Too Seventies?

I really love the name [name_f]Heather[/name_f] do you guys think it’s too eighties/seventies?

Although nature names are in vogue, [name_f]Heather[/name_f] is stuck in the 70-80’s period so it’s currently “dated”. Personally, I knew far too many mean Heathers growing up to even suggest it to anyone. It may be another generation before she’s revived again.

[name_m]Way[/name_m] too dated.

I don’t think it’s that bad.
My youngest sister’s best friend is named [name_f]Heather[/name_f], and she’s twelve.
Maybe it’s just where I’m from, but I know a lot of Heathers my age (early twenties) and younger.

Well, it’s definitely an 80’s name, but it would depend on the kid. I think it could work depending on the family.

Sorry, but it’s definitely an 80s name. At least until those of us who lived through the 80s get a little older.

No, I don’t think it’s dated.

But that’s coming from someone that doesn’t think a lot of names are “dated”. For me [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f] and [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] (etc.) are NOT dated because even though they were popular, there’s no association or character that “throws them in the 80’s” to me. Whereas every 80’s movie had a main character named [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] and [name_f]Melissa[/name_f].

Personally really don’t like it!

I grew up w/a lot of Heathers, but always found it soft, pretty, nature-y. I like it. People in her generation won’t think of it as an 80’s name.

I don’t particularly like the name [name_f]Heather[/name_f], because I have bad associations with it. I do think its a bit too dated as well

Actually, there was a film that came out in the late eighties named “Heathers” which made fun of the overused name. The film portrays four girls — three of whom are named [name_f]Heather[/name_f] — in a clique at a high school. So- yeah - it’s very “dated” to the 70’s and 80’s.

In a word, yes. I think [name_f]Heather[/name_f] will get a revival in about 50-60 years, when people are naming their babies after their grandmothers (and it’s considered a chic old lady name choice).

I thought of the movie “Heathers” right away. [name_m]Even[/name_m] without that, it does ring dated to my ears. When I hear the name [name_f]Heather[/name_f] I picture a woman with a perm–I can’t help it!

I wonder if a double name might help save it. All the options I can come up with sound fairly Southern, though. [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Heather[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f]…none are striking it out of the park for me.

[name_f]Heather[/name_f] the plant is such a lovely thing.

To be honest, you shouldn’t really care whether a name is too 70s or 80s or whatever. A lot of names are recycled, and only a few are newly invented–and even those are borrowed from words or other languages. If people still want to name their babies [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], or [name_f]Emily[/name_f], what’s so wrong with [name_f]Heather[/name_f]?

Besides, your signature says you’re twelve; if you like a name, its no big deal. Its not like you’re having a baby tomorrow or anything. [name_m]Just[/name_m] have fun with the names you like!

[name_f]Heather[/name_f] is a perfectly good name! It isn’t misspelt and it’s fairly traditional; what’s not to like?? Personally, I feel that ranks it far above made up/smoosh/surname names.

I hate the term ‘dated’.

[name_m]Say[/name_m] [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], for example. Like [name_f]Heather[/name_f] it’s not a name I’d pick myself but it has all the qualities I respect in a name and is ridiculously popular at the moment, like [name_f]Heather[/name_f] was in the 70’s/80’s. But that isn’t going to detract from it’s appeal in ten years time; it’s still going to be the same nice name despite it’s former popularity.

I did specify that there was no real association “to me”. I have never heard of this movie so my statement remains true and I still do not believe it to be dated.

I agree with this.

I’ve seen [name_f]Heather[/name_f] used a lot as an example of a dated name, like “oh ____ isn’t dated, at least it’s not super dated like [name_f]Heather[/name_f]” but I think it would stop seeming dated if people started using it again. [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] seemed dated until daring parents revived it and now you’d picture it on a little girl sooner than an old woman. I think [name_f]Heather[/name_f] has a really pretty sound and the nature connection is appealing, go for it!

I couldn’t agree more. I have never met a [name_f]Heather[/name_f] that was even remotely nice so personally I think it is an ugly name through and through.
