Too cute?

I still love the names in my signature - but I’ve seen a lot of comments calling them cutesy and/or overused. I feel like I’m second guessing my favourites list. What do you think of them?

[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] (don’t like [name_f]Grace[/name_f])
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] (not liking [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] as much)
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]

Thank you - if you have any favourites off the list, please share them

I like them all, but my favorites are [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_f]Posy[/name_f].

My personal favorites are -

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (although I am not sure I could use it as a first name, maybe just a nickname)
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] (I love both [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Gracie[/name_f])
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] (I love [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as a nickname)
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]

Yes, they are cute names. Yes, they may be quite popular. But don’t second guess your favourites. They are your favourites, not anyone else’s. You are allowed to like what ever names you please. I am constantly second guess my favourites, but then I have to remind myself that they are my favourites, and they belong to me.

The names I love off your list:
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f]
[name_f]Posy[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]

And [name_f]Olive[/name_f], in your signature

Have you heard of the blogger, [name_f]Katie[/name_f] or Skunkboy Creatures? She has a little girl called [name_f]Poesy[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], which is a gorgeous name.

I know a [name_f]Gracie[/name_f], and she wouldn’t really suit [name_f]Grace[/name_f] as much as she does with [name_f]Gracie[/name_f].

Some of these do seem too cute to me, although I do like most of them. They just wouldn’t all age well without a more formal form…

[name_f]Millie[/name_f] – needs long form ([name_f]Camille[/name_f], [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f])
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] – needs long form, or just [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] – borderline, but I think it stands on its own
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] – stands on its own
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] – too cute
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] – stands on its own
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f] – stands on its own
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] – definitely stands on its own, nothing cutesy about this one
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] – definitely stands on its own
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] – too cute, prefer [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] – I want this one to stand on its own, but I don’t think it quite does
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] – trendy, but stands on its own
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] – definitely stands on its own
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] – stands on its own
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] – trendy, but stands on its own
[name_f]Holly[/name_f] – stands on its own
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] – stands on its own, although I prefer [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] (don’t like [name_f]Grace[/name_f]) – too cute
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] – too cute
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] – definitely stands on its own
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f] – a bit dated for me, but stands on its own
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] – love it, but too cute without formal name
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] (not liking [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] as much) – too cute
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] – borderline for me, but I think it stands on its own
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] – stands on its own

If you don’t want to use longer/formal names for any of these, my favorites are [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

Everyone has their opinions about names, but these are YOUR favorites. The characters/kids/pets you give these names to are yours, no one else’s. [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] are my favorites from your list  So what if they’re cute-sie? Cute names, are, well, cute! It’s better than not cute right?

I think that’s exactly what I needed to hear, thank you  I don’t like most of the long forms of the names on my list as much as I do the nicknames.

That’s very true

Many of them are traditionally used as nicknames, but I don’t think that necessarily means they’re “cutesy” or can’t stand alone.

I think all of these can stand alone as full names:
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (I prefer this to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], anyway.)
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] (I prefer [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], but I know a woman named [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] as her full name and she wears it fine.)
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (I prefer this as a nickname or on a pet, but plenty of other botanical names are used, so why not?)
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] (One of my favorites.)
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] (Another favorite.)
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] (Another favorite.)
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] (Common, but classic. I like it despite it’s popularity.)
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f] (This is rather dated, though.)
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (I prefer this to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].)
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] (I prefer this to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].)

These I think need full names:
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] ([name_f]Love[/name_f] it as a nickname. Maybe [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] (I think this needs to be [name_f]Rose[/name_f].)
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (This is cutesy.)
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] (Less substantial than [name_f]Grace[/name_f].)
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] (My favorite nickname for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], but just a nickname.)
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] (This is cutesy.)

As I said in another thread of yours, cute is a perfectly find quality in a name. What gets to me about most nickname type names is that I can’t picture them on someone older than say, 10, and people are adults so much longer than kids.

