Too far out names?

I know that there are names that even Nameberry feels are ‘too far out’ to put on a child, but some of them I actually am starting to like… so is there actually names that are too out there? Maybe [name]Brunhilde[/name]? or will someone else come along in a decade and love that name and the nickname Brunny?
Some that Nameberry thinks are too out but that I am really falling for:
Boys:
[name]Bertram[/name] - nn [name]Bertie[/name] is so cute
[name]Clarence[/name]
[name]Maynard[/name] - nn Mayn is so strong!
[name]Melvin[/name]
[name]Wilfred[/name] - a new way to get [name]Freddie[/name] or [name]Will[/name]?
[name]Ernest[/name] - [name]Ernie[/name] just sounds so cute (not with [name]Bert[/name]! lol)
[name]Howard[/name] - new way to [name]Ward[/name]?
[name]Lester[/name] - okay not for the weak of heart.
[name]Percy[/name]
[name]Randolph[/name]
[name]Seymour[/name]
[name]Sheldon[/name] - This seems like a name like [name]Thadeus[/name], cute and likeable!
[name]Stanley[/name]
[name]Wallace[/name] - I met a 3 year old [name]Wallace[/name] a few months back and that gave me a fresh look on this name.
[name]Wendell[/name] - nn ideas?
[name]Archibald[/name] - I love nn [name]Archie[/name]
[name]Bernard[/name]
[name]Burton[/name] - Burtie is cute too!
[name]Edgar[/name] - nn Edge is cute!
[name]Hansel[/name]
[name]Walter[/name]

Girls:
[name]Edna[/name] - cute nn [name]Edie[/name] plus fresh E ending in A name.
[name]Gertrude[/name] - love love this name! [name]Gerty[/name] and [name]Trudy[/name] are such cute nn!
[name]Helga[/name] - I didn’t like this but the more I say it the more I like it
[name]Hildegarde[/name] - I love the nicknames [name]Hilde[/name]!
[name]Hortense[/name]/[name]Hortensia[/name] - if we can do [name]Esther[/name] why not [name]Hortense[/name]?
[name]Thelma[/name]
[name]Wilma[/name]

So obviously I am more forgiving of boys names! What do you thing? Are there names you like that tend to be 'no-no’s on Nameberry?

Yeah, a lot of my favorite names tend to get trashed on Nameberry for being too geeky, clunky, far out, etc. I like [name]Marvin[/name] but there are so many stereotypes attached to the name I don’t think I could ever use it. I also like [name]Mildred[/name] and [name]Ethel[/name] for girls, but they seem to be the only old lady names not embraced for Nameberry for whatever reason. [name]How[/name] do [name]Mildred[/name] and [name]Ethel[/name] sound like they belong in a nursing home, but [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Dorothea[/name] don’t?

In regards to [name]Marvin[/name]: I actually grew up with a [name]Marvin[/name] (I was born in the 80s). He was a very popular kid who’s name never seemed out of place. I know for a fact he was never made fun of for his name either. I think many of these names seems so abstract because we have never met a young person with the name. However, once you know someone with the name they become much more usable.

Out of the list of yours, there are actually quite a few that I like! I’m kind of a sucker for “old”, clunky names.

[name]Bertram[/name] - nn [name]Bram[/name] for me
[name]Ernest[/name] - sp. [name]Earnest[/name]
[name]Howard[/name] - love it!
[name]Wallace[/name] - this is a family name for me.
[name]Archibald[/name] - I love nn [name]Archie[/name]
[name]Bernard[/name]
[name]Edgar[/name] - nn Edge, I never thought of Edge before! I like it! (cause I hate [name]Ed[/name]/[name]Eddie[/name])
[name]Walter[/name]
[name]Thelma[/name]

Others that I like, off nameberry’s lists:
[name]Clemente[/name]
[name]Eugene[/name]
[name]Homer[/name]
[name]Milton[/name] - I named my boy cat this when I was five.

[name]Elmira[/name]
[name]Ethel[/name]
[name]Eugenia[/name]/[name]Eugenie[/name]
[name]Hermia[/name]
[name]Hester[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]

It’s true, some old clunky names seem to have been deemed worthy of reviving and others have not. That said, I do think there’s something to it, personally. For instance, I still think [name]Ethel[/name], though it was my beloved grandmother’s name, is really unattractive. (It’s ok, she hated it and went by a nn based off her maiden name! :))

But, I do like many of the “clunkers” on your list.

[name]Bertram[/name]: love it
[name]Archibald[/name]
[name]Percy[/name]

[name]Thelma[/name]: I really like the prn. of this with a hard t - [name]Telma[/name]
[name]Wilma[/name]: hard to shake the Flintstones association, but if [name]Willa[/name] is such a hipster name, why can’t [name]Wilma[/name] be too?

Others I have a fondness for:

[name]Ramona[/name]
[name]Norma[/name]
[name]Linus[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name]
[name]Ines[/name]

Off of things mentioned, I would consider [name]Stanley[/name], [name]Archibald[/name], [name]Linus[/name], [name]Zelda[/name], and [name]Walter[/name].

Actually [name]Walter[/name] is a really strong contender if/when I have another child.
