My family are practicing Christians although I consider myself an agnostic and I have been for a long time. However, I do attend church servises occasionally to educate myself about the [name]Christian[/name] faith and I happen to like some biblical names. Would it be wrong if I decided to use them one day? Names such as [name]Mary[/name], [name]Samson[/name], and [name]Raphaela[/name] (just a few on the top of my head). When I’m much older and have kids, I will let them decide if they want to practice Christianity or learn about agnosticism. Thank you for reading!
I think it’s fine to use [name]Christian[/name] names- the names in question are a lot less tied to the Bible (at least to me.) I don’t think it’d be that big a deal. I’m converting from Catholicsm to Judaism, but I don’t think it’d be totally wrong if I used the names of Saints. I think it’s fine.
I love a number of biblical names and I’ve always been atheist. I don’t think it’s a big deal. I like a lot of names that comes from languages I don’t speak… no big deal, imo.
I don’t think something like [name]Messiah[/name] is a good idea, but [name]Mary[/name] wouldn’t make me blink.
I think it’s fine! A lot of Biblical names are so classic that I don’t think anyone would bat an eye to see it on someone with any religious preference, kwim? Like [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Mary[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], or [name]Joseph[/name].
I have a friend who is atheist, I believe (or possibly agnostic, I can’t remember which), and 90% of the names on her list are Bible names. She just really loves the names, and nobody really seems surprised by it. There are a lot of weird names in the Bible, lol, but there are also a lot of great ones! I don’t think you should let it keep you from using a name you love, especially if it’s something as classic as [name]Mary[/name]. I definitely wouldn’t use [name]Jesus[/name] (or the variant [name]Joshua[/name]) if you don’t really embrace the teachings of the Bible, but something like [name]Mary[/name] or [name]Samson[/name] or even Raphaella, why not? They’re great names.
I don’t see any harm in using biblical names, they are a part of our culture and the the bible has had a major influence just from the literary standpoint. I plan on using a biblical name for my daughter and I’m an atheist so… lol
I would however avoid naming my kid a name like [name]Christian[/name] or it’s variations. But then again I’d also avoid naming my kid a name like [name]Pagan[/name], which I’ve also seen people use. Any name that denotes that the bearer practices a particular religion I wouldn’t use.
