I usually love classic but uncommon names but lately a few “out there” names have really for me thinking. Are these names a little too hipster/unusual? Would you actually use any of these names to name a child or should they stay guilty pleasures?
No…All these names are in use…not overly common, but not what I’d term ‘unusual’. I have ancestors named [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], & [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m].
I like most of the names on your lists and most of them really aren’t that “out there”. I don’t care for [name_f]Vada[/name_f], [name_f]Odessa[/name_f], [name_m]Kal[/name_m], or [name_m]Luka[/name_m] but I think all the others are lovely and perfectly wearable!
Most of your girls picks are becoming increasingly common, as are your boys picks, so while some people might say they’re unusual, any children with these names will probably have classmates and friends with similar names, so they might not see them as strange at all.
Of the names you’ve listed, I’d use [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Vada[/name_f], [name_f]Odessa[/name_f], and [name_f]Mila[/name_f] for girls, and [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], and [name_m]Luka[/name_m] for boys. I love [name_u]Cal[/name_u], but with a “C”—[name_m]Kal[/name_m] makes me think of [name_m]Kal[/name_m]-[name_f]El[/name_f], which is Superman’s Kryptonian name, which is less usable for me (though I’d definitely use [name_m]Clark[/name_m]).
I don’t find any of them to be too unusual. They’re not all to my taste, so I wouldn’t use them myself, but I don’t think they’re strange. [name_m]Kal[/name_m] is the only one I’d hesitate over, and then only because it feels like a nickname.
