Thoughts on this unique name?

So I realize that surnames aren’t everyones thing, but I really like them. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering what your thoughts are on the name [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] for a girl? I love how different it it but still simple.

It means [name_m]Olaf[/name_m]'s son, and also reminds me of [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]. A big no from me, I’m afraid.

It has a nice enough sound, but I do associate very strongly with the [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] twins- not necessarily a negative thing, but for me it falls into the same category as names like [name_f]Jolie[/name_f], [name_f]Anniston[/name_f], [name_f]Winslet[/name_f], etc. Ditto @eoxima with the very male meaning. I really like the similar [name_f]Olwen[/name_f] though.

I love hearing it as a surname, but the way “ol” is pronounced it doesn’t appeal to me as a first name.

2 Thumbs down.

I don’t care for it. Sorry!

Agree with the other posters. I think too it’s good to consider, as Eoxima pointed out, that “-son” surnames stem from old Nordic naming traditions and are inherently masculine. If you’re curious, you can read about it here:

http://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Surnames

While this tradition is not currently used much, and definitely not in the USA, it’s useful information to have I think.

Have you considered the lovely name [name_f]Olwen[/name_f]? Here’s the pronunciation (though it seems a bit all over the place depending on the source): http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/livinginwales/sites/howdoisay/names/index.shtml?o

I don’t love it either. I don’t generally dislike last name names (eg. [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]), but [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] just doesn’t look or sound appealing to me. Sorry.

If you like I don’t see why not. I’m not a fan of surnames as first in general but I don’t see any problems with [name_m]Olsen[/name_m]. I don’t think it’s a good choice if you want something unique because while it isn’t used very often as a first, it is a very common last name and so it isn’t really unique at all.

First thought- the [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] twins. :frowning:

Too masculine-sounding. I also don’t like the ol- beginning.

I have to agree with the others. I’m not generally a fan of surnames as first names, though. But [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] doesn’t seem unique to me, since it’s a relatively common surname. I’d consider something unique if it is generally not heard often, or would be the first someone met. So maybe as a first name it seems unique, but it’s still a common name. [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] might be a good nickname option.

I have to say that I agree that it’s too masculine for my taste for a girl…just about anything w/“son” in it just says boy to me (which includes [name_u]Madison[/name_u] & [name_u]Addison[/name_u]). I also have the very similarly spelled Oleson attached to [name_m]Olson[/name_m]…Oleson as in [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] Oleson from [name_m]Little[/name_m] House on the [name_u]Prairie[/name_u], which is another negative connotation. Sorry…

I’m not really wild about this one - partly because I don’t care for any of the things it might shorten to. I think there are probably nicer surname choices out there if you really must do this, and if you dig a little. But to each their own.

If you were going to go with [name_m]Olsen[/name_m], though, use it on a boy. I admit that [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] [name_m]Branch[/name_m]'s [name_u]Owen[/name_u] eventually grew on me, but I don’t find anything particularly feminine or appealing about [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] for a girl.

But I’ll also admit that I like very obviously feminine names, as my signature should tell you. Aspen and River are about as gender-neutral as I can personally manage.

[name_m]Olsen[/name_m] is fine for a boy, but for a girl it’s just horrible.

[name_f]Olwen[/name_f] is a very nice alternative; [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] seems is too associated with the twins for me.

Boy name? Maybe. Girl name? Definite ‘no’ for me. Sorry. Also, connection to [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] twins makes it more negative for me. Sorry to be a downer on this name question.

Not my style - I admit I am not a fan of the last name-names, but if this one was going to be used, it sounds more boy than girl. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Alison[/name_f]?

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

My first thought was the [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] twins like everyone else.
If it were used as a FN I think it would fit a boy more than a girl.

I don’t like it, particularly for a girl. I don’t find that there’s anything feminine sounding about the name.
