My husband and I have been talking a lot about names recently. We are definitely going to use [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] if we have a boy because it honors his family but we both also love the name [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] for a girl. If we have a girl first but have a boy later, we’d still want to use [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]…but if we have all girls, I might be sad I never used the name [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. What do you think?
On a totally different and less important note…I love nicknames and very much want to call each of our kids by one. For [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], he’d probably go by [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] all of the time, unless we called him Rupe conversationally…but what about [name_u]Rex[/name_u]? It’s normally a nn for [name_m]Reginald[/name_m], but [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] has the requisite “r” and “e”… I suppose it would depend on if it fit him. Suppose you met a [name_u]Rex[/name_u] and you were surprised to find how well it fit him…and then you found out his full name was [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]–would you love it or hate it?
And on the topic of nn’s, what is your favorite for [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]? [name_f]Pru[/name_f]? [name_f]Prudy[/name_f]? [name_u]Denny[/name_u]? something else? Mine is probably [name_f]Pru[/name_f]…but then Rupe…that’s why I worry the names are too similar for siblings.
Sorry this is so stream-of-thought. I hope you can follow it and I would really appreciate some outsider perspective. Thanks!
First of all, let me tell you, I absolutely love [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m].
I think it would work really well as a sibset! They have the “ru” sound in common, but it isn’t too noticeable and I actually think it gives them something in common in the sense that it makes them really belong together.
Rupe as a nn for [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is delicious. As to [name_u]Rex[/name_u]… He could probably pull it off, but I don’t love it. I would definitely find it odd. I also still associate this nn to [name_u]Rex[/name_u], the police dog from the tv show “Inspector [name_u]Rex[/name_u]”.
[name_f]Prudy[/name_f] is my favorite nn for [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. It’s just adorable. Rupe and [name_f]Prudy[/name_f] sounds quite nice!
I should probably add that the Inspector [name_u]Rex[/name_u] reference problem will probably only actually be a problem in Europe. I don’t even know why I mentioned it, since most people here are American. Sorry about that!
Thanks for your response!! I like that you think the names “belong” together…would it change your mind if I told you we plan to have 3 children? So Rupe and [name_f]Pru[/name_f] would go together but would the third feel left out in some way or just look odd with the others? Our other two favorites at the moment are [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]…would any of those names combined in a sib-sets work well together?
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] are a little matchy with the Ru and [name_f]Pru[/name_f] beginnings but I don’t think that’s a deal-breaker. They sound different enough so they would be fine. Now, if you add [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] to your sibset, all of the children would share a “u”. [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] have a British vibe to them. [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] would be the oddity but who says you have to continue any pattern for future children. The most important thing is that you [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the names.
Thanks! We do love those names. Does it make a difference that [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] are our first choices? So if we had GGB, it would be [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], but if we had GBB it would be [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] but it would most likely not be [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]? I ask because you brought up the “u” thing… obviously, our name preferences could change over the years and our plan for children could change but I feel the need to try to figure out if these names can stay on our short list because we aren’t going to get any feedback from friends or family when the time comes… Thanks again–sorry if I’m annoying. Hahaha
GGB - [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
GBB - [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
I think they’re all fine together. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have a mn picked out for [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]? You could always use [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] if you still like the name when you eventually have children. That way, [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] can’t say she’s the odd one with no “u”.
Great names! I have heard much matchier sibsets than [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. As long as you’re not going to call them Ru and [name_f]Pru[/name_f]. Now that would be too matchy! As for nicknames, I do like Rupe and [name_f]Pru[/name_f] the best. I agree that [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] doesn’t need to be shortened. [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] might like to have her name shortened though, due to the prude part.
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] are also very cool names. They all sound beautiful together. I don’t think that [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] or [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] would even notice that one of the doesn’t have a U in their name.
I really find it funny you chose [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] & [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]! I’m [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and my girlfriend & I chose the name [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] if we ever get a boy. I think all the names works great together and you shouldn’t be worried.
I agree with @misha that while [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] would be just fine with [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and give it a British theme, [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] might feel different. But I wouldn’t say they don’t go well together. Actually, since none of your names is very mainstream I think that any combination would be great. By which I mean, it would be much weirder to name your children [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f].
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] & [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]- perfect, very poetic.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] & [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]- the soft “r” sound ties these names together very well. [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are classics but still off-beat and quite hipster (in the intellectual, down to earth good sense), while [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] sounds and has classical roots but, like her brothers, it isn’t often heard. Again, thematically they make me think of a whimsical [name_u]London[/name_u] atmosphere.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] & [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]- the differences between [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] are substantial, but, just like @misha said, who says there must be a pattern? If it feels right to you and your family, then it is right.
I also like the suggestion of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], but I am really keen on [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. Again, classical but with an off-beat edge.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], & [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] or any combination therein make a lovely sibling set! If you went with [name_f]Laura[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], they could all have a U.
I haven’t seen this nn for [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], but I really like [name_u]Rudy[/name_u].
I think they are very close in sound. I wouldn’t use it personally, but in saying that, [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] is not my style. I love the nickname [name_u]Rue[/name_u] for a girl and you could use that for [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] but in this instance it would sound like a nickname for [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] (which I think is stunning).
