I’m currently in labor with our first baby. We’ve settled on some variation of the name [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] with both [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Ann[/name_f] representing honor names from different sides of the families.
That being said we’d love to hear about the logistics of hyphenation in the U.S. If it’s hyphenated would her middle initial just be “M” or would [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Ann[/name_f] be treated as two separate names on legal docs? Any insight anyone has would be great.
We’re also tossing around the possibility of using [name_f]Maryann[/name_f] or [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f].
I’d use [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], since I think it looks classier and would be easier to spell than [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] or [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I think all of these versions are usable.
The whole “what would the initial be if we hyphenated” thing is something that always throws me, too. My [name_m]SIL[/name_m] has a hyphenated first name and she always lists her first initial as “L”, from her first first name. I don’t know if there is an official way to do this?
I do like the look of [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f], but I think that [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f] or [name_f]Maryann[/name_f] would be easier.
I much prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] over [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f] or [name_f]Maryann[/name_f]. For me it has a sweet old-fashioned quality whereas [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f] and [name_f]Maryann[/name_f] type mishmashes just look odd to me. I assume that [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f]'s initials would be S.M.
My understanding is that the hyphen makes two words into one so just the first initial ‘M’ for [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] is counted.
I also love the option of [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], but that is pronounced differently - [name_f]Marry[/name_f] like carry.
Either [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] or [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is just gorgeous [name_f]IMO[/name_f]!
I think [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] looks best and I think the initials would be S.M. If you go with [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f], her second middle may be dropped from certain forms so she’d be [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. And [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f] or [name_f]Maryann[/name_f] look smooshed and awkward to me, but that’s just my opinion.
I think we’re leaning towards [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] as I’m not really a fan of the smooshed look of [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f] or [name_f]Maryann[/name_f] and given that the whole purpose of using the name is to include both honor names neither of us really like the idea of changing both names in order to use [name_f]Marianne[/name_f].
Hopefully if it’s in the middle, the hyphenated name won’t cause too many logistical problems.
I don’t think you be changing the names to make [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], they sound exactly the same, both names are still included and is honoring both of them still, just a small change in spelling, I think it looks much prettier than [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f].
The hyphen will cause problems. I have a hyphenated last name and a lot of computer programs (credit card companies, medical facilities, etc…) don’t accept the hyphen and they just run the names together. I actually think that [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is the prettiest.
I’d use [name_f]MaryAnn[/name_f]. My sister has a friend named [name_f]SuEllen[/name_f] and I thought this was so creative.
I have a friend named [name_f]AnnMarie[/name_f], so I suppose AnnMary or AnneMary would work too.
In labor and online, good for you! LOL
