Thoughts?

Latest boys name my husband and I agree on is [name]Race[/name] - what are people’s thoughts?

Well I first thought of cars racing, and then it went to ‘race’ as in the human classification system.

I think it would be a weird name to have, and it does seem a little try hard when there are thousands of names you could choose from.

It makes me think of [name]Robert[/name] [name]Rodriguez[/name] and his children; [name]Rocket[/name], [name]Racer[/name], [name]Rebel[/name], [name]Rogue[/name] and [name]Rhiannon[/name]… I think the little girl got lucky!

Oh the teasing potential with this one.

“Rat [name]Race[/name]” or “Rat face” or “Racist” or “Eraserhead”…

[name]Do[/name] you two have a special connection to the word race? Are you competitive runners? If so, maybe as a middle name? [name]Chase[/name]? [name]Blaze[/name], or [name]Blaise[/name]? [name]Hermes[/name] (like the messenger of the gods with the winged sandals, also known as [name]Mercury[/name].)

I second @emmabobemma’s sentiment. you could add [name]Dash[/name] to that list.

The name [name]Race[/name] is nmsaa. It makes me think of the word race, as in a person’s race. I think [name]Racer[/name] would be better.

It is the sound you like? What about these…

[name]Ace[/name]
[name]Case[/name]
[name]Cason[/name]
[name]Mason[/name]
[name]Jason[/name]
[name]Jace[/name]
[name]Grayson[/name]
[name]Chase[/name]

emmabobemma,
So [name]Race[/name] has teasing potential but [name]Hermes[/name] does not? Makes me think of herpes right away. [name]Race[/name] is much better in my opinion.

I hear what you’re saying Fivebabymen. [name]Hermes[/name] COULD get turned into herpes. Not my first association, but then I’m not 12 years old. There’s such interesting mythology behind the name [name]Hermes[/name]; it is a “real” name, rather than a word that sounds “name-ish.” [name]Dick[/name], [name]Peter[/name], [name]Randy[/name]… real names. [name]Hermia[/name] sounds like hernia but it’s a legitimate name with other wonderful associations. …And you have to admit, Chlamydia really has a nice ring about it. Syphilis for a boy? Or maybe Cyphilus is a more masculine spelling.

Oh, emms, you rock!

I think of horse races and dog races when I hear [name]Race[/name]. I like emma’s suggestions of [name]Blaise[/name], [name]Chase[/name] and especially [name]Hermes[/name].

I don’t think [name]Race[/name] works very well as a name, for many of the reasons mentioned above. It reminds me of those people I read about in the news who named their daughter something like [name]Aryan[/name] [name]Princess[/name]. Ok, so it’s not that bad, but I think it can lead people to the same conclusions whether that is your intention or not.

As for some of the other suggestions, I think christabel’s list is pretty spot on if you want names with similar sounds. It might be easier to suggest names if we knew what attracts you to [name]Race[/name]. I know you didn’t ask for other suggestions, but it could be fun. As for teasing potential, I’m not sure I would go with [name]Hermes[/name], either. The idea is to think like a 12 year old boy when it comes to things like this. [name]Even[/name] if a name is overflowing with history, and every highbrow name scholar in the world thinks it’s just fantastic, it doesn’t mean it works in a modern middle school. What is your kid going to say “You can’t call me Herpes! I have a “real” name!!!”?? Real names are not tease-proof.

I also understand that any name has teasing potential, but why set your kid up for it?

Names I think have a similar feel to [name]Race[/name]:
[name]Shane[/name]
[name]Blaine[/name]
[name]Sage[/name]
[name]Cade[/name]
[name]Chase[/name]

I think race is a bad idea since “[name]Race[/name]'s” sounds like Racist so I can see that being a bad thing when someone wants to say “That’s [name]Race[/name]'s bike/ball” and worse when they just say “Oh that’s [name]Race[/name]'s” because to me it sounds like “Oh that’s racist”

I also see it as an issue since race doesn’t just mean running, it means what you are, like “What’s your race?” “Oh I’m Chinese” [name]Just[/name] not a good idea…

I’ve known a twenty-something year-old named [name]Race[/name] all of his life. Parents have strong ties to auto racing, so it’s significant to them. I don’t recall there ever being any teasing or negative associations with his name. He wears it well. Perhaps it’s more accepted here in [name]Indiana[/name], home of the Indianapolis 500?? I can see where pps are coming from with the association to the human classification system, but to be honest, it never crossed my mind prior to reading this post.

Sorry, but [name]Race[/name] is bad, very bad. My first thought was also the human classification system, as though you’re implying someone’s “race”. That would not stand well in today’s society.

am i the only one who saw [name]Race[/name] and thought “racy” as in black lace thongs? i must have a dirty mind.

Hee hee–loved the “racy” comment. I really want to give you a thumbs up on [name]Race[/name] since I usually think people should go with their gut, but as a retired middle school teacher I can’t. I think it would be a horrible name to have in the hallway. Sure, if he was uber popular and charming he could get away with anything, but he might be shy or average or academically inclined and it just wouldn’t work.

My last name is [name]Young[/name] and my hubby always wanted a son named [name]Brigham[/name] [name]Young[/name]. That name might not mean much if you live outside of [name]Utah[/name], but we live in [name]Utah[/name] so we decided against it. As my hubby said, “If our son is like you he would [name]LOVE[/name] being [name]Brigham[/name] [name]Young[/name], but if he is like me he would hate his name.” I think [name]Race[/name] is the same kind of thing–you can’t predict if he’ll have the personality to like it and pull it off until it is too late.

Yeah I really don’t like it at all

It makes me think of the Olympic fencer, [name]Race[/name] Imboden, which gives it sort of a good feeling for me. Unfortunately, there are a lot of possibly problematic associations that could come up, which have already been mentioned.

Thanks everyone, not really sure what attracted us to it other than my husband being very insistent on a’unique’ name but most of u have voiced my thoughts on it so I think we’ll eep searching thank you!!
