It bothers me when parents choose names that are too close, in either sound or origin, for multiple children. This week I met sisters named [name]Olivia[/name] and [name]Lily[/name]. I didn’t particularly care for that combination for some reason, maybe because of the slightly similar sounds within the names. But then I heard that they had a younger sister named [name]Lilah[/name]. I can’t imagine naming sisters [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Lilah[/name]. And when you add [name]Olivia[/name] to the mix, the group is just too close for my liking.
Which sibsets have you encountered that you consider too close?
I don’t mind sibsets with the same origin or meaning (like [name]Carys[/name] and [name]Lloyd[/name], or [name]Lior[/name] and [name]Kiran[/name]), or even some starting with the same initial ([name]Olivia[/name] and [name]Owen[/name] or [name]Fiorella[/name] and [name]Finn[/name]). I’m also fine with most sibsets where both are the same name, like [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Isabel[/name], [name]Greta[/name] and [name]Maisie[/name] or [name]Caitlin[/name] and [name]Kaja[/name].
But some names are just silly. [name]Madison[/name] and [name]Mason[/name] were the top names for B/G twins in 2011, and several other pairs were bestowed [name]Isaiah[/name] and [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Ella[/name], [name]Heaven[/name] and [name]Nevaeh[/name], [name]Taylor[/name] and [name]Tyler[/name], [name]Isaac[/name] and [name]Isaiah[/name] and even [name]Ayden[/name] and [name]Jayden[/name]!
Personally, I know a [name]Mabel[/name] and a [name]Mason[/name]- which is way to close [name]IMO[/name]. I also know a sibset of [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Grace[/name] and [name]Ellen[/name], and while all are great names, [name]Evelyn[/name] and [name]Ellen[/name] are too close for sisters.
[name]Emma[/name] and [name]Ella[/name], [name]Mackenzie[/name] and [name]Mackenna[/name], [name]Kensington[/name] and [name]Remington[/name], [name]Isabella[/name] and [name]Gabriella[/name], [name]Persephone[/name] and [name]Seraphina[/name], [name]Joyce[/name] and [name]Jason[/name]… I know twins [name]Valeria[/name] and [name]Angelina[/name] nn Lerie and [name]Lina[/name]. I think they are very close, don’t know if too much though.
Same origin is not a problem for me. It’s a bigger issue when they sound too similar. Like on Teen Mom there are twins named Aliannah (nn [name]Ali[/name]) and [name]Aleah[/name], and their mom’s name is [name]Leah[/name]. puke
I know a set of twins in real life named [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Emily[/name]. No, just no.
I just feel like the possibilities with names are endless (especially for girls) and parents get way too cutesy sometimes by giving their kids rhyme-y names instead of getting more creative with individual style.
