Too much of a reach? Can I still use this NN with this name?

[name_m]Bear[/name_m] with me this kind of long lol,

So I was all set to use [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] with the nickname [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] for my name change. It is a name I’ve loved for a very long time and since I am half Russian and half Italian I figured it works out quite well but as of recently I’ve had a… disagreement with my father who has been extremely adamant that I don’t use [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] but instead [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] (which is what he wanted to name me originally). I even tried to compromise with [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] but he won’t budge.

My parent’s opinion on my new name is very, very important to me. They understand my personal reasons in wanting to change my birth name and have been really supportive and patient so far so in return I’d like my new name to be something they both love.

I do love the name [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] and it actually fits rather well in terms of meaning- “Reborn; Immortal” (in a way, I am being reborn with my new name) and if you are somewhat familiar with the backstory of [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f], a popular song called “Once Upon A [name_u]December[/name_u]” is associated with her and the month [name_u]December[/name_u] just so happens to be my birth month.

So I am completely fine with [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] but, I have gone by the name [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] for years and one of the biggest reasons why I chose [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] (Italian form of [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]) was for the fact that [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is a Russian diminutive pet form of [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]. Also, I absolutely detest the typical nickname options for [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] ([name_f]Ana[/name_f], [name_f]Anya[/name_f], [name_f]Nastya[/name_f]) and so I was wondering if it would be too much of a reach if I used [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] as nickname for [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]? [name_m]Will[/name_m] people find it weird? Me being half Russian I admit I cringe a little inside because I’m a perfectionist and using the wrong diminutive feels wrong but as I’ve said, I’m trying to compromise so I have to make due.

I think I actually have asked this question before (if I have I am so sorry this is the last time I swear) but I’m so worried about this that I need a second (and final) opinion. I’ve pushed my court date back so much that I really just need to decide and get it done with.

If you have read through this far, thank you.

I think [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] works wonderfully! I knew an [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Stacia[/name_f], which is similar to [name_u]Sasha[/name_u].

I think it works fine

I think it works well, and I think it’s a real winner as everyone gets what they want. Who cares if the nickname is a bit of a stretch, no one will ever be like “you can’t go by [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], it’s not a nickname for your name”, and if they do, then they’re crazy. From an english perspective, I think [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is just as intuitive from [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] as [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] - I don’t think it’s more obviously linked to one name or the other.

So yes, use [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f].

I agree, because [name_f]Stacia[/name_f] is so close to [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] it’s really not that big of a jump and its intuitive for me. I think its a good way to make everyone happy and most importantly you comfortable in your name change.

I actually know two Anastasias, and they both go by [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]! I definitely think it’s workable, and [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] is a beautiful name.

[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is so similar to [name_f]Stasia[/name_f] that I think it’s fine. I really like how much meaning [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] has for you, too.

I definitely think [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] still works!

Yeah go for it, I have a nephew [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] who goes by jojo, a nn doesn’t have to really make sense to the first name especially when it’s your name.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] pick the formal name you like best and want and then start intriducing yourself as whatever nn you want to be called on the daily. Most people won’t question it and if anything you can explain why you like the nn you go by if they do ask, it doesn’t have to be complicated so don’t fret.

I think it’s a little bit of a stretch, but if someone said “hi I’m [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] but go by [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]” I would think “cool”. [name_m]Hank[/name_m] is for [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_f]Sally[/name_f] is from [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]- a nn doesn’t have to be super obvious. Heck I know a girl who is named [name_f]Erica[/name_f]. She likes her name, she has no interest in changing it, but her friends started calling her [name_f]Sally[/name_f] when she was about 7 in a make believe game (they always had fake names too). [name_f]Sally[/name_f] stuck and merged into her real life. She goes by [name_f]Sally[/name_f] now. I know that’s an extreme story but my point is [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] works just fine with [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]…and even if it didn’t I’d still go with it. It makes you happy

Works perfectly! I knew an [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] who was Russian and she went by [name_f]Tasha[/name_f] - almost exclusively - as a NN.

That definitely works. [name_f]Do[/name_f] it!!

I have known two [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]'s, one went by [name_u]Stacey[/name_u] and the other by [name_f]Asia[/name_f]… [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] seems a more intuitive nn then either one. [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] makes a lot of sence to me.

Sound-wise, it could work. But I understand that it seems off when it comes to “getting the right dimunitive”.

Back at you though. Between Anastasia and Alessandra, which one you actually love more?
And if the Sasha for Anastasia is fine for you, I say go with it.
