I am due any day now and feel like I’m still having major naming issues. Right now, one of our top two names is [name]Sawyer[/name] (having a boy). Our other son’s name is [name]Landon[/name] and I feel like they go together well. However, is [name]Sawyer[/name] still primarily a masculine name…or is it becoming too popular for girls. [name]Just[/name] wanted other thoughts.
Also, having trouble with a middle name. We were considering [name]David[/name], but that just gets to “boring” sounding to me.
So…
[name]Sawyer[/name]- [name]Male[/name] or Female? and middle name suggestions PLEASE
Where is this idea that [name]Sawyer[/name] is shifting female coming from. According to the tables I’ve seen (like at Behind the Name) [name]Sawyer[/name] isn’t even ranking in the top 1000 girl names.
Most naming sights list it as being an “increasingly popular unisex name.” Sights include nameberry, babycenter.com, babynamewizard.com, and babynames.com. I know that using it for males is still higher ranked, but I just want to know what people think. In twenty years I don’t want people to hear the name [name]Sawyer[/name] and have to ask if its a boy or a girl…considering its newly becoming popular for some celebrity baby girls and could go for both. With a boy, I really want a masculine sounding name and really want to know opinions as to whether [name]Sawyer[/name] is still primarily masculine.
I wonder what they are basing this increasing trend on then, because if no baby girls are being given this name in the top 1000 how can it be a trend?
Honestly, it’s this kind of thinking that leads to boys name being given to the girls. Girls aren’t taking them away, parents are giving them to the girls because they become too afraid to use them on boys and in some cases for no good reason. [name]Sawyer[/name] is in the top 200 or so names for boys. It’s a good solid name, has a literary reference that is male, a character part that is male (LOST) I can’t see what is the downside of using it for a boy.
In 1990 [name]Riley[/name] was a lower ranked male name with hardly any girls using it, now 20 years later girls outrank boys, but who could have predicted that?
If it is a concern then sticking to more traditional and not less common surname type names that tend to be game for more unisex is the way to go.
Great points!!! I love the name and the idea that it has a traditional feel, is a familiar name, but not “too” popular. Loving the name like I do (I think of an adverterous, well-liked, and a little bit of an ornery boy) I prefer it over “highly” traditional names. And when you mentioned the trend with [name]Riley[/name], I still consider it a more masculine name and love it for boys that are still in their teens or twenties
[name]Do[/name] you have any good suggestions for middle names? Sorry to keep asking…but I’m STUCK! I kind of like [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Channing[/name]…but feel like that might give it too much of a unisex feel. Other considerations are [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]David[/name], [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Patrick[/name], or [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Micheal[/name]. However, I like trendier middle names. Our other son’s name is [name]Landon[/name] [name]Parker[/name].
Our other name option is [name]Payson[/name]. We are leaning more towards [name]Sawyer[/name]…feel its a stronger name. Suggestions/Opinions?!
I really like [name]Sawyer[/name] and the association for me is with [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name], a character who is very masculine and clever.
I think [name]Landon[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] would make a great brother duo. If you do choose [name]Sawyer[/name], then in your own small way, you’ve helped keep the name for the boys! Here are some middle name suggestions for [name]Sawyer[/name] All the best!
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Crew[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Dean[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Grant[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Lee[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Gable[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Ross[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Finn[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Beau[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Vaughan[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Tate[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Heath[/name]
I definitely think [name]Sawyer[/name] is more masculine looking, sounding etc, than [name]Payson[/name] which has a similar feel to [name]Payton[/name] that is definitely a stronger female linkage.
If you use [name]Sawyer[/name] though I’d use a solid established male name, one that is not likely to create any ambiguity in the future if the trends shift. My middle name is [name]Kieran[/name], and was solidly male when I had it, but is now trending female.
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]James[/name] (from the LOST character) comes to mind
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] I like from your list
In terms of your trendier naming style what about something like [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Cooper[/name] or [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Carter[/name]? They sound male and maybe fit your style. Is it something like this you want.
personally I think that it is more feminine than masculine, even if it isn’t popular now for girls it might be later.
i still think you should go with sawyer, it is a lovely name!
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Joseph[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Matthew[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Chase[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Jacob[/name] are all good names.
[name]Sawyer[/name] is definitely not unisex. I have only met male Sawyers and the name is distinctly masculine. There’s also the [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] association. I think [name]Landon[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] are awesome together.
I had a friend suggest [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Vaughan[/name] also, but our last name is “Vike” and it sounds a little too “[name]German[/name]” together I was just thinking of [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Grant[/name] and think I might like that!!!
Also to cka… I do like the name [name]Cooper[/name], but we wouldn’t go with it because of popularity. I thought of [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Cooper[/name], but wondered two things. [name]Do[/name] [name]Landon[/name] [name]Parker[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Cooper[/name] sound too matchy? Also, do you think the “er” combinations go okay for first name-middle name combination. [name]Just[/name] things I’d take suggestions on
Also, opinions on [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Callan[/name]? And any mn’s that start with “M”? My deceased father’s initials were S.M.L.
I think my favorites now are:
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Patrick[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Grant[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Cooper[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Callan[/name] or [name]Kellen[/name]???
I like [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Maddox[/name]…but husband doesn’t like [name]Maddox[/name]
Go for [name]Sawyer[/name]! Like others have said, it’s still very much primarily used for boys. Since he mentioned it, cke’s middle name ([name]Kieran[/name]) also falls in this category. [name]Don[/name]'t surrender these kinds of names for boys just because a few girls have them.
Again… great point cka!!! I’m super happy to be getting the reassurance that [name]Sawyer[/name] is still seen as a masculine name also
[name]Grant[/name] was one of my husband’s name picks…and I think [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Grant[/name] could grow on me! What do you all think of [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Crew[/name]?
Personally I wouldn’t go with another “er” name in the middle spot with [name]Sawyer[/name]. [name]How[/name] about [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Callum[/name] i/o of [name]Callan[/name] or [name]Kellen[/name]? Here are some “M” middle names.
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Morgan[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Mason[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Marshall[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Murphy[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Marcus[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Malcolm[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Miles[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Martin[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Mitchell[/name]
I can’t imagine [name]Sawyer[/name] on a girl! It’s all male to me - mostly because of the [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] association. I do like [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Callan[/name] but [name]Callan[/name] is a girls name and like it’s been pointed out, [name]Kellan[/name] could move towards girls as well. What about [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Callum[/name]?
M middle names:
[name]Marshall[/name]
[name]Mason[/name]
[name]Maxwell[/name]
[name]Matthew[/name]
[name]Mead[/name]
[name]Mitchell[/name]
[name]Edit[/name]: Ha! Snap [name]Mischa[/name]! I must’ve been writing as you were posting
Now I’m just excited for my husband to get home! I feel like there is lots of great middle name options here to run by him I felt like I was having “naming block” with a darn middle name. Couldn’t thank you name berries enough!!!
I’ve only ever heard of [name]Sawyer[/name] as a masculine name. As the PP said, it isn’t even in the top 1000 for girls. For a MN how about:
