Thoughts on these girls names?

I’m realising a quick way to work out which names I like most by whether I agree with praise or rush to defend them from criticism. If I do neither, I’m probably ambivalent! [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to rate, rank or whichever other way suits you best. I don’t love nicknames but will put preferred nickname in brackets.

beatrice (bea) - i’m not a huge fan of beatrice, it still feels a little dated to me, plus all i hear is ‘beetroot’. it does sound very soft and sweet though, and i love bea as a nickname. 6/10

eudora (dora) - it just doesn’t appeal to me, neither does dora, although it definitely works as a nickname. 4/10

sybil - i much prefer sylvie/silvie/sylvia; i can only picture sybil on an old lady. i find it a bit harsh, too, which is odd because it doesn’t have any obvious harsh vowel or consonant sounds. still, not a fan. 3/10

winifred (winnie) - cute! i can see winifred being revived in the next few years, and i adore winnie. 8/10

cressida (cressie) - 7/10

maude - 4/10

araminta (minty) - i think araminta is so cool. i’m not too big on minty, but it definitely works. ari, minnie, or even rita could also work as nicknames. 8/10

gwendolen (gwen) - i love gwen! i think works really well as a standalone. i’m not as keen on gwendolen; i prefer gwenyth or guinevere. 6/10

blythe - 7/10

susannah (zanna/sanna) - 6/10

isabeau (beau) - 5/10

marjorie (jorie) - 5/10

rosamond (romy/roz) - very pretty, romy is such a cool nickname. 7/10

(all of the names on your list are wearable and overall, very sweet. i think we just have different styles).

Hmm…

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] ~ 6/10 ~ a very classy name that feels elegant and I like nickname [name_f]Bea[/name_f] prefer [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] though as to me [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is spunky and has the cute nickname [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]

[name_f]Eudora[/name_f] ~ 4/10 ~ this name sounds very serious isn’t a favourite of mine I prefer from the ‘Dora’ names [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] or [name_f]Adora[/name_f].

[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] ~ 7/10 ~ really growing on me spunky and bright

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] ~ 7/10 ~ such a nice vintage choice that feels really refreshing I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]

[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] ~ 3/10 ~ I genuinely really am not a fan of this one feels snooty and I dunno not user friendly just really not appealing

[name_f]Maude[/name_f] ~ 7/10 ~ could see this being the next [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] I like it

[name_f]Araminta[/name_f] ~ 6/10 ~ a strong that to me has dark academia vibe. I like [name_f]Minty[/name_f] as a nickname. I’m not sure how usable this is if your not an upper class downtown [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] type

[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] ~ 7/10 ~ a graceful elegant choice that comes with the sweet nickname [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]. I think she’s great just potential spelling issues with len/lyn ending

[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] ~ 9/10 ~ love such a happy sweet name really bright and gorgeous name

[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] ~ 9/10 ~ another fab choice [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] feels vibrant has a sweet fruity sound and I like the association with lilies

[name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] ~ 7/10 ~ a pretty twist on the usual Isabel/Isabella I think [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] is lovely just could be some pronunciation issues

[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] ~ 6/10 ~ in theory I really like this one a cool vintage choice that would be striking very refreshing for a baby but I’m not sure if it’s too clunky like I find [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]. I dunno making my mind up on this one.

[name_f]Rosamond[/name_f] ~ 8/10 ~ I love ‘rose’ names this one is very graceful pretty name

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

Here is my favorite to least favorite:

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (Bea)-Beatrice just has it all. It’s vintage, well known, not over done, feminine, not frilly, smart, sweet, lovable & has great nns. I like [name_f]Bess[/name_f] & [name_f]Bette[/name_f], but [name_f]Bea[/name_f] is the most obvious & darling as well.

[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] (Gwen)-Ooh yay, you spelled it my favorite way! [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is more common, but it’s not a very popular name anyway, so I think that this spelling shouldn’t be too confusing. I just think that it looks so much more elegant w/the ‘e’ rather than the ‘y’. [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is strong & feminine & interesting but well known. [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] is nice. I like [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] even more.

