hi berrries! i’ve seen the name ransom on here a few times and at first i thought it was just . but now i kinda like it. i like the connection to Jesus and how he gave his life for our ransom and I think it goes well with my sort of trendy boys name list like Cru, Renley, River, Sol, Wells, etc. so, thoughts on this name and how it fits with other boys names i like?
It’s an odd name for sure, but I think people could definitely get used to the sound and be able to separate the sound from the word meaning. [name_f]My[/name_f] father’s doctor is actually a Dr. [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] so I hear the name alot, so I guess for me it’s easier to separate meanings as I’ve heard it a lot as a name and am used to it. I think it’s a perfectly doable name once people stop associating the name with the word
I think it goes fine with your list but I don’t really like it even with the meaning. Id prefer a different Biblical connection honestly. All I see is cut out letters in a ransom note unfortunately.
Bonus points for rhyming with handsome though!
I like [name_m]Ransom[/name_m]. I don’t think it’s particularly risky and I’ve heard it used before. [name_f]My[/name_f] connection is [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_m]Riggs[/name_m], which is a neutral/positive one.
I would never even think of the religious aspect/connection, though I am not religious so maybe it’s that and other people would think of it.
It is quite unusual but not unheard of! It makes me think of [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] from the movie Knives Out. I think it’s usable and it does fit with the rest of your list, particularly [name_u]Renley[/name_u] and [name_m]Wells[/name_m].
I’m torn on [name_m]Ransom[/name_m]. I was raised on and off in the church and it admittedly took until very recently to realize what this meant in that context. I have always thought of it more in a “wild wild west” vibe or in a criminal way, such as paying ransom for a kidnapping victim. I’m afraid that is still my main association with it sorry!
I do think it could work with the other names on your list but it does feel like a bit of an outlier.
I like it and your meaning!!
It’s different and not something you hear everyday, but where I’m from it is actually an old name that has been around for along time. Also, in the Knives Out movie, there is a character named [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], played by [name_u]Chris[/name_u] [name_m]Evans[/name_m].
I think it fits with your other names on your list too!
I know a young boy named [name_m]Ransom[/name_m]. Yes, it’s unusual, but very usable. Have you read C.S. Lewis’s space trilogy? It features a character named [name_m]Ransom[/name_m].
@auroradawn has a little [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] i believe, so i’m sure she has some insight on what it’s like in the real world (if she’s willing of course!)
Me too! This and the word ransom, as in paying a ransom, which sort of turns me off of the name. However, the fact that there’s a film character with this names makes it seem less out-there by a touch, which helps me get past the word’s definition.
I also think of C. S. [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] space trilogy, in which I loved the character’s name being [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], and the spiritual meaning. I didnt think of the kidnapping association until I heard it discussed on nameberry and that did make me love it a little less, but I still think it’s very handsome and meaningful and he could always use a nickname if he wanted options.
I wasn’t sure on [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] at first but @seawillow 's love for it helped endear it to me!! It’s kind of rugged and handsome and now I’m familiar with it, it doesn’t feel odd to me
[name_f]My[/name_f] [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] just turned four, and I’ve never once (yet) regretted his name! It went on my list after I read C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy, which pps have mentioned. He’s a sort of [name_m]Christ[/name_m] figure, so the name is a play on words, as it’s also a Germanic patronymic surname meaning Ranulf’s/Randolf’s son. The ‘ran’ syllable means “shield,” so the name could also carry the idea of protection. Being a [name_u]Christian[/name_u], I like the religious meaning, [name_m]Jesus[/name_m] is our ransom, etc., but I almost think of it as a hidden meaning because most people don’t think of it. “Ransom note” is the first connotation, so it has a bit of a bad-boy vibe. Oh well. I also like the reference to the [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] & [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] [name_m]Stewart[/name_m] movie, The [name_u]Man[/name_u] Who Shot [name_u]Liberty[/name_u] Valance. Stewart’s character is named [name_m]Ransom[/name_m].
In the real world–it gets the occasional raised eyebrow. If I bother to explain how we chose it, most people go “Oh cool!” Some people go “Handsome Ransom.” But it doesn’t get the enthusiasm our second son’s name, [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], does. Though we do have a neighbor who lit up when he met our [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], since he named his son [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] for the Space Trilogy too! (Which is pretty wild, since it’s not even in the Top 1000!) We don’t use a nickname, though [name_m]Rance[/name_m] works; one of my brothers suggested [name_u]Randy[/name_u], before he was born, but we’ve never used it.
From your list–I like [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_u]Sol[/name_u]. [name_m]Wells[/name_m], too, though it seems a bit of a Nameberry darling right now [name_f]My[/name_f] own boy style is more obscure-Biblical. We would have named a third son [name_m]Zebedee[/name_m].
wow! that’s so interesting to hear and crazy about your neighbor! : )
I think it is a fun name but would absolutely never associate it in any way related to religion. It is sweet that you see it as biblical and have a personal connection to it but I wonder if most people would just tie it into the traditional hostage sense.
