Lately I’ve been crushing on the name [name]Agnes[/name]. I absolutely love both its English ([name]AG[/name]-ness) and French (ahn-YESS) pronunciations, I love it as a way to honor my mom (since their meanings are identical). I really love the idea of [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] as a combo–and [name]Violet[/name] would even honor my two grandmothers and my dad, as well. I’ve been tossing around [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name] or [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Jane[/name] as a full combo. I think, with the French pronunciation, I could even get away with [name]Annie[/name] as a nickname for it (or even [name]Anya[/name]), which I’ve always loved. I love the French inspiration behind [name]Agnes[/name], as well–I’m part French, love the language, and am a bit of a Francophone, so everything about it seems perfect to me… except that it is still very much an old-lady name to a lot of people. I’ve posted about it on another name site, and they seemed quite appalled that I genuinely loved it for a future daughter–is it really that bad?
I know [name]Agnes[/name] is more likely to be a name that Berries would say go for it, but I honestly don’t want a name that my daughter would grow up hating, much as I adore it. Then again, I’ve heard several references to [name]Agnes[/name] lately–[name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Connelly[/name]'s baby, the little girl in Despicable Me, and I know one or two Berries have used it for their daughters recently. [name]Do[/name] you think it’ll make a comeback? Or is it destined to stay old-lady forever? Could it work as a FN? Or should I stick it in the MN spot? Thoughts on [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Jane[/name]/[name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name]?
Personally, I don’t care for the name. I know older “grandma-ish” names are becoming popular again… but I’m just not sold. I feel you should trust your instincts though, if you truly love a name, and especially if it has meaning to you, then you can’t go wrong.
I love [name]Agnes[/name]. I think it’s classic and beautiful. You have put a lot of thought into the name as well, and I think that would mean a lot to your future daughter.
I don’t care for [name]Agnes[/name], personally, but I don;t think it’s too “old lady” at all - all old ladies were babies and little girls at some point.
I might not be the right person to give advice on whether something is too “old lady”, since I love a TON of names that others consider “old lady” - that said, though, I think [name]Agnes[/name] is lovely. She’s a classic, and was once the third-most popular name in the English-speaking world, and definitely seems to be getting more attention now, for all the reasons you mentioned.
I love [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Jane[/name] - I personally wouldn’t go with [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name], since [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Lark[/name] was the combo that [name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Connelly[/name] used. I also think [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Hope[/name] would be stunning.
Well, I’m glad to know at least some people would like her name, haha. I was wondering if I should go for [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Jane[/name] rather than [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name] due to [name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Connelly[/name], but I can’t help loving it! I think [name]Lark[/name] adds a bit of lightness and frivolity to the combo as a whole, which is nice, since [name]Agnes[/name] seems pretty heavy to a lot of people. Either way, though, [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Lark[/name] are both honoring–[name]Jane[/name] is a feminization of my dad’s and brother’s (and grandfather’s, and great-grandfather’s…) names, and [name]Lark[/name] would be for my grandma, again, since birding has always been a hobby of hers. Since it feels like [name]Violet[/name] isn’t too strong of a nod toward her (it’s only her favorite color, which is nice, but it doesn’t seem to honor her as obviously as something like her initials or one of her actual names would), so I like that [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Lark[/name] together honor her quite nicely. I was afraid that [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name] was a bit overload, but if I’m being honest, I do prefer it to [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Jane[/name].
Another of my concerns is that I can’t really see [name]Agnes[/name] as a sister to any of my current favorites. Something like [name]Edith[/name] or [name]Florence[/name], sure, but can you really see [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Isabelle[/name] as siblings? [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Liliana[/name]? [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Rachel[/name]? I’m not sure I can.
This is one and only “old lady name” that I don’t care for. Usually I love, or at the very least could learn to LIKE other vintage/old-fashioned names, but I just don’t think [name]Agnes[/name] OR [name]Aggie[/name] sounds pretty! I think I could probably get on board with [name]Agatha[/name] though…
I [name]DO[/name] appreciate that it has meaning for you, but I can’t picture a teenager or young woman loving this name.
I love [name]Agnes[/name], it’s beautiful. [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name] is my favourite, despite the [name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Connelly[/name] association (I love [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Lark[/name]!!).
I’m sorry, but [name]Agnes[/name] is one name that I don’t think I’ll ever get behind. I don’t see any appeal in it besides the nickname of Ness.
I personally would be so unhappy with [name]Agnes[/name] as my name, but that’s just me! [name]Plenty[/name] would probably love it. I also find the nn of [name]Aggie[/name] just dreadful, I do not understand that appeal at all. I don’t think I ever will. All I get from it is Eggy, Acne, and Agitated.
I think [name]Agnes[/name] is forever “old-lady”, which is great for those who like those styles, and are against popular, trendy names. My mother classifies [name]Agnes[/name] as “old-lady” and she’s in her 40s. I also don’t think it fits with [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Arianne[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Everett[/name] or [name]Asher[/name] at all.
I think it’s better in the middle personally. [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is better than [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name] imo.
I never really say that a name is too old lady because some people may not be able to picture it on a baby, but I cannot picture a nursing home full of Nevaehs and Brooklyns, can you? So I don’t think she would hate her name at all. I think it is lovely. I go straight to the little girl from Despicable Me, she was my ringtone for a while haha! I thought she was the most adorable thing ever. I slightly prefer [name]Agatha[/name], because it has more spunk to me, but I don’t think I will ever talk [name]Dillon[/name] into that one.
I think it works! I like [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Lark[/name]. If you love it, go for it! I don’t think a lot of people will associate it with [name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Connelly[/name]. Plus, you could go with [name]Annie[/name] or [name]Aggie[/name] for a nn. I can see the trouble of a sibset though, so that’s something to keep under consideration.
I adore it! However, I don’t think that you’d be able to get people to say it with the French pronunciation. I think people generally have a tough time saying a name in another language if it has the same spelling. Same with if you wanted the French pronunciation of [name]Nicholas[/name], [name]Nicole[/name], [name]David[/name], etc. It’s on my long list though and I love it with either pronunciation…I think it’s even fun that it would be said differently depending on which country we’re in.
It’s kind of growing on me. On the one hand I think “too old-lady” and on the other hand I think it sounds kind of elegant in a way. But I really don’t like the nickname [name]Aggie[/name], I don’t find the sound attractive at all.
I love [name]Agnes[/name], though a lot of the names I love are considered “old-lady”. I think that it’s a name due for a comeback. The meaning is good, and it has interesting pronunciations. (I never knew the French spelling until now, so it’s interesting!) I think that [name]Agnes[/name] could be a sibling to an [name]Isabelle[/name] or a [name]Liliana[/name]. [name]Rachel[/name], not so much, but yes to [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Liliana[/name]. I also think that [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is the prettier combination. Something about [name]Lark[/name] throws me off.
I hope that helps!
