Thoughts on this (made up?) name

Hey everyone.

So I was babysitting the other day and while watching this really cute kids’ movie, I came across the name Mimzy. I may be the only one, but I think its so adorable and sweet!

What are your guys’ thoughts? Also, as it seems to be made up or at least extremely uncommon, I can’t find a thing on it. Can anyone think of or come up with some fuller versions?

I’m pretty sure it’s to do with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland. At last that’s where I know it from (it’s also the name of the internal cataloguing system in the [name_u]London[/name_u] [name_m]Science[/name_m] Museum).

I think [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] would definitely be cute with the nn Mimsy. Most things beginning with M would probably also work - [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] etc.

I’ve heard it as a name to call a grandmother on a TV show, but never as a name. It’s a cute nickname, but I think it definitely needs a full name for it. The first name that I thought of was [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] nn Mimzy. That would be the best fit. [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] can be a nn for [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], so I think you could use Mimzy for that, as well. Really, any name with an ‘mi’ in it could get you there…[name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f], [name_f]Mima[/name_f], [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f], etc. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] could feasibly get your there as I know a [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] that goes by the nn [name_f]Mimi[/name_f].

This definitely made me recall that movie The Last Mimzy (can’t believe it came out 10 years ago!). The name did remind me of [name_f]Mitzi[/name_f], a diminutive of [name_f]Maria[/name_f].

@maerad, It’s in [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland? Really? I guess I’ll have to go back and reread it… [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] would work wonderfully as a full name, thanks!

@chelsanne22, I love the idea of Mimzy as a nn for Whilhelmina, I hadn’t thought of that. Thank you!

@saintdollface, That’s actually the movie I’m referring to. I’m pretty sure I watched it when it first came out (10 years? Wow, that makes me feel only slightly older), but I was a kid then and so names wouldn’t have had stuck with me as they do now. And [name_f]Maria[/name_f] is a good idea, thanks for the thought.

I’ve heard mimsy used as a word for a woman’s parts, so I’m afraid I REALLY can’t see it as a name! But judging by the responses of other posters here, it’s not a commonly used term at all and I hope I haven’t ruined the name for you, haha. It does have a cute sound. [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] or [name_f]Mini[/name_f] (especially if the girl is petite) would be really sweet too.

I especially love the suggestion of [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] as a full name. The only one I can think of that hasn’t been mentioned is [name_f]Maxima[/name_f].

@bonfireazalea, oh really? [name_m]How[/name_m] weird…and awkward…I’ve never heard that term used before (and I have a sick-minded teenage brother). Thankfully, it takes a lot to deter me from a name. And I really like the suggestion of [name_f]Maxima[/name_f], thank you.

Reminds me of The Jabberwocky by [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] [name_u]Carroll[/name_u] … Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Also the movie the Last Mimsy. I agree it would make a sweet nickname for most M names!

I’m pretty sure the last Mimzy was based, at least a bit, by something from [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland. I vaguely remember them reading a few lines from the book, but having never read it myself I can’t say for sure.
