I never really see these names being discussed anywhere and I was just curious what impressions people had of them. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like them? Why or why not? What kind of vibes do they give you? I’m not considering them for myself, but just curious!
[name_u]Shannon[/name_u] → quite solid, but I just find it a tiny bit rough round the edges, a bit spiky. Maybe it’s just I prefer [name_f]Sian[/name_f]?
[name_u]Mandy[/name_u] → this was a fave of mine when I was younger. It’s sweet and kind of fun
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f] → do you say it dee-anna or deen-uh? I’ve encountered both! I prefer the deen-uh one, but either way, it has charm
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] → clunky, old-lady vibes but kind of cool
[name_f]Vanna[/name_f] ->sharp and sassy, I like it
[name_u]Shannon[/name_u] is a randomly very popular name in my generation in my area, on par with other girl names like [name_u]Kelsey[/name_u], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f], etc. I know a lot of Shannons! I think it’s fine on a guy but skews more feminine to me due to that association. I agree that it’s also simultaneously not the most feminine-sounding of names, either. I wish [name_f]Sian[/name_f] was more usable in the US because I love it.
I agree that [name_u]Mandy[/name_u] is sweet and fun. I think it sounds like a mom / auntie name to most people nowadays but I actually think it has a youthful sound and wish it was still in style.
I personally say [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] as dee-anna, but I think [name_f]Deana[/name_f] is ambiguous. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister’s best friend is [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] and it hit me yesterday that she’s the only [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] I’ve ever met. It’s one of those names you know of but don’t really know anyone with. It’s got a little bit of a 60s/70s vibe but I can actually see it on a new baby too.
I agree that [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] is kinda clunky cool. I wonder why I don’t see it mentioned much.
[name_f]Vanna[/name_f] has always been a favorite of mine, and I don’t mind the [name_f]Vanna[/name_f] White association (that may be more American tho? but is definitely the number one association with the name). I like V names and you’re so right it has a bit of sass and glamor, although with the popularity of [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] I can see people thinking that [name_f]Vanna[/name_f] sounds truncated on its own.
[name_u]Shannon[/name_u] - It’s a solid good name. I used to like a lot when I was younger. It’s a little bit older-sounding and definitely not as popular now, but it’s still nice.
[name_u]Mandy[/name_u] - I also used to really love this name when I was younger. I actually prefer it as a standalone, instead of a nickname for [name_f]Amanda[/name_f]. [name_u]Mandy[/name_u] sounds very fun and lively, even though it’s not popular right now.
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f] - I pronounce it dee-ah-nah, but that’s because I know a girl (maybe 11-12 ish) named [name_f]Deanna[/name_f]. It’s a sweet and charming name.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] - It sounds very old-ladyish, but it could be really cool.
[name_f]Vanna[/name_f] - It sounds very sharp and harsh, but I actually kind of like that, probably because I’m a fan of a lot of Slavic girl’s names (Natalya, [name_f]Inessa[/name_f], [name_f]Aleksandra[/name_f], [name_f]Veronika[/name_f], [name_f]Viktoria[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Alissa[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], Yuliya…)
[name_u]Shannon[/name_u] - It’s a GP of mine actually! It’s not my usual style and I know it’s kind of a mum name, but I really like the sound, and [name_f]Nona[/name_f] makes for an adorable nickname
[name_u]Mandy[/name_u] - It’s alright, but the “man” part of it really stands out and I just find [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] sweeter!
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f] - Not my cup of tea, I always think of it as [name_f]Diana[/name_f] but “wrong” when I see it
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] - Cute! Obviously quite retro, but I think it could be a fun out-there way to get to nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u] or [name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Vanna[/name_f] - A bit too “van” for me, like the vehicle. But I don’t mind it as a nickname for Savannah/Vanessa/etc.!
Shannon-- this name sounds very 1950s or 60s, like [name_f]Sharon[/name_f]. I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it, and I can’t really picture it on anyone younger than 40.
Mandy-- I definitely liked this name a lot when I was younger. I think it’s still a pretty name as a nickname, and it could also be a nice name for a pet, especially a farm animal.
Deanna-- this sounds pretty out of date, but maybe from the 1930s or 40s, so it would be almost ready for a comeback. I don’t particularly like it, but it’s a sophisticated, well rounded name-- if it is pronounced “Dee-anna”. If it were “Dean-a”, I would like it a lot less.
Thelma-- this is extremely out of date and kind of ugly, but in a funny way that I could imagine it working well on a pet (especially a grumpy senior cat), or a character, but not a baby.
Vanna-- sorry, but I don’t like this at all. Something just seems off about it, and adding the “V” to [name_f]Anna[/name_f] just seems unnecessary, and it also just makes me think of the word van.
[name_u]Shannon[/name_u]- due to knowing a lot of people my age named [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] it feels a little dated to me. However its a lovely name that makes me think of the river [name_u]Shannon[/name_u]
[name_u]Mandy[/name_u]- again is one that I know more people my age named [name_u]Mandy[/name_u] so it feels a little dated. However not as much as [name_u]Shannon[/name_u]. Its sweet and bubbly
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f]- I actually know more women named [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] who were born the generation before me (70’s/80’s) so again slightly dated. Not my favorite I prefer the brighter sound of [name_f]Diana[/name_f] or [name_f]Dinah[/name_f].
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f]- I could see this one maybe becoming popular in the next 10 years. It has a very 20’s vibe. I would say its in the same boat as [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] and [name_f]Bessie[/name_f], where there’s nothing really wrong with it, its a good name, but for some reason the sound doesnt appeal to me.
[name_f]Vanna[/name_f]- to me is stull tied to [name_f]Vanna[/name_f] White, but I could see this one catching on with a younger generation. Its got the cool zippy ‘v’ sound with the familiarity of [name_f]Anna[/name_f].
[name_u]Shannon[/name_u] - I went through a phase where I LOVED [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] but somehow the lovely association that made me really like her somehow has been replaced by another [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] that I was never a very big fan of. I do associate it more with [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] (I blame having got into football and the [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] Sharpe association, plus not regularly interacting with a real-life Shannon), but I do find it likable in general once I put the not-so-pleasant [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] out of my head.
[name_u]Mandy[/name_u] - for some reason this spelling does nothing for me? LOVED [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] growing up and I read this young adult historical fiction series with an [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] nn Mandie… [name_f]Mandie[/name_f] I instantly find sweet, adventurous, nostalgic, instantly likable and approachable. [name_u]Mandy[/name_u], however, somehow feels standoffish and like one of the popular girls. Funny how a slight change in spelling does that lol.
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Diana[/name_f] infinitely more, but [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] is ok! I actually work with two of them, my own age… and I didn’t really think [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] was that common for my age group. Both are really lovely people but I don’t know them well enough to fit [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] to a specific personality. When I see [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] I have a positive but not really special connection to the name. I just sort of think “nice” and “dated” with equal measure.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] - invariably think of [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] and Louise; not the hugest fan although I feel like I should like her more. She feels like [name_f]Thea[/name_f] meets [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
[name_f]Vanna[/name_f] - nice but I invariably think of [name_f]Vanna[/name_f] White. I like [name_f]Zanna[/name_f] (which I believe is somehow related to Susanna) a little more.
I love [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] but can’t personally use it, otherwise it would be on my list. [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] is also nice. [name_u]Mandy[/name_u] is cute, retro vibes, but I think I prefer it as a nickname, maybe for [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]. [name_f]Vanna[/name_f] would be right up my alley with the “ann” bit and the cool V but it makes me think of the word vanity. [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] feels very dusty and clunky but it would be cute on a little kid.
