I was looking at names and came across [name_f]Aida[/name_f]. My first instinct was to pronounce it as eye-da but from reading some comments, some say it can also be pronounced as eye-ee-da. I think it’s a great name but I really like the eye-ee-da pronunciation.
Which pronunciation do you like best?
Is there and alternate spelling for the eye-ee-da pronunciation? My first thought would be Ayeda?

I know someone with the name, pronounced eye-ee-duh. I like it, but prefer [name_f]Ada[/name_f]. I know that diacritical marks aren’t accepted on American birth certificates, but depending on where you are, Aïda is a simple way to avoid mispronunciations.
First off, I love the name [name_f]Aida[/name_f] so much! I have always pronounced it as eye-da, but that is because I went to school with someone with this name and that is how she pronounced it! I don’t think that you need to change the spelling of the name in order to get the eye-ee-da pronunciation! I think you’d be okay with just [name_f]Aida[/name_f] because the musical is pronounced like eye-ee-da so some people may pronounce it the way you want because of the musical! I hope this helps a little!
I love [name_f]Aida[/name_f]! I have always said it like the [name_u]Verdi[/name_u] (?) opera, ah-EE-dah. I’ve not seen the opera, but I learned a bit of the music when I took piano lessons, and always found [name_f]Aida[/name_f] beautiful. I’m not sure it’s something I’d have the guts to use (I feel more connected to other pieces of music/opera more), but I think [name_f]Aida[/name_f] is fantastic, and the only way I can think of to retain ah-EE-dah and not loose the charming [name_f]Aida[/name_f] spelling would be Aïda, with the accent. Otherwise, I’d just use [name_f]Aida[/name_f] and explain, “It’s said ah-EE-dah,” whenever it comes up. After a while, I would think people would catch on.

Thanks for your replies so far. I actually went to a pronunciation website, forvo.com, and listened to the Eng. pronunciation (probably should’ve done that first but…) & everyone was eye-ee-da so that’s a good thing. I really don’t like changing the spelling of names just so people can pronunce it the way I want lol.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know if I’ll ever use it but I just thought it was a very pretty name either way it’s pronounced.

Not a fan. I like [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_f]Ida[/name_f].
I read Japanese writing translated into English characters, called romaji, a great deal, and most of words with ‘ai’ pronounce it eye-ee, so I don’t see a problem personally, as that was my original thought about the pronouncitation.
Like [name_u]Ash[/name_u] said it’s Ay-EE-duh like the musical.
