[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! Okay so my 1st son’s name is [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] (Charles on the birth certificate), which my husband and I decided on pretty easily. Now we’re trying to pick a name for a 2nd son and I’m a little bit stuck.
For a while now, we have leaned toward “[name_u]Sam[/name_u]” ([name_m]Samuel[/name_m] on the birth certificate), which I love but for some reason I hesitate a little bit on this name. I love how it looks and I think it’s friendly, laid back, and classic like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is. But when I say it out loud I don’t love it as much, if that makes sense. I think I have a hard time picturing a baby named [name_u]Sam[/name_u] and I don’t know what I would call him. Then again I might be overthinking this.
Probably my favorite name otherwise would be [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and our family loves that name BUT I worry that it’s too themey with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], as they both end with an “ee” sound. I don’t really like family name themes, and would prefer the names to have the same “vibe” rather than start with the same letter, etc. Also, if we have a 3rd boy down the road with a 1 syllable, non-“ee” ending name, is it going to sound weird (ex: [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], and [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], and [name_m]Will[/name_m]). I’m probably overthinking this but wanted to get the opinions of other name nerds like myself. Thank you in advance!
that’s super helpful! what do / did you call your [name_u]Sam[/name_u] as a baby? [name_u]Sammy[/name_u]? just sam? I have a hard time picturing it on a baby, but I felt that way about charlie too until he was born haha
We called him [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] as a baby, bc I originally didn’t want any nicknames for him. Well he decided in preschool that he was just [name_u]Sam[/name_u] bc it was easier to learn to write and spell [name_u]Sam[/name_u] than [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]. So since the age of 3 he has been just [name_u]Sam[/name_u] and I couldn’t picture any other name on him.
Not too themey. [name_m]Charles[/name_m] might become [name_m]Chaz[/name_m] or [name_m]Chad[/name_m]. [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] could be [name_u]Sammy[/name_u]. If [name_m]Will[/name_m] is short for [name_m]William[/name_m], that could be [name_m]Bill[/name_m], [name_u]Billy[/name_u], or [name_u]Liam[/name_u].
I wouldn’t stress it! I don’t think that they sound too themey and the fact that [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]’s actual name is [name_m]Charles[/name_m] makes it less matchy for sure! I think both names go great with big brother but my personal favorite is [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. I think on a baby I’d probaly call a [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] “[name_u]Sammy[/name_u]”.
I adore [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and think it’s lovely with [name_m]Charles[/name_m]/Charlie. Not too matching at all. And if you were to have a [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or a [name_m]Will[/name_m] in the future, I don’t think that matters at all either.
I love both [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] & [name_m]Henry[/name_m], honestly. But I totally get what you mean about liking how a name looks, but not loving saying it as much. If you feel like [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is more ‘the one’ that you’re comfortable with, go for it. It’s not too match-y w/Charlie at all. Especially since his full name is [name_m]Charles[/name_m].
I voted for [name_u]Sam[/name_u] because in the UK [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] are both members of the royal family/monarchy so it definitely is too themed for me but for a very different reason. Plus I like [name_u]Sam[/name_u]. You are right about it being friendly.
I don’t really see the ending as a problem, even if you used [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and then had a third son called [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or [name_m]Will[/name_m].
However, I will say you could have the ee ending throughout if you used the nickname [name_u]Sammy[/name_u].
I love [name_u]Sam[/name_u] ! If you can’t get into [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] have you thought about some alternatives
[name_m]Sampson[/name_m]
[name_m]Samson[/name_m]
[name_m]Samwell[/name_m]
Omg I can’t believe I didn’t even make the royal family connection! Lol! I didn’t even think of that. That def makes me lean more toward [name_u]Sam[/name_u]. Thank you for pointing that out
