Hi everyone
I’ve been thinking about the name Hareton (pronounced hair-tun) (yes, I know, I’m obsessed with the Brontës) and I was wondering how usable you all think it is.
Be honest! I won’t be hurt
- Usable as a first
- Usable as a middle
- Not usable at all
I love Hareton! It definitely works in the middle, and I do think it could work as a first too. It’d just come down to how confident you are, I think

I don’t mind it but I can’t see a nickname from it that’s useable? [name_u]Or[/name_u] has a nice sound. So for that reason I think it works as a MN.

@anon25197097 thank you for your thoughts:) The lack of nn for such an unusual name is a downside
@gia.berry thank you! I just don’t know if I’m brave enough to use it!
I think it’s perfectly useable. I’m not a fan of the way it sounds, but that’s just me.

I think the name is definitely usable as a middle and only usable as a first if you’re brave enough. [name_u]Harry[/name_u] and (possibly) [name_u]Tony[/name_u] could work as nicknames.

I kind of do think it’s usable— I know exactly where the name came from (great book!) and don’t personally love the association with the character, but if that doesn’t bother you (and it’s 100% fine if it doesn’t! I do still love the name [name_m]Heathcliff[/name_m]…) then I think it’s usable enough, though I think it works best as a middle. I do strongly think of rabbits/hares, but that’s not the worst association in the world!

Thank you! I actually quite like the character and I do enjoy [name_m]Heathcliff[/name_m] as a bit of a gp

Hareton is cool! I think it’s usable as a fn or a mn – nn [name_u]Harry[/name_u] would be cute, if you’re into it.

Hareton definitely strikes me as a family surname that goes in the middle!
