Is [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] a legitimate spelling? We are debating mainly between this name and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] nn [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] for our daughter - little sister to [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]. My mom argues that zuzu makes much more sense with [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] spelt with a z rather than [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] but I really don’t want people thinking we were going for a yooonik spelling…
I don’t think [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] is ‘yooonik’ I’m pretty sure that’s a fairly well recognised/accepted way to spell the name. I like it more with a ‘z’ now I think about it, and [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] is a brilliant nickname!
I think that [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] could definitely work for [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] spelled with an S rather than a Z. I really don’t think nicknames need to be directly and obviously related to the full name as such. I do prefer [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] spelled like this myself, however, [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] works too.
With [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] though, I think [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] fits beautifully, and prefer [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] here over [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f].
My best friend from university’s name is [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] and she’s from [name_f]France[/name_f]. [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] is very well established as a name and I hear/see it more often than [name_f]Susan[/name_f] or [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], so to me it feels not at all made up or misspelled. We all call her Zu or Suza. She hates [name_f]Suzie[/name_f] and despises [name_f]Suzette[/name_f] (which to her misfortune her parents call her by). [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] sound beautiful to me as a sib-set. I’ve never been a fan of [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] as it reminds me of the words hare, hair and hairy mainly. Also, [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is still very masculine to me. And [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] is the cutest nn ever!
Congrats on the selection of [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f]! I don’t hear that often with new babies. I am a [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f], born when [name_f]Susan[/name_f] was at the peak of popularity. I liked that it was just a little more unique that all the many other girls in school named [name_f]Susan[/name_f]. There were just a couple of [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f]-s. Some of the [name_f]Susan[/name_f]/[name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] girls went by the nickname of [name_f]Suzie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sue[/name_f]. I never did.
Yes, [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] or [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] is a correct spelling. It is very rare to see it spelled [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]. Definitely use the ‘z’ if you are using the nickname ‘[name_f]Zuzu[/name_f]’ – which I think is a very cute nickname.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] one word of warning: No one, I mean no one, can spell it right unless they are at least 50 years old and sometimes the over 50’s can’t get it right either. When I give my name, people write it down as ‘[name_f]Susan[/name_f]’. If I say “[name_f]Suzanne[/name_f], with a ‘z’”; it gets written as ‘[name_f]Suzan[/name_f]’. [name_m]Just[/name_m] something I live with. Maybe it’s time us Suzannes unite and insist on it being spelled right!
Congratulations! Wishing my name-sister health and happiness!
There are many international variations of this name, and [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] is listed. Meaning, origin and history of the name Susannah - Behind the Name [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is my favorite spelling, and I don’t think it’s at all necessary to include the Z in the original name to use nn [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f], but if you like it better with the Z connection, by all means, go for it! [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] is super cute, but [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] is one of my all-time favorite nns. Sisters [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] are spunky and adorable [name_f]IMO[/name_f]!
I have [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] on my list so I wouldn’t even bat an eye at [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] nn [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f]. I wouldn’t let your mom talk you out of the spelling you love over a reason like that.
I’ve come across the spelling before. I’m not sure whether it’s more like [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] (compared to [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]; a legitimate spelling from another culture) or more like [name_f]Ashlee[/name_f] (which is just a trendy respelling of [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]), if that makes sense. I like the look of [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] much more, personally, and [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] makes perfect sense for me, but I can see how [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] would be more obvious for [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f]. There’s always the Polish [name_f]Zuzanna[/name_f], which I’m a massive fan of, but that doesn’t have the same feel as [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] at all, so I can understand why it might not be an option here. I like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] nn [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] more than [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] nn [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f], but I like [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] nn [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] much more than [name_f]Harriett[/name_f] “[name_f]Hattie[/name_f]”, if that makes sense.
I think [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] is a recognized alternate spelling…I would not say it’s yooonik or cr8tive. I think you could totally still use nickname [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] with the traditional [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] spelling but I actually think [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] is a little more interesting. I also like [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] with the Z when paired with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] with the X. If you had a [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], I might say go [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]. But I think with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], I 100% prefer [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] is a little more intuitive with the ‘z’ spelling. I also love the previously suggested, bolder, Polish variant [name_f]Zuzanna[/name_f] but I could see how some might shy away from it. I think [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] is the perfect solution.
Regarding [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], I love [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] but the full [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]…feels hairy to me. Can’t help it. I prefer [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] over [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]/[name_f]Hattie[/name_f].
I like the Z of [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f], it makes an already lovely traditional name feel fresh and modern. I’d say go for it, don’t let unusual spellings put you off - I’m an [name_f]Aimee[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Amy[/name_f] and I’ve always found my unusual spelling to be a bonus, people remember your name more and you stand out from the crowd.
All this feedback is awesome. To be honest, I also am having a hard time getting past the [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]/hairy connection, but I just love [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] so much. [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] alone is just too nicknamey for my style though.
The polish [name_f]Zuzanna[/name_f] is beautiful but I actually speak Polish (though I am not a bit polish myself) and know how this is properly pronounced - zoo-za-n-na…you make the n sound twice. Cute in polish, but way too difficult for me to expect non-polish speakers to pronounce. I am feeling better about the [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] spelling. [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] is more traditional which is usually my style, but in this case, I think suzanna lends itself more easily to the nickname we want, [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f], and I think I like the way it looks a bit more too.
My youngest daughter is [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], but she is known as [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] to everyone. I think the classic spellings are the best. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] or [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]. The (h) spelling is more old school/Old Testament and the (a) ending is modern/[name_m]New[/name_m] Testament. Most people, without guidance, would spell my daughters name [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] about 75% of the time. I do not think you should use the [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] spelling just because you want to use the [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] nickname. I think you lose a little of the dignity and classical beauty of the name when you use something other than [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]/[name_f]Susanna[/name_f], and I think it would often be misspelled.
This is very helpful input. No matter how we choose to spell this name I am sure the will be spelling issues, but it is good to hear how most people have wants to spell your daughters name. My name is katelyn and nobody [name_u]EVER[/name_u] spells it correctly, which I completely undstand and have come to live with. But it has given me a deeper appreciation of names that are spelled “correctly”. I do not think I need the z to call her zuzu but I do like how it looks with the z personally. If you read this, what are your other kids names?
You are completely right that there will always be spelling differences no matter what. You are wise to choose the spelling that appeals to you the most! We have heard lots of positive feedback on the name and the nickname [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] too, so I think it is a great choice whatever the spelling. We do get a lot of “but what’s her REAL name?” when she is introduced as [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f]. Our daughter’s names are [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f].
