[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,
We love the name [name_u]Toby[/name_u] but wonder should we use [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] or [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] so he has the option when he’s older? Our surname ends in ON so not sure if [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] works.
Thoughts? [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!!
I love [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u]! It has been in my top 5 for over a year now. I think [name_u]Toby[/name_u] on its own can work, but I think it is better to have a formal option for him to use when he is older. I like [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] too, but not nearly as much as [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], and I think [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] will work better with your last name. But if you don’t like either of the full names, [name_u]Toby[/name_u] does work on its own, even though it is a bit nicknamey.
Really don’t get the attraction of this one. [name_m]Tobin[/name_m]/[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] aren’t horrendous, but [name_u]Toby[/name_u]? It’s just so unpleasant (toes, feet…ick). And I’d feel sorry for an adult w/the name. There are so many better options…[name_f]Taryn[/name_f], [name_m]Antony[/name_m], [name_u]Tristan[/name_u], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], [name_m]Tad[/name_m], [name_m]Tibalt[/name_m], [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]…really anything is better. Sorry if I’ve offended, but my distaste is quite strong–it’s the first name I shuddered to hear as a child, and I just get a major ‘ick’ feeling when I hear it. Maybe I’m the only one.
I love [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], know a little [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] who calls himself Bias very cute.
I would personally go for [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]. I think [name_u]Toby[/name_u] is fine for a boy or even a teenager, but it would be nice for him to have a full name to fall back on as he moves into his adult life. I like [name_m]Tobin[/name_m], but [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] definitely flows better with your last name.
[name_m]Tobin[/name_m] with your last name would be odd. [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] is one of my favorites. I’d use [name_u]Toby[/name_u] for a nn, not for the full given name.No reason why you couldn’t use [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] as the nn for [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].
I think [name_u]Toby[/name_u] is cute… for a Nickname or Middle. I would go for [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and then call him [name_u]Toby[/name_u].
I love [name_u]Toby[/name_u]! I personally prefer [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] as the full form–something about [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m] don’t sit right with me–but [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] seems like it’d go better with your surname. [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] sounds better than [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] [name_u]Hudson[/name_u], for example, or even [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] [name_m]Charleston[/name_m] as opposed to to [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] [name_m]Charleston[/name_m], but [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] [name_u]Hudson[/name_u]/[name_m]Tobin[/name_m] [name_m]Charleston[/name_m] don’t sound bad, and I think if you like [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] better, there’s no reason not to use it. I think just [name_u]Toby[/name_u] is cute, but I like the variety of options with [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u], personally. There’s also [name_m]Ben[/name_m] as a nn, or even [name_u]Tony[/name_u], if he doesn’t like [name_u]Toby[/name_u].
Good luck!
I love [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u]! [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] gets my vote
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] gets my vote. I like [name_u]Toby[/name_u] but only as a NN, and [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] doesn’t seem to work with your surname.
I don’t mind [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m] either.
I like [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] better. Someone pointed out to me that [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] looks like the words “to bias” smushed together and I can never un-see this.
As far as flow, my first name ends in -in and my last name ends in -on, and I get many compliments and have always liked my name. To make it worse they start with the same letter and, here’s the kicker, I have a 2-2-2 syllable flow. But it works, and I love my name. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let the prescribed “rules” stop you if you prefer one name over another. Unless it’s, you know, offensive or embarrassing for the child but I don’t think [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] “[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]” fits that category.
[name_u]Toby[/name_u] is fine on its own. It’s a proper English stand alone name, like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_m]Henry[/name_m].
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] would be my favourite form of the name, although I find the English pronunciation rather harsh — [to-[name_f]BEE[/name_f]-as] is much nicer.
I dated a [name_u]Toby[/name_u] who was just [name_u]Toby[/name_u], and he was fine. His name didn’t seem odd or out-of-place. But still, I think it’s quite nicknamey on its own. It’s like the guy who’s called [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] his whole life. [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] is a handsome name, and it would give a boy called [name_u]Toby[/name_u] something formal to fall back on.
I also vote for [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] with nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u]. It’s a wonderful name, and the long form is so handsome. I love nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u] as well. Nice choice!
I prefer [name_u]Toby[/name_u] as a nn for [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] or [name_m]Tobin[/name_m]. Anything ending in “ee” is a bit cutesy for an adult. Not that many don’t continue to use such names as adults, but it’s nice to have the option in case he wants something more professional sounding as well. If [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] doesn’t work with your last name, I would go with [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u].
I adore this name! So glad to see it talked about <3 !!
I fell in love with Tobias as a young teen, so it’s a long-term love of mine, but when talking it over with my husband, we realized we might like Tobiah more. I’m debating now, but nevertheless, Toby is awesome! And although, it is a line of drink products, I’ve also heard (the name) Sobe in use too (to give you even more variation).
Tobin isn’t bad, but Tobias is the more classic name; depends on what you’re going for. Personally, I would use a full name and let your son decide how to let the name grow with him.
I much prefer [name_u]Toby[/name_u] as a stand alone name. To me, [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] sounds too… fancy? Pretentious perhaps. I’ve always liked [name_u]Toby[/name_u] as a name, although it’s not one that I’d use personally.
Thanks for the input all! Our surname is Rushton … [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] Rushton ?
[name_m]Tobin[/name_m] is probably becoming my favourite extended version of [name_u]Toby[/name_u]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it could work?
I also like [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] the best. I know an adult named [name_m]Bas[/name_m] (pronounced Bass-popular o/seas name) so he could always shorten it to that if he’s not keen on [name_u]Toby[/name_u] when older
