Thoughts, please?

What are you thoughts on the name [name]Collier[/name]?

I was looking for an alternative to the name [name]Colton[/name]. So, I went from [name]Colton[/name]>[name]Colter[/name]>[name]Collier[/name]>[name]Cuyler[/name].

From what I remember, the pronunciation is sort of like Col-yher (please, correct me if I am wrong). It means coal miner yet, in French it means necklace.

I am not sure if I have referred to this name on Nameberry or not. [name]One[/name] appeal that I like is that it is not in the Top 1000* but, do you think it still has that -er trend; which is not what I was trying to do.

  • Referenced from another site, in 2011, there were 45 Boys named Collier, and ranked at #1961. On the other hand, there were 9 Girls named Collier, and ranked at #4622.
  1. Opinions?
  2. [name]Do[/name] you think the french meaning is a turn off?
  3. Does it sound feminine?
  4. I am from the South, so do you think it may cause pronunciation issues. [name]Even[/name] outside of the South.
  5. Keep it as a surname. Natural, keep looking.

Thanks Berries,
Natural.

It doesn’t really appeal to me, although I think it sounds a lot nicer than [name]Colton[/name]. Pronounciation can often be an issue with those ‘fresher’ names out of the top 1000…
I wouldn’t say it sounds feminine, but to me it’s not decidedly masculine either; I think the French meaning could easily embarrass your son through his teenage years if his peers find out.
All in all, I would suggest it as a middle name, which would be great… But if you keep looking and always come back to this one, then go for it!

I think pronunciation is an issue, and the similarity to the dog breed [name]Collie[/name] really gives me a less than favorable opinion of the name. I think I’d still with just [name]Cole[/name], [name]Colton[/name], Colson or [name]Colston[/name] before going to [name]Collier[/name].

Hmm. I [name]LOVE[/name] THE NAME [name]CUYLER[/name]!!! Please use it! [name]Collier[/name] is nice but [name]CUYLER[/name] is amazing!!!

[name]Collier[/name] is french would be pronounced col-ee-ay. But of course you don’t have to pronounce it this way. I much prefer your other 3 choices, especially [name]Colton[/name] and [name]Cuyler[/name].

Where I live (Vancouver, [name]Canada[/name]) there is a news anchor named [name]Lynn[/name] [name]Collier[/name]. She is the only person I have ever heard with [name]Collier[/name] in their name. I think it could work on a boy but I do think of it as feminine because of the association I have with it. She says it Call-yer. I personally think you should just stick with [name]Colton[/name]. [name]Just[/name] my opinion.

Good luck!

I think it will have major pronunciation issues, and for that reason, I’m not fond of it. I think I see the French “necklace” too, and I also picture Collies - as in the dog.

I like your other choices of [name]Colton[/name], [name]Colter[/name] and [name]Cuyler[/name].

Maybe you’d also like [name]Cole[/name], [name]Colin[/name], [name]Colby[/name], [name]Connor[/name], [name]Conrad[/name], [name]Conroy[/name], [name]Corbin[/name]…

Thanks everyone. [name]Collier[/name], is one of the names I am curious about as I revamp my list, I admit, I sort of like the name, but not as much as calling my son this name everyday. You know how you can be interested in one type of name, and they give you other suggestions or names similar to it, well, that’s what is going on for me.

As I was typing my post, I realized that [name]Collier[/name], was close to the dog breed [name]Collie[/name]. I just didn’t want to mention it and wanted to read what others thought and/or see if they would come to the same conclusion.

It all started with the name [name]Cole[/name]. I originally like [name]Cole[/name], because it comes from the first two letters of my first and middle name, I just always thought it was too short on it’s on. So my name journey began.

@avesnames, thank you for telling me the french pronunciation. I figured it would not be the same, I just didn’t know the correct way, although I was a bit close.

I do like [name]Cuyler[/name], I am just afraid this will be another name I will and eventually he will constantly have to correct others on the right pronunciation. The [name]Kyler[/name] spelling looks like a smoosh name to me. I don’t care for [name]Kyle[/name] much and [name]Tyler[/name] was a favorite when I was younger, but I just don’t want to take it there. If you know what I mean?

Why are boy names so gosh darn hard? I know there is a name that I will fall in love with, it’s just wont show itself. :frowning:

We named our son [name]Cuyler[/name] and we get lots of complements on it! No one I knew had heard of it before so at first people’s reactions were “Oh, i’ve never heard that. interesting…” But now people like it and I still get a lot of complements from strangers on it, like, “Wow, that’s a neat name!” We love it. I read the name in a book when I was girl and it stuck with me. We call him Cuy for short! You should use it. I will admit, [name]Kyler[/name] would be easier for pronunciation and spelling,we do get questions on both, but like you I didn’t care for the smoosh look of [name]Kyle[/name] and [name]Tyler[/name]. [name]Cuyler[/name] is more handsome!

@libbyj06: [name]Do[/name] you happen to remember what book it was? Maybe if I can get an idea on the character, it might make me like the name even more.

@saracita00: Thanks for the encouragement. In fact, I did think about [name]Coltrane[/name] too, another name it led me to. I just have mixed feelings about it, mostly I am not to fund of it, but at times I can see the appeal.

When I first started looking at names I like, I thought it would be nice and cool to pull a name out of my name. (Basically, using only or majority of the letters I had in my three names)…

C0 urtney [name]Le[/name]— -------ton. If you look at the bold letters, that’s how I came up with the names [name]Cole[/name] & [name]Colton[/name]. But then I thought it was weird to have both first and last name ending in -ton. And [name]Cole[/name] felt incomplete. Also, one of my oldest nieces stated that there were so many [name]Colton[/name]'s in her school alone, that it felt bland.

I have six nieces, that all have unique spelling. Nothing to far out, well maybe one or two, but most just exchanged the ‘i’ for a ‘y’. So I always said my kids would have traditional spelling of the name or the most common version. Usually bugs me otherwise…

I even thought about making the masculine version as close to my older sister names:

Ch@nd@ turns into [name]Chandler[/name]
K!sh@ turns into [name]Ki[/name]’[name]Shawn[/name]
C0urtney turns into [name]Cole[/name]

So it would have been [name]Chandler[/name] [name]Ki[/name]’[name]Shawn[/name] [name]Cole[/name] LastName.
I thought about using [name]Courtland[/name], but I find it can pull off as vain on my end.

But I find so many things wrong with this name now. Lol

I just want a good, strong, and handsome name, I sort of mind popularity, but if I love it, I can look over it. I don’t want him to be 1 out of 3 kids in his classroom with the same name.