[name_f]Millie[/name_f] – [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like it but prefer it as a nickname for any number of names
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] – Prefer it as a nickname to [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] – prefer it as a nn for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] or Sophrona
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] – I don’t like it but it’s perfectly fine
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] – This is just a me thing (because of my criminal justice background) but it makes me think of opium >.>
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] – I find this insubstantial but not too cute
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f] – Not cute or kiddish
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] – Not cute or kiddish
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] – A perfectly fine name. I don’t think it’s too cute at all. It’s a grown up name to me
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] – This is all nickname to me
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] – This one is really childish to me, but it’s perfectly usable
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] – I don’t like it, but it’s not too cute or kiddish
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] – Definitely not cute. Strong and powerful and beautiful
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] – I don’t find this cute or kiddish
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] – I don’t find this cute or kiddish
[name_f]Holly[/name_f] – Another perfectly usable and legit name
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] – A perfectly fine and legit flower name
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] – I’ve heard so many complaints from a little [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] (8) that she hates how childish her name is and that she wants a grown up name. There are more names than [name_f]Grace[/name_f] to get [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] as a nickname – [name_f]Graciana[/name_f], [name_f]Graciela[/name_f], Gracilia
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] – This one is too kiddish. I like it as a nickname
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] – Very classic and usable on any age
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f] – [name_f]Love[/name_f] it. It’s my preferred spelling of [name_f]Amy[/name_f].
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] – This makes me think of a maze and I do think it’s too kiddish
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] – This makes me think of a sentence “That picture is way to posey”
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] – Isn’t this a legit [name_m]French[/name_m] name pronounced a-may-lee?
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] – [name_f]Love[/name_f] it as a nickname for [name_f]Sylvana[/name_f] or the like

I agree with this.

one - give your kid a full name - that way if the cutesy wears off as they get older they have a more ‘mature’ name to take on if they choose

heres my suggestions:
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] - Milerna, also currently loving Melfina
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - Rosavine, [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - overused, skip it
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] - see below
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - celebrity, skip
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] - overused, skip it
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f] - just ok
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - prefer [name_f]Georgianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] -overused, skip it
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - if [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is too classic, try [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], [name_f]Lisbeth[/name_f], or sweeten it up with a -betta ending

    • also could try [name_f]Elise[/name_f], which [name_f]Liesel[/name_f] is a variation of. a ‘dressed up version’ is suggested for [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - just okay, not a fan of flower names
      [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] - not bad
      [name_f]Freya[/name_f] - frosty, go with [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Fawn[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - seems too popular for me, try [name_f]Vionnet[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] - not bad, but think a lot of [name_f]Isla[/name_f]'s will look back in 20 years and realize they were named after [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_m]Fisher[/name_m]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f] - love, simple - not cutesy or nn
      [name_f]Lily[/name_f] - just okay
      [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] - try [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] or [name_f]Charity[/name_f]
      [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] - Lieslotte
      [name_f]Emma[/name_f] - overused, skip it
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f] - spell correctly to prevent having to spell it out every time she meets someone
      [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] - trendy, skip
      [name_f]Posy[/name_f] - pocket full of posies…skip
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] - use this to get your [name_f]Mia[/name_f] nn
      [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - use [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]

i agree that sometimes you must go with your gut…

however my only problem with this is that sometimes parents forget they are naming a PERSONthat will have to grow up…
remember that this name will be used in three important ways:
[b]

  1. at school by peers
  2. at work by a boss or promoter
  3. by their future partner in a romantic setting[/b]

they arent ‘just yours’…they have to live with the name you give them forever and have it be used by the entire world.

Amélie is one of my favourite names  I think all the names on your list are cute and sweet - no need for the long form if that’s what you like.

