As long as you change it before he goes to school, I think it would be a fine idea.
I love, love, love [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]. I think having a longer name does open up a kid to more options as they grow older.
I love [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] but I’d say that 3 years in, his name’s [name_u]Toby[/name_u]. It’s a lovely name and I know several professional adults who are “just” [name_u]Toby[/name_u] — it absolutely stands alone as a perfectly handsome and respectable name.
I love [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] but if he’s always been [name_u]Toby[/name_u], I would just leave it. He’d probably still get called just [name_u]Toby[/name_u] which is equally as lovely and charming (one of my faves actually!)
I really like the idea of changing it, because in my opinion he would benefit to have a more formal name as an adult. [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] can still be shotend to [name_u]Toby[/name_u], so nothing has to change If you already call him [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], i see no problem with it! [name_m]Just[/name_m] change it before he goes to school!
Good luck
I much prefer [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] to [name_u]Toby[/name_u]
Definitely change it to [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], which is sophisticated and classic. [name_u]Toby[/name_u] is okay for a nn, but as a first name, it is babyish for an adult male.
Thanks so much to all of you! Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply!
I think we will change it, if only to give him a more formal name of ever he wants one, at least that way he has a choice
