I really like [name_u]Arden[/name_u], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] is nice to see on a boys list for once, also! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite would be [name_m]Evander[/name_m].

I am not a fan of [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m], [name_u]Walter[/name_u], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Clement[/name_m]. They are just NMS. I would lose [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] and [name_m]Clement[/name_m] from those.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

Here are my thoughts-

Ambrose-I don’t mind it. I can’t quite get into it, but I find it interesting & old fashioned. I do love the idea of [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] nn [name_m]Abe[/name_m].

Wilfred-I like [name_u]William[/name_u] & Fred(eric), but [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m] sounds too stuffy for whatever reason. [name_f]Do[/name_f] love the nns [name_m]Fred[/name_m] & [name_u]Freddie[/name_u].

Francis-I don’t mind this. [name_f]My[/name_f] dh loves this name, & finds it super masculine. Which I find weird, since it’s unisex in my opinion & I prefer it for a girl spelled [name_f]Frances[/name_f].

Arden-I think that this is used way more for girls, but it sounds boyish to me. I don’t think that the sound is particularly interesting though. I love love the nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u].

Douglas-It’s refreshing these days, but maybe a little bit dated. Doesn’t do much for me, but not a bad name. I don’t really like [name_m]Doug[/name_m] though. It just sounds a little frumpy. A bit of a stretch, but I love the idea of [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] nn [name_m]Lad[/name_m].

Walter-This is cute. Kind of a good classic sweet old man name. I like it more in theory than the sound, but a fun choice either way. I actually know a nine year old boy named Walter/Walt, & still have a hard time believing it’s his name sometimes!

Ernest-Another one that I like in theory more than actually saying it out loud. [name_u]An[/name_u] interesting vintage choice none the less.

Percy-I want to like this, but find it a bit too cutesy. Better as a nn for [name_m]Percival[/name_m], which is fine but kind of snooty.

Alistair-I like this a lot. It’s smart & handsome & charming. And this is my favorite spelling. Somebody on these boards had mentioned [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] nn [name_m]Alec[/name_m]. I love that idea!

Benedict-I love Ben(jamin), but [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] sounds too stuffy. There was a little toddler [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] at the doctor’s office the other day, & it just didn’t seem to fit.

Orson-It’s not bad. I prefer [name_m]Oren[/name_m], but that’s because I love Hebrew names! Kind of strongly associated w/Orson [name_m]Wells[/name_m]. Which isn’t necessarily good or bad.

Edmund-I prefer [name_m]Edgar[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] or [name_u]Edward[/name_u]. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] sounds the stuffiest of the ā€˜Ed’ names.

Aubrey-Definitely better for a boy, but so trendy for girls.

Clement-I should like it since I adore [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] for a girl, but it’s not my cup of tea. It sounds kind of a abrupt. Cool unique choice though.

Augustus-I prefer just [name_u]August[/name_u], but this is handsome. Lots of good nn options too.

Evander-I don’t mind it, but just don’t like the sound much.

Isidore-I think that it’s a interesting choice, but maybe just a little clunky.

I think in conclusion, your names are a little too old man-ish for me, but I really appreciate them if that makes sense! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

All your names are classic and old though many are timeless.
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]: I think this is a lovely name for a boy
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]: I personally am not a fan of the name however there is nothing wrong with it.
[name_u]Francis[/name_u]: I love this name. The only issue I foresee is that it is typically a female name. This could possibly lead to bullying. But it is a lovely name. Maybe give a masculine middle name that he can switch to if wanted.
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]: not my taste but it’s ok.
[name_u]Douglas[/name_u]: the nickname [name_m]Doug[/name_m] is so cute for a little boy!!! [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_m]Dougie[/name_m]!
[name_u]Walter[/name_u]: a bit dated in my opinion but still usable
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m]: same as [name_u]Walter[/name_u]
[name_u]Percy[/name_u]: same as [name_u]Walter[/name_u] ab [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]- a bit dated.
[name_m]Alastair[/name_m]: I absolutely love this name. It is on my list and I think it is classy and adorable.
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]: very classy. I like that he could always shorten to [name_m]Ben[/name_m] if he thought the name was too over the top. I like this name very much.
[name_m]Orson[/name_m]: sounds too much like a 90 yo man for me sorry.
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]: I don’t know why but I really don’t like this name. I like [name_u]Edward[/name_u] but the ā€˜mund’ I just don’t like.
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]: Same comment as [name_u]Francis[/name_u]. But I do like the name
[name_m]Clement[/name_m]: I love love love this name. From your list it is my favourite. I think the nicknames [name_u]Clem[/name_u] or [name_u]Clemmie[/name_u] are adorable. This is one which I plan to use for a future son.
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]: I love [name_u]August[/name_u] but [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] just seems a bit too much. Nickname [name_m]Auggie[/name_m] is adorable!
[name_m]Evander[/name_m]: I like it
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]: never heard of it before but I like it.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] - [name_u]Arden[/name_u] (love the way it sounds), [name_u]Walter[/name_u] (I think it is such a sweet name to bring back), [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (love the [name_m]Auggie[/name_m] or [name_u]Gus[/name_u] nickname options),

Like - [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m], [name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_u]Douglas[/name_u], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m],

Dislike - [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] (feels too old man to me), [name_u]Percy[/name_u] (I strictly think of [name_u]Percy[/name_u] Jackson), [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] (I just don’t like [name_m]Ed[/name_m] variation names), [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] (I always picture this as a girl name), [name_m]Clement[/name_m] (not a fan of the sound of it), [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] (feels hard to pronounce and spell)

@cactusgram Oh that list is fab, thanks for sending it over, and for the top 5 which is pretty close to my top 5 out of these as well!

@regionlatbest thanks for the ordering and the comments, I appreciate it!

@Randomdude555 thank you. I’ve found I’m not rushing out the gate to defend [name_u]Percy[/name_u] so that might be one to drop.

@AmyVermeersch I love how many people are saying [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] is so old man. [name_f]My[/name_f] big worry about it is I know about four little Ernests and worry it’s getting too popular!

@Hilary112 thanks for the comments! I keep getting recs for [name_u]August[/name_u] but not a fan. (My options would go [name_u]August[/name_u] < [name_u]Augustine[/name_u] < [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] but I think that’s probably opposite of most people) I struggle with saying [name_m]Auggie[/name_m] without sounding like I’m about to go ā€˜oggie oggie oggie, oi oi oi’ so I’d probably stick to [name_u]Gus[/name_u].

@Greyblue thanks for the comments, nice to see how people see them

@MichelleM some great comments there. From the ones I am not jumping to defend so much, I think I could drop [name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_u]Percy[/name_u] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m] (though [name_m]Evander[/name_m] seems to be on most people’s favourite lists out of these, c’est la vie)

Probably narrowed myself down to
[name_u]Love[/name_u]: [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m], [name_u]Douglas[/name_u], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_u]Arden[/name_u]
Like: [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_m]Clement[/name_m], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]
Lose: [name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_u]Walter[/name_u], [name_u]Percy[/name_u], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]

Which puts me in a better position for useable length lists, thanks everyone! [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] was one of my all-time loves but it’s just not giving me that sparkle at the moment and I didn’t rush to defend it in my head like some of the others :joy:
