[name]Hi[/name],
I have been considering the Scottish name [name]Hamish[/name] recently and just wondered what people’s thoughts / opinions were on this name?
I am also wondering if pronounciation in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name] would be an issue? The name is pronounced Hay-mish, I am wondering if people will think it is pronounced [name]Ham[/name]-ish?

I love [name]Hamish[/name]. It’s so handsome and, well, Scottish. A good friend of mine just named her son [name]Ewan[/name] [name]Hamish[/name]. I do think it has the potential for teasing, especially in the States where it isn’t commonly heard. I’m sure kids would call him [name]Ham[/name] or Hammy at some point even though it’s not pronounced like ‘ham’. Because of that, I, personally, wouldn’t use it. I’m a wimp. I do love it, though and would love to see a few more Hamishes running around.

I may have an unpopular opinion, but I find [name]Hamish[/name] incredibly unappealing. I just don’t see the attraction. I don’t like the sound, the spelling or how it looks. Not a fan at all and has a lot of teasing potential. Sorry!
I like it! I don’t think I would ever use it but I would like to see it used. I am in the US and I would say Hay-mish to avoid the [name]Ham[/name] sound and any [name]Ham[/name]/Hammy NNs. I think as long as you said Hay-mish and corrected in other pronunciation it would be fine 
I’m not really a fan, sorry. I’m with [name]Lucy[/name]–it just doesn’t look or sound appealing to me at all.
And all I can think of is [name]Christina[/name] from Ugly [name]Betty[/name], and that line when she was pregnant with [name]William[/name]… “I’ve always been rather partial to [name]Hamish[/name] myself–I always thought it was so handsome!” Or something along those lines. I haven’t watched Ugly [name]Betty[/name] in forever, haha.
I don’t think Americans would really say it right–until I heard it mentioned in Ugly [name]Betty[/name], I always assumed it was [name]HAM[/name]-ish not HAY-mish…
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Hamish[/name]! It’s awesome! I only have ever known one, but he was Canadian (but born in [name]Ireland[/name]). He was amazingly talented and he definitely made me love the name.
[name]Seamus[/name] is getting used in the States, and I don’t see why [name]Hamish[/name] couldn’t fly as well.
I don’t like it. I did think it was pronounced [name]Ham[/name]-ish, and Hay-mish doesn’t make it sound more appealing to me. Sorry!
I thought [name]Hamish[/name] was Yiddish. I’m glad you taught me it was Scottish. I too think it would be a difficult name for a child in the USA.
I like [name]Hamish[/name], I think it will work fine in the states but you may have to explain it once or twice
i’m surprised at people’s rxn to hamish. i think both it and seamus are fairly standard and reasonably well known names in north america. i can’t imagine mispronouncing or teasing being a problem. hamish is a strong and handsome name.
I read your op title as [name]Ham[/name]-ish. I don’t think it translates to US English well so it cows down to how inch you wish to deal with miss pronunciation.

I am from the UK but live in [name]Canada[/name] now, [name]Hamish[/name] in the UK wouldn’t be an issue at all, but may well be a problem here…I will have certainly have to have a good think about using the name. I personally really like it but am not too sure if I could handle the possible issues with wrong pronounciation!!
