Thoughts on the name North?

I was reading a blog earlier and ran across the name [name]North[/name] for a boy. I’ve heard it before but always skipped over it for some reason, but I’ve really started liking it. I love the imagery it conjures. What do you think of it?

I like it!
[name]Weston[/name] & [name]Easton[/name] are preppy & cute but [name]North[/name] is just much cooler imo. It’s a word name that sounds strong & since it’s a direction it seems like it hints at hopes of your son finding his way through life. It makes me think of travel as well. And it sounds sorta naturey. Like I could imagine it in a sibset with [name]Forrest[/name] or [name]River[/name].
Makes me think of [name]Atlas[/name] but I like [name]North[/name] much more cause [name]Atlas[/name] conjures images of an object while [name]North[/name] doesn’t

Its starting to grow on me too. I think I like it best in the mn spot, but it could work as fn too. I have a thing for nature names and [name]North[/name] is a good, lesser known choice.

I love [name]North[/name]! To me, the most distinguished direction name.

I love it! It’s on my short list but can’t get DH on board. I do think you need a substantial surname to pull off a one syllable first name; three syllables sounds best [name]IMO[/name].

Our last name is 3 syllables and it ends with -son. So it works I guess! I’m having trouble with middles actually. It would almost have to be 2 syllables…1 would sound silly, and 3 might sound like too much with a 3 syllable last name. Hmm…

I love it. It’s been inching into my heart lately.

I like it! It’s just as handsome as [name]West[/name] but more rugged. Very nice.

Hmm… I sort of like Northern more. Considering the names are [name]Easton[/name] and [name]Weston[/name]… Northern seems to flow a bit nicer.

Someone posted something wonderful about [name]North[/name] on here a few days ago, and now I love it. Before I was just lukewarm on it.

Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums!

For example, my son’s name is North and his MN is the same as his father’s, a mainstream name that had been passed down for generations. North for us is symbolic of knowing your direction, being true to your path. We love the name and hope it inspires him in his life.

I remember reading that now, very sweet. I picture the [name]North[/name] star and it kind of gives me a [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name] vibe… not sure why. “Second star to the right, straight on til morning”

It’s a word, not a name. If you’d use north then why not left or right.

[name]Aren[/name]'t [name]Grace[/name], [name]Hope[/name], and [name]Faith[/name] just words? And yet they’re pretty widely accepted as names. Weren’t all names essentially just words at some point?

Would it be a problem when you live in North Carolina? I prefer it as a mn choice and this opinion is coming from a girl of the Great White [name]North[/name]! I know, I should be ashamed of myself!

I don’t understand your logic. Eastern and Western would be similar to Northern, not [name]Easton[/name] and [name]Weston[/name].

Many names are word names or started as word names in other languages!

I love the name [name]North[/name], it’s actually my cousins middle name, his first name is [name]Kian[/name], and he told me that he wishes it was his first name because it’s different. I say go for it, if you’re considering it

Exactly! And some don’t even mean good things…
I think [name]North[/name] is an absolutely lovely, meaningful, and strong name.

btw, in Portuguese and in Spanish, [name]North[/name] is “Norte” - you can use that spelling, if you don’t want the english word.

(And in both languages there is the expression “lose the [name]North[/name]”, which means to lose your path, your logic, because in the old days the sailors were guided by the [name]North[/name] [name]Star[/name]. That connotation of “[name]North[/name]” as a guide and as your path is beautiful)

I’ve also recently began to love [name]North[/name]! It has connotations for me of mountains, snow and rolling hills. And the rain. I think it’s really beautiful.
