We are STILL trying to come up with the perfect name for our baby due in [name]December[/name]. We’re set with [name]Theodore[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name] if it’s a boy but are so stuck for a girls names.
names we’ve liked so far are:
[name]Wilhelmina[/name] nn [name]Willa[/name] which we recently decided was out because [name]Willa[/name] sounds too much like [name]Willow[/name] (a name I’m not a fan of) when it’s next to our last name.
[name]Beatrice[/name] - out because my sister calls her baby “B” and I would want to call my baby “[name]Bea[/name]”
[name]Louisa[/name]- we like this name but we’re just not sure it’s right for us
[name]Nora[/name]- Getting popular and no nicknames, but we do like the sound of it.
[name]Eloise[/name]- though we would want to avoid the popular [name]Ellie[/name]/[name]Elle[/name]/[name]Ella[/name] nickname so this might not be a good option for us.
[name]Harriet[/name] nn [name]Hattie[/name]- we love this name but are worried [name]Hattie[/name] will get too popular for our taste ([name]Tori[/name] Spelling named her daughter this recently)
And today we thought of [name]Velma[/name]…what do you think?
[name]Velma[/name], [name]Thelma[/name], etc…just not my style and a little out of sorts. I really like [name]Nora[/name] or [name]Harriet[/name] nn [name]Hattie[/name] best of all. Those are great names!
The only [name]Velma[/name] I know, my grandmother, hates her name. For that reason alone I would never consider it. [name]Wilhelmina[/name] and [name]Harriet[/name] are much more beautiful. [name]How[/name] about [name]Mina[/name] instead of [name]Willa[/name] for a NN for [name]Wilhelmina[/name]? [name]Ever[/name] read Dracula? I have a soft spot in my heart for [name]Harriet[/name] and hate that I can’t use it for my baby girl. [name]Hattie[/name] is a cute NN and it is possible that it could become popular by itself, but I don’t see [name]Harriet[/name] becoming popular and there’s a good possibility that your daughter would prefer [name]Harriet[/name] to [name]Hattie[/name]. I think it’s an awesome idea to provide her with a more mainstream NN option just in case she likes it better than unusual [name]Harriet[/name] too though.
[name]Velma[/name] is still very much a member of the [name]Mystery[/name] Gang. [name]Fred[/name] and [name]Daphne[/name]'s prospects are great, but [name]Velma[/name]'s? Not so much.
I like [name]Louisa[/name] and [name]Eloise[/name] from your list. [name]Both[/name] could be called [name]Lou[/name]/[name]Lulu[/name]/[name]Lola[/name] if you have to have a nickname. Does the [name]Luisa[/name] spelling appeal to you any more?
I love [name]Velma[/name]. It reminds me of [name]Velma[/name] [name]Kelly[/name], and all I can think of when I hear it is Chicago and sexy, 1920s glam. I say go for it.
I think [name]Velma[/name] is cool. I would love to meet a girl named [name]Velma[/name]. Retro fabulous!
Why must people speak so authoritatively about things that are just a matter of opinion? [name]How[/name] about an “I” statement? “I think [name]Velma[/name] is out of fashion… I wouldn’t be caught dead calling my kid [name]Velma[/name]!” etc. I don’t see how [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Hilda[/name] are any more acceptable than [name]Velma[/name]. I happen to love [name]Harriet[/name], but I think it has an almost gratingly strong sound, and that’s part of what makes it excellent. In my opinion, it’s “ugly-beautiful”, like [name]Hilda[/name] and [name]Velma[/name]. I see [name]Velma[/name] as a name for a girl who’s hip, funny, smart, beautiful, and perhaps a tad ironic.
I am a fan of [name]Velma[/name]! I do prefer [name]Salma[/name] & [name]Verna[/name] because they have less cartoonish associations, but a similar vibe. [name]Wilma[/name] is kind of a [name]Willa[/name]/[name]Velma[/name] crossover you might want to consider. [name]Norma[/name] is kind of a [name]Norah[/name]/[name]Velma[/name] crossover.
I love [name]Beatrice[/name] & I love the Russian nn [name]Beata[/name]- bee-etta. I think [name]Busy[/name] could work too. [name]Betty[/name] or [name]Birdie[/name]? I love [name]Beatrice[/name]!
My cousin just named his daughter [name]Selma[/name], which I think is pretty cool! So, I don’t think [name]Velma[/name] is too out there. Bonus - she’d almost definitely be the only one in her class!
Also, if [name]Vera[/name] works, and [name]Emma[/name] works…why not [name]Velma[/name]?
From your list, I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Nora[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] ([name]Bea[/name] is so sweet!) and [name]Louisa[/name]!
