Timeless girls names

I am seaching for a girls name that is enduring and will not sound dated and like it belongs to the year 2012 in the future. (But I don’t want it to sound too tired either.) Something timeless, feminine and not difficult to say or may have a pretty abreviation. I would like to use my mother’s name as a middle name - [name]Mae[/name]. We have a daughter [name]Abigail[/name].

Some current ideas are;

[name]Millicent[/name] ([name]Millie[/name])
[name]Eleanor[/name] ([name]Ellie[/name])
[name]Charlotte[/name] ([name]Lottie[/name])
[name]Sarah[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Katherine[/name]
Sophia (just added)

I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions.

Thanks [name]Lizzy[/name]

[name]Charlotte[/name] is forever timeless, and it’s got that fresh air to it.
[name]Sarah[/name] is bit more…dated.
[name]Alice[/name], [name]Katherine[/name], and [name]Camilla[/name] are fine. [name]Eleanor[/name] is a bit older sounding, but not bad either. [name]Millicent[/name] I can’t really comment on. :frowning:

Because [name]Mae[/name] is so short, and not a very OUT there name, I think a more special first name would be nice.
[name]Millicent[/name] [name]Mae[/name] is nice, you could call her [name]Millie[/name], or M&M, or [name]Mimi[/name].
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Mae[/name] sounds good too.
[name]Camilla[/name] [name]Mae[/name] I like as well.

I love [name]Millie[/name] but think [name]Millie[/name] [name]Mae[/name] is a bit hill-billyish…but i suppose when she says her full name, it will be [name]Millicent[/name] [name]Mae[/name]. I also love [name]Ellie[/name] but would steer away from it personally because of all of the young Lillys and Ellas around these days. [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Mae[/name] and [name]Camilla[/name] [name]Mae[/name] are both lovely. Also, you could use the nn [name]Millie[/name] for [name]Camilla[/name], too! Good luck.

thanks - it’s great to hear your thoughts and have some feedback. somethings I hadn’t thought of!!

[name]Alice[/name] was my first thought. And there it was on your list. [name]Alice[/name] [name]Mae[/name] is very sweet.

[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Mae[/name] is my favorite of your list (though less crazy about [name]Lottie[/name]), followed by [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Mae[/name]. [name]Charlotte[/name] is timeless and works well for a child or a woman, while [name]Eleanor[/name] is also timeless though more sophisticated/older. [name]Ellie[/name] is a cute nickname that would be perfect for a little girl.

Can I just add that I know sisters Natalie and Abigail and I think they combine really well! Tallie is my favorite nn for Natalie.

Millicent (Millie) - is heavily old lady to me, to the extent that it’s back in, it’s in an old-lady-chick way, much more so than Abigail.
Eleanor (Ellie) - I like Eleanor, and it does meet what you’re looking for. Nell/Nellie and Nora are two more nn options.
Charlotte (Lottie) - I love Charlotte and Lottie! Charlotte is a forever wearable name that is “in” right now, it is a little trendy in that respect, much like Abigail. FYI, I’m saying that as praise overall, not as a drawback : D.
Sarah - I agree with a pp that it had a major moment of glory in the 1980s, but it’s not like it’s going out of style horribly. I still like it and think it together with Abigail is nice for being a biblical set. The nn’s Sadie and Sally are great with Abigail (Abby?)
Alice - Alice is a great name that to me is still a little more in the vintage-chic than timeless, though it’s close. I think though you may want to avoid another A name if you’re having more kids? Just a thought.
Camilla - Pretty, but, to me, not exactly timeless. To me, doesn’t pair as well with Abigail as some others.
Katherine - great, definitely classic name that I like with Abigail. Kate, Katie, Kit, Kitty are all cute nn’s.
Sophia (just added) - pretty and timeless in its way, though very in right now. I know this is weirds for name, but, for me, feels much more exotic and sensual than Abigail, which to me is a much more squeaky-clean, All-American name.

Some more suggestions I would love to see with Abigail that I think are in your ball park:
[b]Julia /b
Miriam (Mimi, Mira, Miri - another Biblical name)
Mary (Molly, Mamie, Mae - I think Mae as a middle name would be odd here, but good as a nn for Mary)
Margaret (Maisie, Maggie, Margot, Mae, Mae would work as a middle or a nn - Maggie Mae adorable if you don’t mind the song!)
Violet (Vi, Lettie) - just love this with Abigail! It is a bit “trendier” than the names above, but, is a name with great history so while it’s “in” now it’s not exactly tied to this period in time).
Josephine (Josie)
Lily - quite, quite popular right now, but, so is Abigail! And like Abigail, a solid history of use. I could see nn Millie btw by rhyming if that’s something you really want. Lily Mae = Millie Mae
Madeline - similar feedback to Lily and Violet, Maddie is quite the rage but cute and wonderful I think for Maddie Mae.
Harriet (Hallie, Etta, Ettie) - Harriet is much clunkier and vintage chic than most of these names, more like Alice in that regard, I don’t actually love the name, but if you do - I love several nn’s for it and think it pairs wonderfully with Abigail and Mae.
Phoebe - so cute with Mae, Biblical too.
Olivia - like Sophia, an old, historied name that is particularly popular right now (like Abigail). As with all the names above, I really love two vowel names together. Nns Liv and Livvy are so great - Livvy Mae is great!
Lucy - Lulu or Lula - so cute, sweet, and fresh, sounds natural with Abigail and with Mae to me.
Eve - Biblical and classic, Evie Mae is so sweet. Much simpler than Abigail but I think it works.
Iris - more on the vintage chic side of things, but I like it with Abigail. Similar feel to Alice to me, but you get separate initials.

