Recently there was a thread with this name on the girls names forum, which resulted in over 1500 suggestions. It just got me to wondering what people would suggest if this request was made for boy’s names rather than girls names.
I’ll start off with a handful that I can think of:
[name]Tyrion[/name]
[name]Zared[/name]
Axis
[name]Draco[/name]
Riddick
[name]Wolfe[/name]
[name]Lorcan[/name]
Lorand
[name]Caspian[/name]
[name]Fitz[/name]
Chade
[name]Merlin[/name]
[name]Aries[/name]
[name]Sherlock[/name]
[name]Mars[/name]
Finnick
[name]Hawthorn[/name]
Vallant
Rion
Tasman
So what ideas do people have for boys names? What others can you add?
[name]Tiger[/name]
[name]Bear[/name]
[name]Tarquin[/name]
[name]Granite[/name]
[name]Burgundy[/name]
[name]Cerulean[/name]
[name]Cobalt[/name]
Corduroy (made this one up. I think it’s really cute with the nickname [name]Roy[/name])
There are weirder ones, but by opening my biggest babyname book at random (please blame them if any of the translations are dodgy) I found:
Like - [name]Burr[/name] (OK, one of my faves!), [name]Caedmon[/name], Dragan, Elfed, [name]Farouk[/name], Icabod, [name]Lundy[/name], Rhun and for entertainment value Nennog, [name]Scipio[/name] and [name]Tancred[/name].
Like not - Amyot, Harshit (‘joyful’ in Sanskrit), [name]Gaylord[/name] (may have fine French origins, but it’s the average 11-yr-old’s biggest insult in UK!), Jaroslav, Kamper, [name]Math[/name] (Welsh for ‘treasure’), Olvidio (‘forgetful one’ in Spanish), Pelex, [name]Quennel[/name], [name]Xylon[/name], [name]Yancy[/name], Zelotes.
peppersprout - love the idea of Diggory, had not thought of that as a name possibility before! [name]Thaddeus[/name] is also a great one.
bob=kate - wow! I don’t think I’d heard of any of them before
dantea - you’re right, I do think that some of the classics such as [name]Ulysses[/name], [name]Odysseus[/name] and [name]Icarus[/name] are great and underused. BUt I understand why as I’m sure sure I’d be brave enough to use them, and guess a lot of other people think the same way. Also love the idea of Zealand and [name]Slade[/name]
dearest - [name]Horizon[/name] is great idea, just a pity it’s a cigarette brand here
cressida - love [name]Moss[/name] and [name]Uriel[/name]. I think I saw [name]Uriel[/name] in one of the [name]Dresden[/name] Files books…
Good to see some dynamic suggestions coming out, often feels like a lot of the most interesting ones are put forward for girls and not so much for boys!
[name]Aloysius[/name] - I’ve never known how to pronounce this. Uh-[name]LOY[/name]-shuss or [name]Al[/name]-oh-WISH-uss?
Sabbath
[name]Salem[/name]
Bane - or Wolfsbane like the herb, which is a GP of mine.
[name]Tynan[/name]
[name]Cobalt[/name]
[name]Saxon[/name]
[name]Godfrey[/name] - a GP of mine for the sound, not the meaning.
Thales - pron. [name]TAL[/name]-ess (short A as in [name]Tally[/name])
[name]Mercer[/name]
[name]Loyal[/name]
Brave
A lot of these have been used by European royals at some point in the past- makes a change from all the [name]Georges[/name] and Fredericks @greyer- I always pronounced [name]Aloysius[/name] as [name]Ah[/name]-lo-wish-us, but I don’t know where I got that from! I’d like to know which way is right
I’m loving this thread! There are plenty of names on here that make me so happy! And I do understand that some of the classics might not come back, but I wish they would!
@greyer – From what I understand (which is from watching Doubt with [name]Meryl[/name] Streep) [name]Aloysius[/name] is pronounced ah-loy-shuss