[name_f]Eudora[/name_f] (Dora)-Eudora is another one of those strong yet feminine, classic yet slightly exotic, not too complicated yet not popular names. All of the good qualities! I think that it may be a little tricky to say & spell, but not a huge deal. [name_f]Dora[/name_f] is cute as a nn. I’ve thought of [name_f]Eudora[/name_f] nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f] too.

[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] (Zanna/Sanna)-I think that [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is lovely. It’s sweet & kind of bookish. It has a vintage vibe, but seems fresh too. I don’t like [name_f]Zanna[/name_f] or [name_f]Sanna[/name_f] that much…Susannah has so many nns! I like [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Sally[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f] or [name_f]Anna[/name_f].

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] (Winnie)-I like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] in theory because it’s interesting & old fashioned. But I think that it sounds a bit clunky. [name_u]Love[/name_u] love love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] though.

[name_f]Araminta[/name_f] (Minty)-It’s not really a name that’s on my radar, & it feels a little bit heavy. But it’s really unique & kind of fun. I like the nn [name_u]Ara[/name_u] more than [name_f]Minty[/name_f]. [name_f]Minty[/name_f] would be a cool name for a horse…I think I may have had a [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] horse named this when I was a kid. :racehorse:

Blythe-I think it’s a little hard to say, but that may just be my issue. I love the happy feeling it gives off. And it’s short & sweet.

Maude-I like it in theory, but think it sounds a bit bland. It’s still a fun choice. And I like the nn [name_f]Maudie[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you? It may be somewhat unavoidable.

Sybil-It doesn’t do much for me, but it’s not awful. I understand the appeal. I just don’t like the sound that much.

[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] (Romy/Roz)-Rosamond nn [name_u]Romy[/name_u] is creative. I’m guessing you’re saying ‘Roz-uh-mond’? I prefer the ‘Rose’ pronunciation, but I guess that [name_f]Roz[/name_f] is more common. [name_f]Roz[/name_f] sounds like a cranky old lady to me.

[name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] (Beau)-I like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] a lot. Which this might get mistaken for sometimes. I don’t care for [name_u]Beau[/name_u] though. It means boy, so it’s a little odd. I like [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] & Ibbi as nns.

[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] (Cressie)-It’s different, but not my cup of tea. I don’t like the sound of it.

[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] (Jorie)-Different, but just dated & kind of clunky.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

[name_f]Rosamond[/name_f] 9/10 [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f]! Elegant! The o spelling is quite pretty as well
[name_f]Araminta[/name_f] 9/10 A little over the top but I can’t help loving it. It just sounds so pretty
[name_f]Maude[/name_f] 9/10 A refined and upright name. It sounds pretty to me and very strong.
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] 8/10 [name_m]Classic[/name_m] & not used much now. I also love [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] 8/10 [name_m]Classic[/name_m] and can’t go wrong with it.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] 8/10 A little abrupt but so Victorian and cute. Very Downtown [name_u]Abbey[/name_u]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] 8/10 A bit plain for me but always classic
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] 8/10 Cute! [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name.

[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] 7/10 Find this a little twee but still like it a good deal
[name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] 3/10 [name_m]Just[/name_m] not feeling it! It sounds too twee because of the ‘bow’ sound
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] 3/10 Sounds too harsh for me
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] 2/10 Sounds to harsh for me, as well

beatrice ‘bea’ - love this!! so sweet and classic!

eudora ‘dora’ - not my favorite. I prefer isadora, but the nickname dora is stunning!!

sybil - one of my faves! makes me think of downton abbey, which I love.

winifred ‘winnie’ - both winifred and winnie are so sweet!

cressida ‘cressida’ - really like cressida, but I’m not sure on cressie.

maude - maude is amazing! she really deserves more love.

araminta ‘minty’ - ooh this is so unexpected!! I love it! araminta is criminally underrated, and minty is so sweet!

gwendolen ‘gwen’ - i adore gwen, and really like gwendolen, the -en spelling is actually my preference.

blythe - one of my new loves. i love the short and sweet qualities she has.

susannah ‘sanna’ - susannah is one of my oldest favorites. she’s so classic and fancy. sanna/zanna aren’t for me, but i
do prefer sanna to zanna.

isabeau ‘beau’ - not my favorite. i love isabelle/isabel, but not really isabeau. i also don’t like beau for a girl.

marjorie ‘jorie’ - i’m coming around to this name!! i dislike jorie though.

rosamond ‘romy’ - for some reason I dislike this spelling. it makes me want to pronounce it like ‘roz-uh-mond’, rather
than ‘roz-uh-mund’ I vastly prefer rosamund. romy as a nickname is so inspired!