I also agree with [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]. They are your favorites and none of them are damaging in anyway. You know how many people on here told me that no one would like [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and why would I want to name my kid after a goddess of the underworld and that no one would know how to say it? TONS! You know how many people hate her name? 1 (my grandma who also hates names like [name_m]Roland[/name_m]). You know how many people have said it wrong? Like 3 (all over 50). After she was born, everyone on here couldn’t tell me enough how amazing and beautiful her name was. -_-

Take everything people say on here with a grain of salt. None of these are damaging or will hurt her. Some of them are kiddish or cute, but there’s nothing wrong with cute. Kiddish, I can see that that could be a problem. I use longer names just so that if [name_f]Millie[/name_f] grows up and hates being [name_f]Millie[/name_f], she has options. If I name her [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], she can be [name_f]Millie[/name_f] if she wants, but she could also be [name_f]Amy[/name_f]/[name_f]Mia[/name_f]/[name_f]Lia[/name_f]/[name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_u]Mel[/name_u] if she’s a tomboy. The same with say, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. I’m going to have a [name_f]Sylvana[/name_f] one day. I’ll call her [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] sometimes. She might grow up and hate how cute [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is an decide to be [name_f]Lana[/name_f] (more grown up and mature sounding), [name_f]Vana[/name_f] (more sexy and sweet), [name_f]Yana[/name_f] (exotic and sexy), etc. For [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], I might name her Philotea (means “she who loves god”) or Lothiriel (flower maiden). She could be [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] or she could be [name_f]Tea[/name_f]/[name_f]Lea[/name_f]/Phea/[name_f]Loa[/name_f]/[name_f]Lota[/name_f]/Phio/[name_u]Phil[/name_u]…and so on. She gets options for the girl she will grow into rather than the girl I think she should be.

But ultimately, it’s your daughter, none of these names will damage or harm her, and it’s ultimately your future choice.

This is the [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling. It’s perfectly correct.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m an adult with a “cute” name. I know some cute-named adults who love their name and some don’t. I have two brothers with classic biblical names, and a sister with one of the very standard classic female names, and they all exclusively answer to NNs. My brothers even use them in their bylines. Meanwhile, I have a nickname-name and want a formal name. There’s just no knowing until a child grows up a bit! So you may as well use what you love, absent glaring drawbacks.

FWIW, I really like a lot of the names you listed! A lot of times “cute” also reads as “spunky” or “spirited” or “lively,” traits that also work on a teen, adult, or old lady. I find this especially true of many of your favorites.
A few of yours are on my personal list: [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Aimee[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I’ve always loved [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lettie[/name_f], would probably use as a NN, but only because I love so many names they’re short for. And [name_f]Posy[/name_f] would be my NN for any [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] I’d have, but I think it’s fine by itself.

I find this quite aggressive really. If I named my daughter [name_f]Millie[/name_f] because I like it - I’m not thinking of my daughter as a person? Tell that to the thousands of parents who use all the names on my list each year in the United Kingdom.

BTW, I am seriously doubting that parents care how their child’s name sounds when it’s being moaned out by a future partner in an intimate or romantic setting. I don’t think ANY parent wants to think of their child that way.

Thank you! I have honestly never heard of anyone calling [name_f]Aimee[/name_f] incorrect before

[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] (love this so I left it here even though I think it potentially should go under cutesy - I prefer it as a NN for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or [name_f]Persephone[/name_f])
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]

Cutesy:
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] (unless a NN for [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or one of the other [name_f]Ros[/name_f]- names.)
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] (unless a NN for [name_f]Grace[/name_f])

Overused:

[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]

[name_m]Just[/name_m] not my style:
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]

Caveats:
*I’m pretty sensitive to names being popular (I’ve been struggling and struggling with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] for this reason). The ones I listed as overused are ones I hear too much in my area to want to use myself. It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the names, in fact some of them are lovely.

*I think the names that come across as too cutesy to me do so because they are diminutive forms of other names. So while [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] ends in the same -ee sound, it’s not the short form of another name so it doesn’t bother me as a given name.
