Still undecided on baby’s name (due in 4 weeks). I’m thinking again about [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]/[name_f]Tillie[/name_f], which we liked during our last pregnancy. [name_f]My[/name_f] 2 yr old daughter’s name is [name_f]Iris[/name_f].
[name_f]My[/name_f] question is - would you spell it [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] or [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]? I’ve always preferred [name_f]Tilly[/name_f], but I wonder if [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] makes more sense (because of [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], etc!).
This would not be a nickname for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - I prefer the nickname as a given name (I know there are strong opinions on that!).
Go with what you have always loved or preferred is my best advice! You might regret it if you don’t. Any name is subject to being made fun of. [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] is great!
I personally prefer [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]. But that may be due to my daughters name [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (Her full name, not a nn).
Go with your gut.
And just a reference there is a child’s book called Silly [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]… It’s about a silly goose, and you will laugh out loud reading it to your kids. [name_f]Promise[/name_f].
[name_f]Tillie[/name_f] for sure! It’s the most intuitive spelling I think. I love nickname names…
[name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], and [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] are my favs.
Good luck choosing!
If you were using it as a nickname, I’d say [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]; as a full name, I vote [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]. As a purely aesthetic matter, I prefer the look of [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]; the letters seem more balanced. I’m not wild about the string that goes: illi; I find it visually jarring.
[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]! [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] is adorable. I prefer a fuller name (I think [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], or [name_m]Tilden[/name_m] could work for [name_f]Tilly[/name_f], too. I feel like [name_m]Tilden[/name_m] seems a bit of an acquired taste, but it’s the name of a township near where I live and I thought it could always work as a name, and I think something like [name_m]Tilden[/name_m] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] or [name_m]Tilden[/name_m] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] “[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]” would be adorable!), and I feel like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] could be a bit mismatched for that reason, but I still think they’re adorable together. I think [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] with a “Y” is fine, just like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] with a “Y” is.
I have a love for nicknames as FNs too [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] is on my list (and I like [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] as well), and it’s gorgeous with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]! I would go for the [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] spelling as it seems to be the most common though (which is what made me choose between it and [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]).
[name_f]Tilly[/name_f] seems more like [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] - a bit simpler and more down-to-earth as full names.
[name_f]Tillie[/name_f] seems more “sweet” - like [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_f]Susie[/name_f], [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] - and really ramps up the nickname factor for me. Other people don’t think [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] etc. seem nickname-ish though so that’s me.
It’s on my list as a nickname possibility, but not for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. Probably for [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] or Tillandsia or something like that.
I prefer [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]. However, although you’re against it, I would choose [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] or some other “formal” name as the first name from which you derive [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]. Your daughter might also appreciate a more formal first name option in the event she finds [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] too informal for certain occasions.
I prefer [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]. I’m not sure why, maybe it is that [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] has too many i’s and l’s. I spell [name_f]Millie[/name_f] with an -ie but [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] with a -y. Honestly, either way you go will be great. I would love to meet sisters named [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]/[name_f]Tillie[/name_f].
Exactly what I was thinking. For some reason [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] seems more like a nickname to me, while [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] is more of a fully name.
Although I usually prefer the -ie ending for similar names ([name_f]Lottie[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] and [name_f]Effie[/name_f] being my favourite), I’ve always preferred this name spelled [name_f]Tilly[/name_f].
