Thoughts?

My husband and I have recently found out we are going to have a baby. While we don’t know the sex yet we are hoping for a baby girl. We’ve decided that we like the name [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]. But I would like some opinions on what you guys think of the name. While its cute for a baby and todler, would it be professional enough for when she’s an adult? Is [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] too different? [name_m]Just[/name_m] asking opinions.

Since you’re specifically asking about the level of professional qualities that the name [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] possesses, I’m going to be frank and say that it has little to no professionalism. If that factor is extremely important in your consideration of naming, I wouldn’t entertain the idea of [name_f]Tesla[/name_f].
Years ago, I would’ve had a different response.
But now, [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] is joined at the hip to an electric car company, whose time in the limelight grows bigger and bigger each day. Instead of appearing that you named your daughter after [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] [name_f]Tesla[/name_f], the most prominent image people will have in their head is “the [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] car”. I’m not sure how okay with that you’d be, but personally it tarnishes the value of a name when it is linked to the corporate world.

[name_f]Tesla[/name_f] does sound nice, but it’s too bad it’s a car brand. I think for that reason alone, I wouldn’t personally consider it. [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] might be a nice, similar alternative, though. I think the nickname [name_f]Tess[/name_f] is adorable

I think [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u] is gorgeous. I can see [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] working on all ages, and I can see her being professional too. [name_u]Rain[/name_u] is a little cutesy and doesn’t work great on an adult, but then it is only a middle name which she may rarely use.

I think if you love it, go for it. I love [name_f]Tesla[/name_f]'s uniqueness, and at the end of the day nprofessionalism is determined by the individual, not the name.

[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: I had no idea it was a car brand…I thought it was a scientist!

My immediate thought was the car brand, which is unfortunate. If the cars are uncommon (or unheard of) in your area, you could probably still use it. I do find it professional, but the car association is powerful.

I also associate it with a car. Could [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u] be an alternative? I think [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u] is gorgeous, [name_f]Tess[/name_f] is cute, and both ([name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and [name_f]Tess[/name_f]) work well for both a child or an adult.

It’s really, really unfortunate that [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] is a car. I can see a [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] dealership from my office window, so it would be like using Honda or Toyota for me. Depending on where you are though, this may not be an issue? I don’t know how popular they are worldwide.

That being said, I do like the sound and the science association. If you think that you can get past the cars, I do think it is a professional name for an adult. I think it’s more professional/grown up than the suggestion of [name_f]Tessa[/name_f].

It is too tied to the car for me as well. I love the suggestion of [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]. [name_u]Rain[/name_u] is too cutesy for me and I prefer a longer middle with a shorter first name.

I think it’s a pretty name but I can’t get past the fact it’s the name of a car company.

Unfortunately I agree. It’s a lovely name but it’s a car company. I also have to agree that [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] is a nice alternative.

Telsa has a lovely sound, and I can get behind naming a child after a scientist (although maybe for a little girl a female scientist would be extra cool, role model-wise?), but unfortunately I do think the car association is one that is only likely to grow over her childhood and adulthood (who knows, maybe they will go out of business, but I think the future is looking bright right now for electric cars), and, personally, I would not use it as a first name because of that. However, I think there’s a lot more leeway with a middle name, so I would suggest:

[name_f]Raina[/name_f] [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] ([name_f]Raina[/name_f] appeals to me more in the first name spot than [name_u]Rain[/name_u], but you could just flip the names)
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]

A little more different, but perhaps also worth considering?
[name_f]Selma[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]

Here are also some alternate suggestions:

[name_f]Tressa[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Nyssa[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Larissa[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Tara[/name_f] (maybe with a different middle?)
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Milena[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Charissa[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]
[name_f]Estella[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]

[name_f]Tesla[/name_f] makes me think immediately of the car brand, I wouldn’t recommend it as a name. [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] is a good alternative if you want something similar.

I love the name [name_f]Tesla[/name_f], and where I live there aren’t very many electric cars around at all, so I don’t associate [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] with the car brand. And [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u] is just gorgeous!

I know a 15 year old named [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] and she wears it really well. It has always suited her, from baby to young adult, and I’m sure it will continue to into adulthood.
No one makes jokes about the car brand to her - people’s responses to her name are almost always “like the scientist? Cool!” … and even when it’s not mentioning [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] [name_f]Tesla[/name_f], they’re always positive
