My husband and I are on the continuing quest to find a girl’s name we agree on even though we aren’t expecting. Our son’s name is [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Michael[/name]. He is one year old and goes by [name]Elijah[/name] or Boo. Anyway, my hubby looks at me the other night and says how about [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name]? I kind of like it but it also kind of reminds me of [name]Barbra[/name] [name]Jean[/name] off of that [name]Reba[/name] show. I asked if he likes [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] and we could call her [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name] but he thinks it reminds him too much of the movie [name]Matilda[/name]. Thilly is the name of his grandmother grandmother and [name]Jean[/name] is the name of my mom’s mom so I want this to work.
[name]Do[/name] you think TillyJean/[name]Tilly[/name]-[name]Jean[/name]/[name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name] would go well with [name]Elijah[/name]? And do you think the name goes well with [name]Elizabeth[/name] because that part isn’t optional.
I would reverse the order a bit: [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Jean[/name]
seems more balanced this way…
[name]Mathilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] is pretty though…
[name]Mathilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] would work nicely too
[name]Tilly[/name] is a very sweet name (:
I think [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is beautiful! Please go for a full name rather than just [name]Tilly[/name] though. It is adorable on a child, but imagine your child growing up to be a doctor or a lawyer. Dr. [name]Tilly[/name] just sounds very childish.
I immediately hear [name]Billy[/name] [name]Jean[/name], as in the [name]Michael[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] song.
I think [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name] is cute, but cute does not quite make great naming material. [name]Tilly[/name] just sounds more like a nn than a full first name, though I do love it as a nn, and [name]Jean[/name] as the second half of a double barrel first name just sounds dated and sort of fuddy.
I think if you want this to work, you have to definitely use [name]Jean[/name] as a middle name and not part of the first name and you need to make [name]Tilly[/name] short for something that will age better. [name]Matilda[/name] is the obvious choice, and [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Tilly[/name] (or even [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name] among family) is great, but the fact that your husband doesn’t like it sounds like a deal-breaker.
So, I think the question is: what else could [name]Tilly[/name] be short for?
I can’t immediately think of anything else that [name]Tilly[/name] could be short for, but how do you feel about [name]Milly[/name]?
[name]Milly[/name] could be derived from:
[name]Matilda[/name] (but your husband doesn’t like this?)
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Melissa[/name]
[name]Milena[/name]
I agree that [name]Tilly[/name] might be cute as a child, but too babyish when she gets older. I think [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Jean[/name] would be beautiful.
I know someone who goes by [name]Tilly[/name] as a nickname but her real name is [name]Tilden[/name]. I dont know how you feel about that, but I thought I would throw it out there! You could also do [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name], and call her [name]Tilly[/name]. I think [name]Tilly[/name] is cute.
Haha, I didn’t think of [name]Billie[/name] [name]Jean[/name], but now that you mention it, JLM…
I agree that [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] would age a bit better… I don’t think that the [name]Matilda[/name] movie connection is bad at all… [name]Tilly[/name] could possibly work as a nickname for [name]OTTILIE[/name], [name]TULIP[/name], or [name]TULLIA[/name], but I don’t think that they work as well with [name]Elijah[/name]…
Ok. I just don’t think it will happen. [name]Matilda[/name] sounds pretty awful with our last name anyway and [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name] does make me think of [name]Billie[/name] [name]Jean[/name]. Bummer.
[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] nn [name]Tilly[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] you said is non-negotiable, and it is a name that I know several people have as a first name, but they go by their second name or nn instead.
I think [name]Matilda[/name] is lovely, and the nn [name]Tilly[/name] is adorable. I would only do [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Jean[/name] over [name]Tilly[/name] [name]Jean[/name] for flow and sound, because it reminds me too much of [name]Billie[/name] [name]Jean[/name].
And your husband may not realize this, but that movie was based on a great children’s book by [name]Roald[/name] Dahl (who wrote [name]Charlie[/name] and the Chocolate Factory and who is one of my favorite authors), so I would think most people would think of the (much better) book, and not the movie from 15+ years ago. : )
