Too strange?

I have become really attached to the name [name]Ray[/name] lately and can totally see it as the name of a second son if I ever have one. The thing is though, that I’m not sure if I’d use just [name]Ray[/name]. I thought of [name]Raymond[/name] and I like that but I asked my husband and he said “It’s okay, I wouldn’t hate it if we used it” which means I could use it but I’d want a better reaction to it than that from him. So anyway I recently found [name]Rayner[/name] and I really like it but have not suggested it to my husband yet because I’m not sure if it would be considered weird by the average person.

What do you think of the name [name]Rayner[/name], is it weird?
I also found [name]Rainer[/name], which I like the look of better, but it is pronounced [name]RY[/name]-ner, so I couldn’t use the nn [name]Ray[/name]. Actually I think I like [name]Rainer[/name] too, is [name]Rainer[/name] too weird? would everyone call him ray-ner either way? What image do you get for [name]Ray[/name]? [name]Rayner[/name]? [name]Rainer[/name]?

I also love the nn [name]Ray[/name], altho when i was looking at it i was looking for girl names that could result in the nn ray.

[name]Ive[/name] known ppl who just have the name [name]Ray[/name], but if you want a longer version i think [name]Rayner[/name] is the best, [name]Rainer[/name] i would pronounce [name]Rain[/name]-er

I know a girl in her mid-twenties named [name]Rayner[/name]. I think it’s super awesome and sounds wonderful (better, actually) on a boy. [name]Rainer[/name] still looks like rain-er to me so I’d go ahead and use the nn [name]Ray[/name].
[name]Ray[/name] is pretty much locked in as the middle name for our future firstborn. It’s my husband’s middle and his dad and granddad, ect. He’s at least a 5th generation “[name]Ray[/name]”. [name]Ray[/name] on it’s own is NMS but It’s not hard to work with as a middle and for you, it’s very charming as a part of [name]Rayner[/name]/[name]Rainer[/name].

Nice choice! Best of luck!

I prefer [name]Raymond[/name], [name]Rayner[/name]/[name]Rainer[/name] just looks and sounds trendy. Also I would say [name]Rainer[/name] as [name]Rain[/name]-er, and [name]Rayner[/name] as [name]Ray[/name]-ner, so there is a slight pn difference for me.

I much prefer [name]Rayner[/name]/[name]Rainer[/name] to [name]Raymond[/name]. Of the two spellings, I prefer [name]Rainer[/name]. I like the look of it as well.
And just reading it, I pronounced it as [name]Rain[/name]-er as well and (at least when I say them)[name]Rainer[/name] and [name]Rayner[/name] have no distinction whatsoever, so I think the nickname [name]Ray[/name] would hold true for either spelling. However, if you say it differently than you would [name]Rayner[/name], I would stick with [name]Rayner[/name].

I prefer [name]Raymond[/name]. A friend of mine is planning on using it to honor family.

I think like [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Raymond[/name] may be the next name to be nerdy grandpa cool.

I think [name]Raymond[/name] is a strong grounded name and I like the meaning.

I love [name]Ray[/name], and [name]Rayner[/name] is nice too.
What’s the pronunciation difference between [name]Ray[/name]-ner and [name]Rain[/name]-er? I pronounce [name]Rain[/name] the same as “ray” but with an n at the end.

The difference in pronunciation is because [name]Rainer[/name] is a [name]German[/name] variant of [name]Rayner[/name]. It is technically said [name]RYE[/name]-ner. I am super excited because my husband said he could see [name]Rainer[/name] pronounced [name]Rain[/name]-er growing on him :-D. And I just realized that the name honors my mother too because her childhood nickname was [name]Rainy[/name]. It doesn’t really bother me that we would technically be pronouncing it wrong because in English “ai” doesn’t usually make a long i sound so everyone would see [name]Rain[/name]-er either way. [name]Rayner[/name] just doesn’t look as nice at all.

To the poster who said it sound made up and trendy, that’s a bit what I was worried about but the more I think about the more I feel like it fits in with names like that without exactly belonging to that group. Where I live I think a [name]Rainer[/name] would fit in better than [name]Raymond[/name] (although I still adore [name]Raymond[/name]) and I’m becoming really attached to [name]Ray[/name], which I think would fit in fine too. Plus, it is a real name with a long history of use.

Any more thoughts are welcome. What image do you get of a boy named [name]Rainer[/name]? Is it okay that I’m not using the original pronunciation for this spelling?

I prefer [name]Raymond[/name], but if you were to use [name]Rainer[/name] and pronounce it like [name]Rayner[/name], I’d try to pronounce it “[name]Rye[/name]-ner” and when I found out it was supposed to be pronounced differently, I’d assume the parents read it somewhere, didn’t know the pronunciation, and weren’t capable of looking it up before they chose their own made-up pronunciation for their son.

Then again, lots of names eventually end up with an English/foreign pronunciation and become widely used in English speaking countries, so most people might find it ok.

I prefer [name]Raymond[/name] with nn [name]Ray[/name].

out here in the pacific nw we have Mt. [name]Rainier[/name] , which I always though might be a nice name (pronounced “[name]Ray[/name]-neer”)

What about [name]Raiden[/name]?

[name]Rainier[/name] is a great suggestion, I was also going to suggest that!

[name]Raymond[/name] is my favorite from your original list though

Ha, that’s around where I’m from! I thought of [name]Rainier[/name] briefly, but it doesn’t sound name-y to me.

I think I’m abandoning the whole [name]Ray[/name] idea, it was just a temporary interest but my husband doesn’t like the nickname [name]Ray[/name] very much for any name really. We aren’t ttc yet but we already have our girl name 90% likely chosen and I just want a boy name too! But he seems to dislike all boy’s names except [name]Warren[/name], which we already named our first son. So needless to say I get excited when he doesn’t make fun of a suggestion I make right away :(. On to more possibilities, I guess.

I actually love [name]Ray[/name] as a second half to a double barreled name for a girl!