I’m sure there are more! Which way are you leaning? All best : D!

I love almost all your choices! I love [name]Mae[/name] as a given name as well. My favs are:

[name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]

Thank you for the wonderful feedback. I love your suggestions too Jesba, your reply was very helpful. I will have to add [name]Olivia[/name] to my list (it is also a family name). I really adore [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Eve[/name] too but already have these names in my close friends.

My list is now looking more like;
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] or [name]Ella[/name]
[name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Emily[/name]

I would welcome your thoughts!
[name]Lizzy[/name]

My vote goes to [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name]… Or even [name]Mae[/name] [name]Olivia[/name].

I like how they are both family names for you.

My mother’s name is actually [name]Esmae[/name] and was planning to just use ‘[name]Mae[/name]’ as a middle name, which I think is pretty. I have seen a few variations of [name]Esmae[/name] around recently but was worried it is a little dated?? What do you think??

[name]Catherine[/name] is the most timeless girl name ever.

[name]Charlotte[/name] is very much attached to this generation. [name]Millicent[/name] is fresh but not timeless. [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], and [name]Emily[/name] has a timeless quality but are overused at the moment.

Fresh and timeless (also up and coming) would be [name]Eleanor[/name] and suggestions of [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Vivian[/name].

I might add that [name]Mae[/name] is timeless and fresh for a fn. Good luck.

From your new list I love [name]Catherine[/name] and sophia. I love that [name]Catherine[/name] means pure and sophia means wisdom:). Good luck.

I would say [name]Catherine[/name] is the most “timeless” girl name there is. I love [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Mae[/name], especially since your using the nn [name]Lottie[/name] (I hate little girls being called [name]Charlie[/name]!). I like [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name] since [name]Olivia[/name] is a family name and [name]Olivia[/name] will not ever feel dated. [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] are also good choices for a timeless feeling to the name [name]Millicent[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], and [name]Sophia[/name] do not sound timeless but rather old lady-ish.

[name]Charlotte[/name] - Pretty, nice, historic, but very very “now” - The same way [name]Sarah[/name] is nice/pretty/historic but now you think “'80s” rather than “timeless Biblical name,” people in the future will go “yes, I know [name]Charlotte[/name] technically is historic, but all I hear is the 2010s, yurghh.”

That said, I don’t actually dislike [name]Charlotte[/name] OR [name]Sarah[/name], but if I were feeling very sensitive about them being thought dated I would avoid in favour of [name]Caroline[/name] or [name]Catherine[/name].

[name]Eleanor[/name] or [name]Ella[/name] - [name]Ella[/name]'s quite over-popular here, but it is very cute. I think I would go [name]Eleanor[/name] for longevity. I also like [name]Esther[/name].

[name]Katherine[/name] - [name]Catherine[/name] and [name]Katherine[/name] are both pretty timeless. I also am apparently the only person still living with an affection for [name]Kathleen[/name] but I can only say “it probably won’t date to now because it’s not even in right now.”

[name]Olivia[/name] - See everything I said about [name]Charlotte[/name] plus a little bit more. I think [name]Olivia[/name] is going to date really badly in a decade or so. But if that doesn’t matter to you, rock it, it’s pretty. [name]Opal[/name] or [name]Octavia[/name] which have had less spotlight time probably won’t date as badly, though.

[name]Sophia[/name] - I used to really love this but the way it shot to popularity from relative obscurity makes me wonder how long before its “soooo '00s.”

[name]Emily[/name] - I love it. It is VERY popular though. I might try for [name]Emmeline[/name] if I was concerned about there being six in her class.

Timeless to me is names that are neither rare nor very popular, but ones you can’t tell without listening if it’s the mother, daughter, or grandmother, and its equally believable as all of them: [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Jane[/name]. I don’t believe [name]Sophia[/name] or [name]Olivia[/name] will survive to that level because while they’re definitely historic, they skipped several generations in popular use and are now “back” - [name]Elizabeth[/name], etc. never left.

I think [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name] sounds pretty. [name]Charlotte[/name] is pretty but is super popular at the moment. [name]Camilla[/name] [name]Mae[/name] is also a winner for me. What do you think of sienna or [name]Eva[/name]?

Have you considered [name]Meredith[/name]? It is not popular at all, but TO ME it feels timeless. [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Esmae[/name] would be nice! I like the nn [name]Edie[/name].

[name]Caroline[/name] [name]Mae[/name] would also be nice!

I also like [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Mae[/name].

Good luck1
