Sorry I am posting incessantly, but I have shaken up my girls list a bit and I’m so confused now! So:
My top two names are now [name]Adelaide[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] ([name]Addie[/name]) and [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Eve[/name] ([name]Tilly[/name]). My concern is that both relate to Australia (the former being the capital of a state and the latter featuring in a very famous song “Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name]”) and I have no connections to Australia that would make that make sense. Is it a very conspicuous association to the country, or would it take someone a little more erudite to notice? Would it be a big deal to have [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] as sisters even with no ties to Australia?
This is a tad more simple, just pick your favorite: [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] (Prim/[name]Posy[/name]) or [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] ([name]Mimi[/name])? If you’d like to suggest other combinations for either as a first name, please do!
Let’s say we have [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Amelia[/name] as sisters. Are the names too similar or just similar enough for a good sib set? Let’s say we have [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Primrose[/name]. Does [name]Primrose[/name] seem like the odd one out or does she fit in alright?
Thank you so so much! (By the way, I’m not pregnant, TTC, or anywhere close to having kids, I just like collecting names!)
I would have never thought Australia with those names. My first though was how [name]Adelaide[/name] Juilet sounds like it came out of a [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name] book (classy, feminine, and with just the right amount of vintage-ness to it) and how [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Eve[/name] sounds really high class and elegant. I think they would make great sisters!
I think [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] flows better. I think that [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Melanie[/name] or [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] has a great flow to it.
I actually like the [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Primrose[/name] sibset better than the [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Amelia[/name] sibset. I think that [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Primrose[/name] are all underused classics that haven’t hit the popularity meter very hard yet. I think that [name]Amelia[/name] breaks that trend because its really common compared to [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name]. Also, [name]Amelia[/name] another ‘A’ name, and I never thought a sibset looked right with two name starting with the same letter while the other starts with something different. It throws the balance off for me.
1 - Honestly, I think even someone with heavy ties to Australia would miss it. I think they fit together beautifully.
2 - I prefer [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Amelia[/name].
3 - [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Primrose[/name] sounds like a great sibset to me. They’re similar in style but different enough to stand as individuals.
As an Aussie I can’t help but associate [name]Matilda[/name] with Australia. If the sibling as [name]Adelaide[/name], yes it is Aussie in my mind… BUT [name]Adelaide[/name] was named after [name]King[/name] [name]William[/name] the IV’s wife, so it doesn’t have to be Australian. I also like [name]Adel[/name] as a nn for [name]Adelaide[/name].
I like [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name]- both are pretty. Personally I like [name]Primrose[/name] with [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Adelaide[/name] slightly more as otherwise there would be two A names.
emiliaj - living in [name]America[/name], do you think it would be much of a problem unless I were to meet Australian people (who would then proceed to sing “Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name]” to my daughter ;))?
I don’t think this is a bad match at all, I have never associated [name]Matilda[/name] with Australia, If it was [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Sydney[/name] it would be different, but since you’re in USA I don’t think anyone would make too much off an association, and if they did it wouldn’t be bad!
2.[name]Primrose[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] (Prim/[name]Posy[/name]) or [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] ([name]Mimi[/name])? Ooh, I do like them both! I suppose it depends on your last name? Which flows best? They are both so pretty, I love [name]Posy[/name] best out of the nns!
I think all 3 combos are perfect! They flow well and they are all very pretty names by themselves and together!!!
The [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] connection is obvious to me (I’m in US) but it may just be because of my love of names and the Aussie connection of each is brought up individually. I think I would go with it and sort of pretend the link had nothing to do with why you like the names (which, of course, it didn’t). I actually think it would be more weird if you DID have a connection to Australia and that was how you chose to honor it.
Like others, I prefer [name]Primrose[/name] as the third sister because [name]Amelia[/name] is too commonly used and is a bit matchy (starting with A like [name]Adelaide[/name] and ending with A like [name]Matilda[/name], also all have 3 syllables).
I love [name]Adelaide[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] combo by the way, very striking!
I don’t think anyone would notice, or care about the association, personally. I certainly didn’t notice it, and wouldn’t think anything of it even after being told.
[name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name].
They make a good sibset, [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name]. [name]Primrose[/name] does seem a bit out, but not significantly.
If I really thought about it I might recognize the connection, but I doubt I’d think it was purposeful much less think it was weird on the parents part.
AmeliaPrimrose though I like the nn [name]Posy[/name], I’d prefer [name]Lia[/name] or [name]Mel[/name] to [name]Mimi[/name].
I think that’s a great sibset. [name]Primrose[/name] as a first name might be a bit too different, but I think [name]Amelia[/name] works great.
I see your point, but it would have never even occurred to me, in reality. In the UK [name]Matilda[/name] is super popular, so it just seems like another ‘common’ name to me, with no distinctive associations. [name]Adelaide[/name] does make me think of the city, but it’s not a big deal to me.
I honestly love both, but I’d have to say [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] because I dislike [name]Mimi[/name].
I could see any combination of those working fabulously as sisters! You have nothing to worry about. (:
I would never have made the connection until you told me! I live in [name]America[/name]. I never realized [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] were cities/states in Australia.
[name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] is lovely
[name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Amelia[/name] would be a cute sibset
I dont have strong, must-be-Australian connotations w/ either really. I do think Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name], but I also think [name]Roald[/name] Dahl’s [name]Matilda[/name].
[name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] by a mile.
I think [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Amelia[/name] would be just fine as sisters. [name]Primrose[/name] does stick out a little more for me because she doesnt have the A- or the -A…but if those are the names you love, I wouldnt see it as a deal breaker.
[name]One[/name]: I’m from Australia, and surprisingly don’t feel a strong connection between the name [name]Adelaide[/name] and the city [name]Adelaide[/name]. It certainly hasn’t stopped me from putting [name]Adelaide[/name] in my top ten! I used to associate [name]Matilda[/name] with Australia quite strongly, but now seeing as it’s becoming more popular around the world, I think the connection is weakening.
I think [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] would make a gorgeous sibset! Maybe to others, it would be a bit too much, but I certainly don’t think so.
Two: Oh, this is a bit hard to choose…I don’t like [name]Amelia[/name], so I’m leaning towards [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Amelia[/name], but I think [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] flows better…unfortunately I can’t think of any suggestions at the moment however.
Three: I adore [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] as siblings, but I don’t like [name]Amelia[/name] with them, and not just because I don’t like [name]Amelia[/name]. There’s just something about it. [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Primrose[/name] is nice, but [name]Primrose[/name] does seem out of place.
I think most Aussie I know wouldn’t sing it too her- people I know are more polite than that. Any poor uneducated types couldn’t afford to get to the US to sing it to her anyway…! LOL I think if it were my daughter I would teach her the song and if anyone ever sings it tell her to join in! In other words, don’t let it be teasable. An Aussie would likely comment- eg “Wow, Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name] makes me think of Australia” or “Maltilda? Like Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name]!” and smile. To us the song is one of Aussie pride.
