I have a really hard time finding boys names that I like.
I thought I had finally found the perfect combination, but I just stumbled over something I’d like to get your input on.
[name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] (Eh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-us) is a family name. [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] is, after much searching, the only name that I can really see as an option. (Always open for other suggestions, of course.)
Now my question is:
[name_f]Do[/name_f] the two names sound too similar- too rhymey? Aur-[name_u]ELIA[/name_u]-n [name_u]ELIA[/name_u]-s. It hadn’t occurred to me until now that they both share those four letters and that they are pronounced the same way. The only difference is that the emphasis is on a different syllable.
Pronouncing [name_u]Elias[/name_u] as you do, the “elia” sounds are a bit too repetitive, sorry. The more common pronunciation I’ve seen for [name_u]Elias[/name_u] though is ee-LYE-us, and if you pronounce it that way it sounds fine to me, still not perfect but better.
I would pronounce it like my family does(Eh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-us,) evening that’s less common in the US and gets me into trouble with this combination… I think I’d rather find a replacement for [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] if people think they really are too repetitive.
I think it only occurred to me now because I’ve had the two names switched for the longest time - [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] - , and so I didn’t notice the similarity, rather like a well-flowing name.
If I switched the name back to [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m], would that make a difference? Or should I go back to the drawing board?
By the looks and sound, I would say [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is too similar because the N is the only thing separating it from repeating. If your heart is set on these names, I would go with [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] that way the Aur- syllable separates the repeating -elia from both names.
I personally don’t think it’s a big deal because how often do you really say the full first and middle name combination out loud? On paper it looks really pretty. But if you care about the names flowing a bit better together I would go with [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m]. Could always call him by his middle if you prefer that!
I personally do find it a bit of a tongue-twister, though I really adore both names! [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] in particular is incredibly handsome.
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] does sound better because the repeated sounds are further separated, but pronouncing [name_u]Elias[/name_u] the way you do means that there’s always going to be that repetition.
I definitely think they’re too similar in sound, considering how [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is going to be pronounced. However, using [name_u]Elias[/name_u] up front would cause for a lot of corrections as Ee-lee-us isn’t the typical spelling.
Yes, I’m currently leaning towards going back to [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] and calling him [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] (although it always strikes me as weird when people call their kids by their middle name…)
I do like a [name_m]LITTLE[/name_m] BIT of repetition or similarity in sound, I feel it can tie a name together. But it does seem that [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u] just has the n separating the sounds so I think that particular order of names is out.
Does this help?: We do two middle names. The second one might be a version of [name_m]Peter[/name_m] (another family name, but haven’t settled on a version yet because I have several options for that name in my family tree.)
So technically I could move those around and have [name_m]Peter[/name_m] in between to break it up a little… [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u]?
Only issue is that I’m not really fond of this name, and would only use it as an honor name…
Since they are so similar, have you considered using [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m]? It is an actual name as well, means “golden one”, but is basically a combo of the two. You would need to find another middle name, but perhaps this satisfies what you’re looking for?
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] does flow better and sounds less repetitive, but here’s a couple of suggestions for names that are similar in style to [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] that work with [name_u]Elias[/name_u] for you:
[name_u]Auberon[/name_u] [name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_u]Auden[/name_u] [name_u]Elias[/name_u]
I wish you the best in finding a name that you simply adore soon!
Thank you! I do like [name_u]Auden[/name_u]. For some reason, the b in [name_u]Auberon[/name_u] always throws me off… I have the combo back to [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] now, but am staying open for othe options.
