Thoughts on these names?

Hello there Nameberry community,

Looking for some input into name choices (and alternatives) as my partner has name fatigue!

I’m currently well into my third trimester with my first bebe and we’re still quite unsure about what we’d like to call this mystery baby boy or girl. A bit of background: I’m half American, half German and my partner is Irish with a three syllable McE… surname. We live in the UK but will eventually settle back in Ireland, so whatever name we choose should make sense there. We are thinking of using Hart as a middle name (a family name) for a boy and for a girl depending on whether it works with the name (alt. female middle name would be [name_f]Robyn[/name_f]). There are many names he likes and many that I like but only a few that cross over, and they are a bit all over the place.

Some of these being…
Boys: [name_m]Moses[/name_m], [name_u]Eli[/name_u], [name_u]Bran[/name_u], Seamus, Peader
Girls: [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_f]Clodagh[/name_f]

We both really liked [name_m]Moses[/name_m] (even though we aren’t particularly religious) and have been in the habit of talking about baby [name_u]Mo[/name_u], but my lovely sister-in-law was convinced we COULD NOT name our baby [name_m]Moses[/name_m] if we didn’t want him to get teased in Irish schools. So any other appealing ‘[name_u]Mo[/name_u]’ name suggestions are welcome…

Thank you in advance for reading:)

Congratulations!

Firstly, I think [name_m]Hart[/name_m] is a lovely name which works excellently as a middle for both genders. [name_f]Robyn[/name_f] is also very sweet.

From your list of boy names, I like [name_u]Eli[/name_u] and Séamus the best. Other boy names beginning with [name_u]Mo[/name_u] are a bit tricky, but these might work:

Morgan
[name_m]Moshe[/name_m]
[name_m]Moab[/name_m]
[name_m]Moby[/name_m] (although the [name_m]Moby[/name_m] [name_m]Dick[/name_m] references would probably be endless)
[name_m]Mongo[/name_m]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_m]Monty[/name_m]
[name_m]Mordechai[/name_m]
[name_m]Moray[/name_m]

From your girl’s list, [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] is my absolute favourite. I think [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_m]Hart[/name_m] could be a lovely name. Alternatively, [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_m]Hart[/name_m] or [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Robyn[/name_f] seem very pleasant and happy names to me.

Thank you @amal2970 I really like [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] (which also happens to be a family name!) but it hasn’t come up till now. Also, [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] is nice for a boy I think…

I agree, [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_m]Hart[/name_m] is lovely and a top contender if this little one comes out a girl! Thanks again.

Hi there.

Here are my thoughts on the list:

Boys-

Moses-I see nothing wrong w/this. It’s a little clunky for my personal taste, but it’s a good solid vintage name. It’s strong, masculine, unique but well known, & [name_u]Mo[/name_u] is simple & friendly. I think a little [name_m]Moses[/name_m] would be perfectly fine & interesting in a U.S. school where I live. Is there something particular about the name [name_m]Moses[/name_m] in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] that makes it particularly teasable?

Eli-This is another good solid classic. At least in my neck of the woods, it’s fairly over done. I like it a bit more than [name_m]Moses[/name_m], but honestly don’t find it as special, you know?

Bran-I do like this, but just seems like it should be a nn for [name_m]Brandon[/name_m]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_u]Bran[/name_u] seems a little short, but it’s not awful by any means.

Seamus-I love it! It’s one of my very favorites. I have a nephew called this. We have a long ‘Mc’ name too, & I have lots of little Irish named nephews. It’s so charming, witty, handsome, unique but fairly well known, & has the sweet nn of [name_u]Shea[/name_u]. I’m guessing that it’s less unique in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], so I don’t know how that factors for you.

Paeder-Is this supposed to be Peader? Is it said just like [name_m]Peter[/name_m], but spelled in an Irish way? I like it [name_m]Peter[/name_m] a lot. I guess it depends on how common this spelling is where you plan to settle down on whether or not this is a good idea.

Girls-

Rosa-Oh, that’s pretty. Simple, elegant, slightly exotic, lovely rose imagery. I kind of prefer [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] or just [name_f]Rose[/name_f], but [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] is different & a great choice.

Juliette-That’s beautiful. Sweet & friendly, but smart, elegant & classic too.

Maya-This is fine. I prefer [name_f]Maia[/name_f] for some reason. Unless you’re looking for ‘[name_f]May[/name_f]-uh’. It’s a little boring, but a pretty name.

Clodagh-This is honestly not my style, but it’s interesting. I’m just not used to it. I know it’s totally usable in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f].

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your thoughts @MichelleM! I think just the biblical connotation with [name_m]Moses[/name_m]? Nothing else I know of specific to [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]…

Oops, yes, I meant to write Peader, the Irish for [name_m]Peter[/name_m], but pronounced Pad-er. It’s fairly well known in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] but not super popular. Thanks again – helpful to hear different perspectives!

I really like all of your choices! I know practically nothing about [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], though, so I’m afraid I can’t be much help with what will work there.

My only commentary would be there is a well-known Disney channel character called [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_m]Hart[/name_m], so if you choose [name_f]Maya[/name_f] I might not use [name_m]Hart[/name_m] as the middle name. I’m not sure if the show aired/was popular in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] or the UK-- I’m in [name_u]America[/name_u] and never actually watched it myself, but still know of the character’s name.

[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] is definitely one of my all time favorites. Beautiful and simple international classic that can never become old-fashioned and that everyone will understand. [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_f]Robyn[/name_f], however, sounds too much cartoonish or pseudonym-like for me. (Please, don’t be offended, it is just an opinion!)

[name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is a sold classic that flows well with [name_f]Robyn[/name_f]. So does [name_f]Maya[/name_f] but [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is feminine yet strong while [name_f]Maya[/name_f] has a spunky and whimsical vibe. Both are very pretty.

[name_f]Clodagh[/name_f] is unfamiliar for me and it isn’t in top-1000. [name_u]Unique[/name_u] and interesting choice.

[name_m]Moses[/name_m] is nice and traditional but it has a strong religious feeling. There is nothing wrong with it through.

[name_u]Eli[/name_u] is, like [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], one of my favorite Western names. It is short and sweet but still interesting and unbeaten.

[name_u]Bran[/name_u] sounds good but, as it was already said, too much like a nickname. However, short male names are rather popular nowadays so there wouldn’t be problems with it when he grows up.

[name_m]Seamus[/name_m] seems beautiful, quite unusual and very Irish. Big nickname potential.

Paeder. If it is traditional and well-known in country where he is going to be raised, it would be rather good choice. If not, there might be problems with spelling (as a person with quite rare for [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers name, I find it really annoying to spell it to everyone who is not speaking my national language by letters).

Thank you @taisia1 – nice to hear [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] are both so beloved (but not too trendy either!)

Helpful to bounce ideas off others who aren’t family;)
