/name] is a great name, ripe for revival, it feels very spunky to me!
I will be the weird one who loathes the name [name]Maeve[/name], but absolutely loves [name]Mavis[/name]!
I love it. It makes me think of a spunky girl.
It doesn’t rub me the right way for an innocent baby name… I immediately associate is with the word malice (scary!) and the Top [name]Gun[/name] movie character [name]Maverick[/name] (cheesy).
Honestly, I think you could say that about every single name.
I like [name]Mavis[/name] a lot too.
A few years ago I probably would have said that I hated it.
But then I met the most adorable little girl named [name]Mavis[/name] and now it’s totally beautiful to me.
I’d never use it, but I do think it’s pretty.
