too plain? or stick with family favorites?

[name]Hi[/name] berries!

I’m not pregnant yet, but I wish I were! I’m finishing up graduate school, so we have at least a year to go. In the meantime, I’m obsessing with names. It doesn’t help that my sister just had her second. Or maybe it does. I can have my baby fix with her precious little one!

Anyway, dh family is Irish Catholic, and we have an Irish surname. The two names that have stuck out in both of our minds for quite some time for a girl are [name]Colleen[/name] and [name]Anne[/name], [name]Colleen[/name] because of my mother and [name]Anne[/name] for his mother.

The more time I spend on name berry, the more options I find! And the more I seem to drift from these two “favorites”! I still like [name]Colleen[/name] but can’t seem to find a middle name that works for me. For a nn, I like [name]Lolly[/name] or [name]LeeLee[/name]. [name]Anne[/name] is beginning to seem “too plain” even though I love plain! I absolutely have time, no doubt, to think through this more and see where time leads me, but what are you thoughts?

Some names I have considered: --also see my signature for more names I like–
[name]Anne[/name] [name]Josefine[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Josefine[/name]. My mom suggested [name]Annie[/name]-[name]Jo[/name], but I’m not sure that doesn’t sound too “southern” for me.
[name]Colleen[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] - I love both of these names, but I don’t feel a *spark
[name]One[/name] name that really caught my attention was [name]Louisa[/name] [name]Frances[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] both of these. The more I said it out loud, the more it started to sound like [name]Lisa[/name]. And I’m not a big fan of [name]Lisa[/name].

I absolutely love [name]Anne[/name]! Such a classic and underused name. Hmm, how about [name]Anne[/name] [name]Collette[/name]? That would honor both your moms, [name]Anne[/name] and [name]Colleen[/name], and the combination is quite pretty. You could even hyphenate to [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Collette[/name] and it becomes a French double name, which is a trend I’m loving.

As far as [name]Colleen[/name] goes, it still sounds a little bit 1950’s, but I think she and sister [name]Maureen[/name] could be ready for a comeback. [name]How[/name] about [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]? I think the classic, yet current [name]Victoria[/name] provides a nice balance.

Thanks esrever for your thoughts! Yes, I hear you on [name]Colleen[/name], and yet, DH loves it so much! I like your idea of using a more current mn with it. What about [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Violet[/name]?

Have you ever thought of [name]Anna[/name] in place of [name]Anne[/name] - I think [name]Anna[/name] [name]Colleen[/name] is really pretty!

Ooo… I really like that! I have always liked [name]Anne[/name] but [name]Anna[/name] [name]Colleen[/name] sounds really nice. Thanks, that’s definitely going on the list!

Hmm, I like [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Violet[/name]! Actually, I think the reverse - [name]Violet[/name] [name]Colleen[/name] - might flow a bit better, but either is quite nice. Here’s a few more ideas:

[name]Colleen[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Colleen[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Colleen[/name] [name]Eve[/name]
[name]Colleen[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]

I like [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Anna[/name] because neither have the strong ee sound like [name]Colleen[/name]. Our ln also has a strong ee sound, so I guess three ee’s is too much.

[name]Violet[/name] [name]Colleen[/name]
[name]Anna[/name] [name]Colleen[/name]

Thanks for these ideas! Any other suggestions welcome =)

[name]Colleen[/name] and [name]Anne[/name] are great names to have in the family! [name]Both[/name] are very pretty and classic. [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Anne[/name] and [name]Anne[/name] [name]Colleen[/name] are both nice. Also both have some variations you could play with. [name]Colleen[/name] lends itself to the beautiful [name]Colette[/name], and [name]Anne[/name] has many options: [name]Anna[/name], [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Anneliese[/name], [name]Annika[/name], [name]Anja[/name] and many others. I love [name]Anna[/name] [name]Colette[/name], [name]Annabel[/name] [name]Colette[/name] and [name]Colette[/name] [name]Anneliese[/name]. Best of luck!

Oh yes, I do like [name]Anja[/name] / [name]Anya[/name]. Very nice. Something to consider. It makes me think of [name]Audrey[/name] Hepburn in [name]Roman[/name] [name]Holiday[/name], a movie I must have watch a few dozen times in high school.

I want to stick with [name]Colleen[/name] for its Irish connection. Ideas on more fresh/ spunky middle names?

I like [name]Colleen[/name]! I’m not in love with it since it was the name of the cat my grandma had when I was a kid, but I do think that it’s pretty.

I think [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], and [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Simone[/name] are all lovely choices. Iffy on [name]Colleen[/name] [name]Violet[/name]. I think it might work, but there’s something that’s not visually appealing about it to me. Names have to sound good, and look good on paper for me to really love them.

I also like the hyphenated idea: [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Colleen[/name] [name]Violet[/name] & [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Colleen[/name] [name]Simone[/name] both seem really original and very chic.

[name]Anne[/name] is my all time favorite girl’s name! Unfortunately, I only got to use it as a middle name for my daughter. It is not plain at all! It is regal and queenly while still being sweet. I also like [name]Coleen[/name], but [name]Anne[/name] is perfect.

firsttimer, thanks. It’s hard to convince dh to jump on board with [name]Louisa[/name] [name]Frances[/name], but it’s at the top of my list!

boyandgirl, thanks for sharing your love for [name]Anne[/name] and for reminding me why I have always loved it!
