Too much name?

I’ve recently developed a liking for the double middle name but DH isn’t convinced and thinks it’s too much. So what do you think?

These are my three current faves:
[name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Verity[/name]
[name]Lily[/name] [name]Audriana[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Vera[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] [name]Constance[/name]

They’re all too much for me. I think double middles are a perfect way to honor multiple family members, or something similar, but otherwise, I think they’re just more trouble than they’re worth. Filling out official forms will be more difficult, because most only allow one middle or middle initial, and if you’re never going to call out “[name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Verity[/name]” (unless she’s in trouble) then the extra middle is really just unnecessary bling, in my opinion.

I briefly thought about the trouble of filling out official forms and it makes the most sense to just use the first middle name in those cases. Honestly, my main reason for wanting the second mn is because I like so many names that I would hate it if I didn’t get the chance to use some of them…whiteout having a lot of children:) I also have an extremely common last name, as you may have inferred by my username, and to me, the second mn would give them a unique name without it being “yooneek” by changing the spellings and allowing me to use the names I want.

I would appreciate more feedback. For or against.

I think that a double middle can have it’s upside and downside. Upside - you get to be extra creative and give the name a bit more pop. Downside - this can go wrong, and you can end up with a super long name.

Personally, with my own combinations, I have 2 middle names. The third middle is almost always 1 syllable.

From yours, I think the only one that might be a bit heavy is [name]Lily[/name] [name]Audriana[/name] [name]Grace[/name]. And that’s more because of the [name]Lily[/name]-[name]Audriana[/name] flow then the heavyness. But [name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Verity[/name] and [name]Vera[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] [name]Constance[/name] are still OK to me.

Bounce

Personally, I think two middle names is just too much (less is more). Besides all the problems with official forms and such, multiple middle names just take the “wow” factor out of the names used. For instance, usually I would swoon if someone used the middle name [name]Verity[/name], but with two middle names, it just gets lost in the shuffle. The combos start looking like a list of names, rather than an actual person’s name. I know you said you wanted to give your kids two middle names since your last name is common but unless they go by all three names all the time (which I doubt you want to do and wouldn’t recommend), they’re just going to be known as [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Smith[/name], [name]Lily[/name] [name]Smith[/name] or [name]Vera[/name] [name]Smith[/name], so more middle names isn’t going to make your kids stand out.

For the record, I do think [name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Verity[/name] could work but only if you made [name]Hanna[/name]-[name]Beth[/name] into a double barrel first name (which would also spice up both [name]Hanna[/name] and [name]Beth[/name], while letting [name]Verity[/name] shine in the middle name spot).

I think in order for the double middle name to work, you have to have one of the names just be 1 syllable. Otherwise, the name is a mouthful. Your spacing of syllables works well. Therefore, I think your names are pretty successful. I’m not a fan of the double barrel first names, but that’s just me.

I keep hearing people talk about the problem of filling out forms with a double middle, but I’ve never had any difficulties. If it’s a form that says “middle name,” I give both. If it says “middle initial,” I use the first one. It’s never been an issue.

@pansy I don’t necessarily want to use the double mn to make them stand out at school or what have you, I guess I just don’t like the idea that there very well could be another [name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Jones[/name] running around in the world…but it’s less likely there will be another [name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Verity[/name] [name]Jones[/name].

…the more I read the names to myself, the more I am starting to agree with DH. Maybe it is too much.

I also have 2 middle names, and it’s never been a big issue. …Or even a little issue! I’m [name]Allison[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Lorraine[/name] (1 syllable maiden name, sounds like “hibbs”). My brothers are: [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]John[/name] [name]Kenneth[/name], [name]Nathan[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Keith[/name], and [name]Marcus[/name] [name]Reginald[/name] [name]Gary[/name]. Most of these names are honouring family. My sister is [name]Regina[/name] [name]Karen[/name] [name]Pasha[/name] (original last name) (sounds like “hibbs”). She was adopted at the age of 6, so my parents kept her last name, made it a middle, and added ours on.

I say go for it! My favourite is [name]Lily[/name] [name]Audriana[/name] [name]Grace[/name].

I like [name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Verity[/name] best

I like 2 middle names if they flow well. My DD has 2 (my sons have 1 because I never considered it before) and I’ve never had a problem with forms. I call her by her first and first middle name regularly. The second is honouring where she was born but also can be used if we find her first name is too hard for people to say here.

Most people don’t use their middle names anyway, except officially, so even one would be ‘bling’ on that criteria. If you want to use 2, use 2.

I love 2 middle names, but as I don’t have two myself or any kids at the moment I can not comment on how problematic it might be. I agree that using 2 middles is a great way to honour 2 family members, and also a great way to use more names that you love (my motivation). I think that [name]Lily[/name] [name]Audriana[/name] [name]Grace[/name] is lovely!

I agree with your husband that it’s a bit too much. I like some of your combinations, though, but with just one of the names. Like:

[name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name]
[name]Hannah[/name] [name]Verity[/name]
[name]Lily[/name] [name]Grace[/name]

I like the idea of two middles as long as they flow nicely. But then, the same goes for using one middle too! As long as the name rolls off the tongue nicely, I see no reason not to use as many middles as you want! I think [name]Hanna[/name] [name]Beth[/name] [name]Verity[/name] does flow nicely. I wouldn’t worry too much bout official forms. I know quite a few people who have two middle names and they don’t seem to have a problem

My favorite is [name]Lily[/name] [name]Audriana[/name] [name]Grace[/name]. I named my daughter [name]Audrey[/name], yet like to say [name]Audriana[/name]. [name]Lily[/name] was also on my name list too.

It is not a bit too much, nor a problem with forms. My husband has lived with [name]Matthew[/name] [name]Wesley[/name] [name]Charles[/name] for the past 33 years and never had a problem with ANY type of form, passport, etc. We chose the double middle to carry on the tradition for our son [name]Jaxson[/name] [name]Hunter[/name] [name]James[/name] and again never had a problem. If you like the double middle then definitely go with it. I think that it adds a lot of character to a name…it can make a name even that much more unique.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I’m still on the fence about it…and DH is not convinced at all…but we really don’t have anything to worry about right now:)

@calimom, [name]Audriana[/name] is a tribute to my sister [name]Audrie[/name]!

If you think it’s too much, drop the [name]Beth[/name] and go with [name]Verity[/name]. [name]Verity[/name] is more unusual, making her name one of a kind!

[name]Hannah[/name] [name]Verity[/name] [name]Jones[/name], sounds classy and smoother

The only problem with that is that [name]Beth[/name] is the family name and [name]Verity[/name] is just the guilty pleasure.
