I am working on a name for my second daughter, due in [name]May[/name].
I would love to honor my late grandmother, whose name was [name]Margaret[/name]. [name]Margaret[/name] is also the middle name of my great-grandmother and an aunt. I love the name and considered it with my first daughter, but we ended up using [name]Molly[/name] [name]Blythe[/name].
I am afraid [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] are too matchy. Thoughts?
Other names we are considering:
[name]Liv[/name] (I love this name but worry it is not substantial enough. I don’t care for [name]Olivia[/name] or [name]Livia[/name])
[name]Caroline[/name] (my husband’s favorite, I am lukewarm about it)
[name]Georgia[/name] ([name]Love[/name], though we live in [name]Tennessee[/name] and am afraid the football rivalry and proximity to the state of [name]Georgia[/name] may cause some teasing)
I think [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] sound cute together! The only similarity is that they both start with M, but lots of people name their children with the same first initial. I saw a family on tv who had two boys named [name]Isaac[/name] and [name]Isaiah[/name], now that is matchy-matchy to me, but [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] sound great!
[name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Molly[/name] are cute together! But I still like [name]Molly[/name] honors your grandmother since they both start with an M. But I’m lenient about that kinda stuff. I like [name]Caroline[/name] best for you but [name]Georgia[/name] is really spunky too!
Well, other than starting with the same letter, they’re not too very similar, but they are a little bit matchy. For me, it depends if you are going to give [name]Margaret[/name] a nickname and how similar that is to [name]Molly[/name]. [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Maggie[/name], for instance, would be too close together [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Margaret[/name] is kind of long and likely to get shortened, so you would have to enforce a nickname like [name]Meg[/name] or [name]Daisy[/name] (I love [name]Daisy[/name]! It’s super adorable). [name]Do[/name] you have any middle names in mind? I’m not sure any of your other names go with [name]Margaret[/name], though [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Livia[/name] sounds good but I know you don’t like it. If you decide to go with one of your other names, here are my thoughts:
[name]Liv[/name] - I know you don’t like [name]Olivia[/name] or [name]Livia[/name], but [name]Liv[/name] doesn’t really feel “full” enough to me - though [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Liv[/name] does sound cute! What about [name]Livana[/name] instead?
[name]Caroline[/name] - I’m also lukewarm about it. I much prefer [name]Margaret[/name].
[name]Georgia[/name] - I don’t think she would get teased. I like this one a lot! You could always use [name]Margaret[/name] in the middle here, but I’m not sure about the flow of [name]Georgia[/name] [name]Margaret[/name].
I think you should definitely try to honor your grandmother somewhere in the name; if you decide [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] are too similar, there are SO many other forms you could use. You could use [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Pearl[/name] ([name]Margaret[/name] means pearl), [name]Marguerite[/name], [name]Megan[/name], [name]Meg[/name], [name]May[/name], etc. either in the middle or first spot. You have lots of great options here; good luck making your decision!
Yes, that’s my concern with it, too. [name]Molly[/name] is usually used as a nickname for [name]Mary[/name], but it’s not totally unheard of to use it for [name]Margaret[/name]. The famous “Unsinkable [name]Molly[/name] [name]Brown[/name]” was actually [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Brown[/name].
What about using [name]Pearl[/name] or [name]Daisy[/name] instead to honor your grandmother? I think they go better with sister [name]Molly[/name] anyway.
I much prefer [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name] or [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Daisy[/name]. [name]Margaret[/name] is a fantastic name, but it seems a little too serious next to fun and fiesty [name]Molly[/name].
I don’t think [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Molly[/name] are too close for sisters, since I think of [name]Molly[/name] primarily as a [name]Mary[/name]-related name (though I agree that maybe trying to avoid [name]Maggie[/name] and [name]Maisie[/name] as nicknames would be sensible). [name]Daisy[/name] and [name]Greta[/name] would be good options if you want a non-m nickname. [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Meg[/name] would be cute, in a storybook way, but since they’re both sensible, substantial names on their own, it doesn’t become twee. Granted, if you were to have a third daughter, I’d avoid M-names ([name]Molly[/name] and [name]Meg[/name]? Yes. [name]Molly[/name], [name]Meg[/name], and [name]May[/name]? Definitely gone a bit to the twee side).
Having said all that, if [name]Pearl[/name] appeals to you, I think it would be and excellent option! There are so many other versions which you could use as nicknames or as her full name- apart from [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Greta[/name], and [name]Pearl[/name], there’s also [name]Rita[/name], [name]Margot[/name], [name]Mared[/name], [name]Metta[/name]…so many great options!
Also, I really love [name]Molly[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]
While I don’t think [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] themselves are too close. [name]Molly[/name] has been used as a nick name for [name]Margaret[/name] and that would bother me,if it doesn’t bother you then I think it’s fine, though I would suggest avoiding [name]Maggie[/name]/[name]Maisie[/name] nn. I like the suggestions of [name]Greta[/name] and then maybe [name]Daisy[/name].
I think [name]Georgia[/name] is a great name! And I don’t think your proximity to the state would cause any teasing. This one is my personally favorite from your list, I think it’s lush and beautiful, and would work great on a little girl ad grown woman.
[name]Molly[/name] and [name]Liv[/name] are cute but I agree [name]Liv[/name] seems insubstantial some other ways you could get the nn [name]Liv[/name]… [name]Olivine[/name], Olivienne, [name]Olivette[/name], Olivera, Olivie,
I love [name]Margaret[/name]! And I think it is sweet with [name]Molly[/name]. I am interested to hear if you plan on shortening [name]Margaret[/name] and, if so, what your preferred nn would be? I actually know sisters [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Maggie[/name] but think [name]Margaret[/name] has other great nn options like [name]Meg[/name], [name]Greta[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name] as mentioned. I also think that [name]Molly[/name] really stands alone these days and don’t hear of people using it as a nn for [name]Margaret[/name] like in the past.