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - I wish I could love this name, but I sadly have a negative personal association.

[name_f]Eudora[/name_f] - Not my cup of tea, but I like [name_f]Dora[/name_f]! I always think of Tiana’s mother from Disney’s The [name_f]Princess[/name_f] and the Frog because it was my little sister’s choice each time for movie night.

[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] - I haven’t seen Downtown [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] but this name has really grown on me lately! It’s ancient, strong, and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] could be an adorable nn.

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - It feels a little clunky, but I think that’s part of the charm. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is so darling!

[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] - Very elegant and feminine!

[name_f]Maude[/name_f] - A solid, classic name with a ton of history, plus the meaning is amazing.

[name_f]Araminta[/name_f] - A very interesting and unique name, however I don’t like mint flavoured food and that’s what this name reminds me of. I might like it more with nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f].

[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] - I can’t decide if I prefer the len or the lyn spelling but either way this is one of my favourite names!

[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] - I don’t think I will ever get to use this name but I love the association with [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables, one of my favourite stories.

[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] - Another one of my favourite names, it’s biblical, classic, and sophisticated. Though I do prefer [name_f]Susie[/name_f] or [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] as an nn!

[name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] - I prefer [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] but I do like how fresh and unique this name feels.

[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] - This name has also grown on me recently, similarly to [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] the clunkiness is charming.

[name_f]Rosamond[/name_f] - [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is my favourite name, and this variation feels less frilly and more grounded than other [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names. [name_u]Romy[/name_u] is genius and so refreshing!

It’s funny you said that as my main concern with Beatrice is how much more popular it is than the rest of my list. I live in England where it’s happily sat in the top 100, and I think it’s safe to say Sybil and Araminta aren’t getting the same levels of popularity any time soon!

Not a fan but also never heard anyone call a Maude Maudie so I wonder how much I could avoid it. Too twee for me (yes I know I also like Minty as a nickname :joy:)

@craftedasia I don’t mind the nicknames [name_f]Bea[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but this had made me realise I’m just not sold on them. [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_f]Cressie[/name_f] so much either. I prefer [name_f]Minty[/name_f], [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], [name_f]Zanna[/name_f] and [name_u]Jorie[/name_u]. Think I may have to consider whether there’s any point keeping the longer names where I don’t love the nicknames.

@alessia810 thanks for the comments, I’m not a fan of [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] for some reason. Think it’s partly that I don’t like [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] and also that it only reminds me of [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I also find it hard to distinguish the final syllable anyway.

@Indilee thanks for the comments. I prefer [name_f]Eudora[/name_f] as a whole to [name_f]Dora[/name_f] but can’t figure a way around that one. I can see what you mean about [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] sounding harsh but I think it’s part of the reason I like it. Some charm to girls’ names that aren’t all frilly (even when the rest of my list is very frilly!)

@Greyblue fantastic comments as always!

@tori101 I’m actually starting to come around on [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]. I’d never use it because I think even for me it’s pushing the boat out a bit but it can stay a guilty pleasure!

@AuntieofGretel [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] is actually for a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. I loved the name anyway but finding out the names were linked made it a no-brainer for me. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a shame it’s seen poorly a lot of the time. I’ve also never actually seen Downton but [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] does remind me of some nice Victorian stately homes!

[name_f]My[/name_f] thinking at the moment based on which ones are jumping out at me is

Debate: [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] (don’t love any of the nicknames, but adore the full name - it’s been my debate with this for months)
Lose: [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (not selling itself to me and the popularity problem isn’t one I can get over), [name_f]Eudora[/name_f] (it was an [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] replacement but not feeling it), [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f]
